Most people today associate the term "gremlin" with the creatures in this movie, but the term was used in the 20th century, especially during World War 2 to explain malfunctions in aircrafts and machinery. There wasn't any one specific idea of what they looked like. It changed depending on who told it. If I remember correctly, there was a moment in this movie or maybe part 2 when a tv is showing a Bugs Bunny cartoon where he delt with a gremlin.
Yup! The Gremlins' in the movie mess with technology in the movie the same way, with the Stop Lights and the way they tricked the kid into feeding them after midnight.
During WW2 "Gremlins" were famously blamed for most technical issues of equipment, although the truth was that there was so much "production" going on that there were a few steps skipped on the assembly lines in order to meet the demands that were being asked....resulting in some "poor quality" causing the failures. BUT, because it was so well known for "failures in equipment" that when Billy jumps into his car and it STARTS, it is hilarious because the idea of a Gremlin "tampering" with his car actually made it WORK instead of fail. At least for a moment.

Not so for my very young cousin who was a little girl at the time! Back in the 80s, some cousins of mine (brothers) went to see Gremlins at the cinema. Their little sister tagged along and she was really scared of Gizmo. So much so that they were forced to leave the cinema very early on in the movie. And that was before the gremlins even made an appearance.
I'm from Louisiana. It looks like Europeans are very humble and shy. I'm just guessing by the outro. I love that. Gremlins rules! I also love European bands like The 69 Eyes. 'The Helsinki Vampires'.
Howie Mandell was the voice of Gizmo. It makes me wonder, where did Howie get the inspiration for Gizmo's singing. It's a very familiar melody. I feel like it's gotta be like a take of John Williams work in E.T. seeing as how Spielberg helped make this movie. Like they played it for Howie and tried to have Howie vocalize John's orchestra.

Yeah, as much as you guys love Giz & this movie, you both DEFINITELY need to watch 'Gremlins 2: The New Batch' now.. The Mogwai in it all have very different distinct personalities, looking vastly different than they do in this one, the puppetry & animatronics for Gizmo/the Gremlins are 6 years more advanced, & lastly, they all come in SUCH a CRAZY variety of different things with different mutations.. I've been hoping you got to this movie. It's one of my favorites. Comedy horror balance like this is not easy to achieve. Oh Christmas horror movies do exist - the original 70's version of Black Christmas, an early slasher movie that came out the same year as Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silent Night, Deadly Night. Hope you do those movies someday ;) Hope you do Gremlins 2, which you can watch any time, it's not a Christmas movie. Great movie, You should see the sequel much more funny and less dark but not a Christmas movie. Fun fact the actor Billy creep boss who liked Billy girlfriend Kate played with her (The actress) in another movie "Fast time in Richmond High" 2 years before where he was "Skimping" about her if you know what I mean in a very famous memorable scene from the 80s :) . which made the actress a star. :). He also been a great lovable character in the Beverly Hills cop movies which you should see (1 and 2 only). Another fun fact Kizmo was supposed to be Stripe but they decided to keep them separate even the mother was suppose to beheaded. You should watch Its A Wonderful Life the ultimate Christmos movie (Which you see scene of it in this movie). Another great underrated action Christmas movie you should see is Reindeer games 2000 with Ben Affleck. no one react to it yet.

I was 1 year old when these movie was released in cinema and I watched these movie when I was tween like 13 and if they liked these one wait them watched Gremlins 2.
The no feeding after midnight never made any sense...because with the exception of one minute a day, it's always after midnight. Specifying a parameter like between midnight and 6 a.m. would've been better.
I remember being irritated when the film came out. The TV spots made it look like much more of a kids film and downplayed the horror aspects. It was good, but not what I was expecting. Imagine if you were a little kid prone to nightmares! Joe Dante fought to keep the dead father in the chimney story. The studio hated it, but Dante thought it perfectly encapsulated the mood of the film: horror and comedy. Eventually producer Steven Spielberg weighed in, saying that it was Dante's movie, and even though Spielberg didn't like that scene, it should be the director's decision. The studio relented and there it is. Of course the story is impossible. Unless your house is several hundred years old, the chimney flue isn't nearly big enough for a human to fit in it (they tend to be less than 12" wide), let alone packages, so this couldn't ever happen. In the sequel they make fun of this story as well as many other things in the first film (after midnight where? It's always after yesterday's midnight!). The sequel is essential viewing.
I've always thought this movie was more comedy than horror, although, as Magy said, there are definitely horror elements. As I recall, the sequel has more unique Mogwai.

Another fun fact Kizmo was supposed to be Stripe but they decided to keep them separate even the mother was suppose to beheaded. You should watch Its A Wonderful Life the ultimate Christmos movie (Which you see scene of it in this movie). Another great underrated action Christmas movie you should see is Reindeer games 2000 with Ben Affleck. no one react to it yet.

And I really hope you ladies will watch the 2nd movie because I think I love the 2nd movie better then the 1st, but don't get me wrong, I love both films but the 2nd is a bit better, but that's just my opinion. The no feeding after midnight never made any sense...because with the exception of one minute a day, it's always after midnight. Specifying a parameter like between midnight and 6 a.m. would've been better.

I remember being irritated when the film came out. The TV spots made it look like much more of a kids film and downplayed the horror aspects. It was good, but not what I was expecting. Imagine if you were a little kid prone to nightmares! Joe Dante fought to keep the dead father in the chimney story. The studio hated it, but Dante thought it perfectly encapsulated the mood of the film: horror and comedy. Eventually producer Steven Spielberg weighed in, saying that it was Dante's movie, and even though Spielberg didn't like that scene, it should be the director's decision. The studio relented and there it is. Of course the story is impossible. Unless your house is several hundred years old, the chimney flue isn't nearly big enough for a human to fit in it (they tend to be less than 12" wide), let alone packages, so this couldn't ever happen. In the sequel they make fun of this story as well as many other things in the first film (after midnight where? It's always after yesterday's midnight!). The sequel is essential viewing.
I've always thought this movie was more comedy than horror, although, as Magy said, there are definitely horror elements. As I recall, the sequel has more unique Mogwai.

You should search for and buy a *"Gremlins Dancing Gizmo Plushy"* My daughter loved it when she was a kid. I think you can still buy them.. maybe.. lol
