In this tutorial we go over how to key out a subject via green screen in Sony Vegas. If you have any problems, check out our forums at: www.alexallgood...
I used green screen for many years on Sony Vegas, but didn´t really know how amazingly simple it could be, a perfect cut on the image unless when I began using Adobe Premiere. It´s fantastic, and I don´t need to have a perfect green screen, as I needed in Sony Vegas.
Thanks man! I was suffering from the translucent black background that appeared even after applying chroma keyer effect. This video helped me solve that problem :)
Yes, an excellent tutorial. But I have a problem: I am filming a small furry animal and there is a green shimmer around it when I put in the back ground. How do I get rid of this effect? I have noticed some videos that use green screen on RUclips have a similar effect: the edges are green..........
This helped so much! I haven't tried with any green screen footage of my own, but I used images online for practice. My green screen should come tomorrow. I'll let you know if this works 11 years on!
Yep, as long as there is nothing of the same colour in the filming, if it is well lit, if there is no creases in the background it should work, another thing you might wanna know is that if you wear the same colour as the background, it will make that part of your body see through, so you if you wore completely white you could have a floating face, for example.
@TheGamesConsole Think about the editing process I used for this video. Obviously there is no connections from the camera or I would have mentioned it. As far as color goes, you can see me pick green out of the color palette inside the effect. Just by seeing that you should know that you can pick whatever color you want to key out. Watch before you comment.
If you're filming in front of a green screen with the studio lights that come with some of the green screen packs, is the lighting generally always going to be on the cooler side as how you were explaining toward the end?
This is brilliant, if you want to apply green screen to your WHOLE video - but what if the green screen clip is only a part of the video? How do I apply it to the required clip and no other, to stop the greens disappearing from the rest of my video?
I subscribed because I thought your sample at the beginning of the vid was classic...plus I am learning so much from your channel on SV Pro!!! thanks!!
@GeorgeUssssss It's an original score that Alex made. He used music from VideoCopilot's Pro Scores. I have Pro Scores and I have heard all the different parts of the song that he made, which is very well compiled.
+RybelliousGaming Right click the video with the greenscreen, and click video FX. From there, add the Sony Chroma Keyer. That way, it only adds the effect to the video instead of the whole project.
Hi, thanks 4 your tutorials. I want to aske you, I just buy the Movie Studio HD Platinium Sony Vegas version 10 and when I want to errase areas (like tripod and other areas) in green screen, I dont find the plug or key or box for "mask" doesn't apear below "position" ...please Im very frusttrated ... what must I plug to make this "mask" appear??? I hope yu help me best regards Giorgio
Thanks for everything but if you don't have masking and I only have masking generator, can you still fill out the parts that weren't covered by the green screen? btw...I use sony vegas movie studio 11HD production suite
Please help me, I have three days left for a chool project and need to do some green screening, but when I put the picture under the footage like you say, the picture appears under behind the footage, please help i don't have much time left!
Dude... thank you so much. But... I followed this and the effect only takes out the right half of the footage. The other half is unaffected at all! I mean, not half the duration, but half the actual pictures. Please help? :(
Help me. I need to 'extend' the green screen, just like you do at around 5.10. But when I go to event crop/pan, it doesn't say 'mask' at the bottom like yours does, it just says 'Position'.
can i use this green screen technique also with photos? i am planning to do a stop motion animation with green screen and this program. do you think it would work???
Impressive results. But, there's 5001 tutorials on how to chromakey (with yours being 1 of 2 excellent ones). Sony Vegas doesn't support light wrap. Think you can figure out a Sony Vegas light wrap?
Can you technically use any color. I know green is optimal but I'm using yellow. I've keyed out the yellow pretty well and placed an image below it in the timeline but the black is not transparent. I cannot see the image in the black portion of my video. Any ideas??
when i use the chroma keyer it take out all the green in the whole video instead of just the background. I put a video of me infron of my green screen and i drag choma keyer over the green part and it took out all the green, i was wereing a teal shirt and when i tryed to take out the background my shirt went to blue, can you help me asap!thanks
@TheGamesConsole It does not really matter. The green screen will not connect to the computer. As long as you have a lime green bed sheet or a actuall greenscreen.you will need alots of lighting. If you get a regular green screen with lights. you should be good. Make sure you have a camra that connects to your computer and record the greenscreen.
instead of the background you used, i just want a white background, but when i select the solid colour in the media generator, it comes out as grey instead of white, any tips?
Yes, instead of a texture in the lower track you could have had another video stream in there. Everything else all being the same. The green screened / chromakeyed video just overlays on top of whatever you choose to place below it.
Hi there :) thx for the informative video. I'm a newby..lol. I'm doing everything you say but when I move the high and low frquencey sliders and also check the mask box nothing is happening. The shot is of me at my computer with a green screen in the back ground. Compositing mode is set to Source Alpha. Except for the audio that the video file comes with I have no other tracks in the project. Any ideas? Many thx once again :)
Okay, since the dear maker of the video didn't reply, I started searching and I found a solution for the people who only have a black screen without the picture appearing. Right click any of your video images, select the option "Select events to end" and THEN drag the chroma key effect on to your footage. It helped my problem but I work with pictures for my lyrics videos, so I'm not sure if it works with video footage as well.
Hey, I have a problame... I use the green screen like you said, but I can't see the image I put under the green screen... can you pleas help me? (sorry about my Engalish, lol)
I just bought Sony Vegas 11 and watched this video many times and took copious notes...I don't have your "textures" but wanted to put one of my images as the back ground....got my green screen black...no the image is not showing up behind me (the star of the video)...
i want to use an image with a turqois colour, but the green gets sucked out of those parts as well as my yellow and its just a dark blue, any way around this?
Bassotronics It's probably your RAM XP on average only has about 3GB of RAM Max you need to upgrade your operating system XP and Vegas are not very simpatico.
The problem is not that, the problem is that the person who made this video was using Windows XP. And it always lagged when I use Sony Vegas with windows XP and takes a week just to render a 5 minute video.gameboy627
The reason green is used is 1 simple reason, the background can't be the same colour as anything being filmed, so if your using a white background, don't wear any white clothing or have any white objects with you in the filming, the main reason green is used is because most people don't wear completely fluorescent green clothing.
SOMETIMES THE LITTLEST THINGS MAKE A WORLD OF A DIFFERENCE AND THIS IS ONE OF THOSE VIDEOS..KEEP REVEALING THE MAGIC GUYS...
This was AMAZING, thank you! First chroma key tutorial that gave me the results I wanted, with simple, clear directions.

@Sylaza any same colored background but since green and blue are closest from skin color it's easier to use those two colors
do you use Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or just Sony Vegas ?
Thanks for all this

Even though I dragged the image underneath, it's still a black screen... I'm using Vegas Pro 13
RybelliousGaming did you drag it onto the right one? Make sure the other thing is showing underneath.
+RybelliousGaming some problem here
+RybelliousGaming Right click the video with the greenscreen, and click video FX. From there, add the Sony Chroma Keyer. That way, it only adds the effect to the video instead of the whole project.
THANK YOU

When I drag the chroma keyer to the video, that box with all the color settings doesnt show up. How to I activate it? PLEASE ANSWER!
i have a sick green screen idea for a ski edit next year, will post when im done
How do you do the mask when Sony Vegas depending on which version doesn't have that option?
This might be a stupid question, do I need t to record the subject with the green screen behind it before entering Vegas? :>.
Thanks for everything but if you don't have masking and I only have masking generator, can you still fill out the parts that weren't covered by the green screen? btw...I use sony vegas movie studio 11HD production suite
Thank you 2 min into this video and I got the effect I wanted. BIG LIKE

OMG i would love for a tutorial showing how to make the intro to this video... GOD the first 20 seconds are magical!
Help me. I need to 'extend' the green screen, just like you do at around 5.10. But when I go to event crop/pan, it doesn't say 'mask' at the bottom like yours does, it just says 'Position'.
I never even knew Vegas could do this! Thank you. :) I used a white wall as green screen. XD
can i use this green screen technique also with photos? i am planning to do a stop motion animation with green screen and this program. do you think it would work???
is there a water mark when ever you try to use green screen in the trial?
Impressive results.
But, there's 5001 tutorials on how to chromakey (with yours being 1 of 2 excellent ones).
Sony Vegas doesn't support light wrap. Think you can figure out a Sony Vegas light wrap?
So question instead of changing colors and contrast on the subject couldn't we do a blur effect and color adjustment to the background instead?
Can you technically use any color. I know green is optimal but I'm using yellow. I've keyed out the yellow pretty well and placed an image below it in the timeline but the black is not transparent. I cannot see the image in the black portion of my video. Any ideas??

Would it work if I put a video for the background instead of a picture??
i dont understand..I do all ur step but it seem doesnt want to clear out the green screen

cool man... Is there any effect in sony vegas that can get this without green screen?? just to set background white or black....?
instead of the background you used, i just want a white background, but when i select the solid colour in the media generator, it comes out as grey instead of white, any tips?
what does it mean when I've done everything up to 4:16 but I cant see my texture? & how do I fix this? by the way I love this tutorial
Why does my crop tool not have that option ????
@TheGamesConsole udo not need a cable and u dont need a certain kind of green screen as long as its not a yellowish color
did you un check the show mask only when you got it all black cus if you didnt that could be your problem
Yes, instead of a texture in the lower track you could have had another video stream in there. Everything else all being the same. The green screened / chromakeyed video just overlays on top of whatever you choose to place below it.
BEST green screen effect EVER!
Thanks! 5 stars and favorited!

I did it but when I green screened it worked but the background ( a video bacground) is a bit darker than normally in green screen) help?
@braproductions do u need to hav a green background becuz my friend edited a video of someone dancing and did it without a green background
Hey, I have a problame... I use the green screen like you said, but I can't see the image I put under the green screen... can you pleas help me? (sorry about my Engalish, lol)
Everything I wanted was in this video! Thank you!
thank you, you explained this so smoothly. very easy to follow. :}

Cool! Thanx man for giving me something to do this weekend.Great thorough tutorial by the way!
I have the same problem. IF you have found out how to fix it please tell

I just bought Sony Vegas 11 and watched this video many times and took copious notes...I don't have your "textures" but wanted to put one of my images as the back ground....got my green screen black...no the image is not showing up behind me (the star of the video)...
Could you tell me the camera you used ?
when i get to the part where i put the picture on the timeline the picture doesnt become my background. what am i doing wrong?
Only works in the pro versions, unfortunately the "Mask" option is not in mine...
The newest sony movie studio doesnt have the explorer tab? What do I do?
i want to use an image with a turqois colour, but the green gets sucked out of those parts as well as my yellow and its just a dark blue, any way around this?
whats the name of the music in the beginning?
PLEASE HELP
If you are creating a stop motion film how do you apply the green screen and background to all of the images at once?
Wait, it keyed out the color i chose, but when everything else is the original cover its not black and white, but it keys out the green screen
When i try to do this, my mask only turns from green to black, but remains over the background layer.
nice how long did it take you to make tha new intro
I tried this by taping a bunch of green construction paper together on the wall. It worked alright, but there's still specs of green here-and-there...
omg i love you you saved my ass, i was gonna have to buy some really expensive software if i hadn't found this.
How did you even make Sony Vegas work on Windows XP properly?
Everytime I use it on XP, either it causes a problem or takes a year to render a video.
Bassotronics It's probably your RAM XP on average only has about 3GB of RAM Max you need to upgrade your operating system XP and Vegas are not very simpatico.
***** No is the CPU than is in question...
Bassotronics Stop using windows XP problem solved
The problem is not that, the problem is that the person who made this video was using Windows XP. And it always lagged when I use Sony Vegas with windows XP and takes a week just to render a 5 minute video.gameboy627
Savage Nature
Almost the same for me when I render a video in Full HD.
yo does it really have to be green if theres a huge white wall is it ok?
This was a great tutorial. Saved me a ton of time!
Requires some other lightning than what I have, It seems. The light comes in from the left a little too much. Is there some way to bypass that ?
I do understand the concept pretty good, though. It's a great tutorial.
can you like, use another background that is nnot on the list thing?
Wow I learned a lot from this video! Great tutorial!
there are spots around my head :( any ideas??
This works great, unfortunately i had a shadow when i first tried it, but i still have a lot to learn(: It helped. Thaanks!
@tanicc I am having the same problem.. can't seem to find a solution :(
At the moment i want to drag the pure green screen on my clip, vegas is crashing. Do you know why it is doing that?
What camera do you use?
where did you get the insult sound??? can you give a link pless..
If i do the screencreen drag thing a green little square gets left behind...
@SevenFlags123 I am actually using Vegas Pro 9 :)
What is the name of the song at the end of your video?
Awesome... very simple and short. Thanks.
what do i do if my explorer tab doesnt have all the effects
what is my screen isnt green? or i have no blank space behind me?
When I click, "Show masks only", nothing happens. It doesn't go to black and white. Did I miss something?
This helped a lot, thanx
The reason green is used is 1 simple reason, the background can't be the same colour as anything being filmed, so if your using a white background, don't wear any white clothing or have any white objects with you in the filming, the main reason green is used is because most people don't wear completely fluorescent green clothing.
can you do the same but with a video in a background ?
@zailiner how come ''all of them'' how many are they
Great tutorial. Thanks for the help. It got me out of a little pickle at work.
it dosent work for me iv tried it in vegas 11 with an image from my pics but it just satys black :(
somebody tell me the title of the opening music please
Now i know how to cut out some parts around my vid! Thank u soo much man! 5/5
