- Nintendo. Wii. Two words that, at first glance, mean nothing. But combined, they reference a box that plays video games. Today I'm talking about the colors of those boxes.

Funny thing is that the "horizontal Wii" is still backwards compatible, it just doesn´t have the hardware. The connections for the controller ports are on the board, but the connectors itself weren´t soldered in. If you solder them to the board and put in older DVD drive that can lead in GC discs, you are in the game :D
You can also play GC backups with Nintendont and a Classic Controller or GC USB Adapter
IIRC, the RVL-101 variants lacked the ports themselves while the boards were identical between RVL-001 and RVL-101, meaning modifying a 101 to be GC compatible required donor parts; and later versions lacked SMD components as well, mostly resistors.
WOW that's genius can you do it for me. And get me in the game too??? Lol!!!
Yeah, with the PS3 the PS2 games ran separately on its own CPU/GPU. So in their case they could actually just cut those from the system and save a lot in production.
Nintendo can't really do that with the Wii cus spoilers, the GC CPU and Wii CPU are basically the same.
Same with the DSi. The GBA hardware is already integrated on the DS as a co-processor that's regularly used in many of its games. Which makes it necessary to keep even on the DSi/3DS.
If you're gonna put that effort in, just get one of the actual BC Wiis.
i have much love for the wii, i remember my grandma throwing a remote at full force into the wall directly above the tv, producing a massive crater yet leaving the remote functional. anyway that remote is still working i used it a few months ago.
There was definately a reason Nintendo kept bugging people to use the wrist strap.
@@gammaboost Yeah and it was to avoid corporate liability because even though I used that strap, 95% of gamers have an IQ of 80 and boomers especially (often their first ‘home’ council) have a tendency to believe that they need to volt that bitch like a football just to get the sensor to ‘see’ it often losing grip and hurling it at TVs.
Which….in fairness, the Wii put most of the tech in the remote, not the sensor. So I guess it is still Nintendo’s liability. 🤷🏻♀️
I also had an old ass tv for most the time I had a wii, technically it took 1 or 2 of the same mistake myself when I was 12 that I realized the error of my ways, and my ‘big box’ was still a big tank compared to the flat screens that were taking off at the time that are insanely fragile to Wii-Football.
If it sounds like I am jaded, yeah I probably am, but I at least never had to replace a TV when I had my wii. So there is that
Nintendo hardware used to just be built different. We have wiimotes with the whole sensor cover off and the pointer still shows on the tv just fine lol
The Wii-Mini was likely an idea conceptualised to use up leftover parts. Because the WiiU was out and the Wii did so well, they would've had so many components leftover that they could still repurpose for something other than repairs. In theory this makes sense because it would only need to do basic functions and would be very low cost to manufacture and sell.
"The Wii with homebrew makes it a retro gaming powerhouse, I wanted my cousins overseas to get their hands in gaming but of course can't buy them a Switch so got them a Wii with all the legendary classics and made sure they had classic controllers to play those Gamecube games too
" - Emperor Palpatine
and they said palpatine was evil
Palpatine is a gamer confirmed?
Fun fact: by using some clever Bluetooth hacks you can actually get the Wii Mini to run on Wi-Fi and even run Homebrew on it.
Not Wi-Fi. Just ethernet via a LAN Adapter.
Unless, of course, you solder it on.
The PCB even has a unpopulated spot for a SD card and GC port! I forget if the SD card required additional SMD components but the GC port just needed a port soldered to the board and it would work.
The optical drive sadly has a firmware that prevents reading GC discs but it can boot GC games via Nintendont on a USB drive. Probably SD too if you managed to solder one in. :P
Some of the red Wii's are sought after as they came with a copy of the NES Donkey Kong installed that had the custard pie factory level added, something never included on the original NES cart.
And it's the only time (so far) Nintendo has made that version available.
I wonder if you can make repro NES carts with the extracted rom.
@@GoldenGrenadier I think someone's managed to rip the ROM for emulators.
Actually, it was released on the 3DS Virtual Console
Nope! You forget the Virtual Console versions on Wii and 3DS (rip) and Donkey Kong 64
i have a red wii, how do i check to see if i have this ?
Even after I got my Wii U I still couldn’t bring myself to get rid of my original Wii. I just had so much fun playing NSMB and Lego Batman 2 on it.
my nephew still plays Lego star wars on the Wii almost every time he's at my mom's lol
I still keep mine around primarily for the DDR games lmao. Also it lets me put my Gamecube in storage since having it out would be redundant because I don't have a Game Boy Player.
Unpacking moment
i will never get rid of mine

Same here. I've got the 25th anniversary Red edition. It's a keeper, way too many fond memories playing New Super Mario Broski's co-op!

I found my wii last year in a charity shop with the box and a bunch of wiimote accessories and games for like £40 I was truly blessed that day 😩🙏
Wait until you find out that you can just load games onto a USB drive to play them
I found a Wii literally on the side of the road (it was hard rubbish time). I took it home, cleaned it up, Homebrewed it and still have it plugged in.
@@Octobot_77 yooo ok u win that's a great find!
I renember buying 2 used, soft modded wiis for 6 bucks
How times and prices have changed
that’s an absolute steal
@@xPrincess420x only downside was that they where set to the dutch language so that was a fun bit of flaling around in the menus to get that working haha
Man, 6 bucks? They aren't even common where I'm from, and I got a broken one needing new modules since it won't boot, and no one even knows what a tri-wing is.
I always thought the Wii was a great system, had a lot of fun with mine. It then sat in my closets for years until last year when I finally hooked it up again. I put a modchip in it too over a decade ago and so could rent and burn games since I had the right model of CD drive, that could read/rip Wii discs, though that's long gone and I'm no longer poor so I'd just buy the games now anyway.
I soft modded mine and could do the same thing where I put the disc in, install it and then never need the disc again
@@Rancid_Ninja I don't think I could install anything but I had the right model of CD-ROM drive (there were only a few types) that could read and rip a Wii disc. I think it was a Sony drive. Anyway I'd rent a game, rip it, then burn it and return the game and I'd have the game. Still have a few of the burned discs.
Why not just play them on a USB?
My old wii was jailbroken and i could just pop in a USB and play whichever game i wanted on it
@@calebexmortis620 all my games were on a USB HDD
Oh god, playing burnt Wii games is a very quick way to break your disc drive, these days I just have a 500 gigabyte HDD hooked to it with over 200 games.
If I recall, the Wii mini actually just lacks the network drivers that the LAN adapter relies on. You might be able to hack those in via the bluebomb homebrew method
fun fact about Arnold Tsang who did the custom wii ! He did the concept art for APB Reloaded and Overwatch, so if you ever played either of those games you're probably very familiar.
I always thought the Wii was a great system.Mine still works and I'm still playing Wii Sports Resort to this day.
wii sports & resort is probably one of the best games of all time
Lol same
It's worth noting that only the base Wii released in Japan, so the blue one was only available in North America and Europe. All Japanese Wii consoles are the ones with GameCube ports.
5:36 that's a pound sign pro £=pound €=euro (it looks like an E. I mean, even more so than the pound)
Wiis used to be so abundant you couldn’t give them away.
I do appreciate this video, and the Wii. Still have my launch-era one, soft-modded. Looks pretty good with a component cable, bummed that my LG C1 lacks the capability.
get a wii hdmi adapter broski, they're like 5-6 bucks on eBay 😎
@@Ashchu117 exactly this
I wonder if future consoles will follow the PS5's design ideology. There's only one retail basis of the console, excluding the disc and digital variants as I'm only talking about colors, and that's white, with any color 'variation' being achieved via an official accessory, the covers. This more or less removes any limitations to availability, as all available cover colors are widely available, and are not dependent on the console purchase itself. Though, I'll be curious what Sony does when it comes time for the typical 'limited edition' consoles, if the covers will be hyper-limited to just those consoles, or if there'll be an official accessory release, or if Sony will do something absolutely whacky like bundle the covers with the game as an optional bundle. I'll also be curious how this affects the resale market, both personal sales (like eBay) and business sales (like GameStop), as a sale could include original white panels, non-original colored panels, whatever Sony does with limited edition panels, third party panels, or a any combination of these; I wouldn't assume prices would change too much from comparison of the items being sold separately, but strange things have happened before. Plus these panels are extremely good for accessing the internals, any fasteners can be hidden under the panels, it's honestly such a clean setup, and virtually, if not literally, any console design could be adapted to use this design ideology. I would also think this keeps costs down by some amount, as you're only shipping one variant of a large-package console, yet the higher variety of colors are available via small-package accessories, thus warehousing and logistics costs are cut fairly significantly when it comes to potential 'variants' of the console. It's a win-win for everyone, and potentially an even larger win for consumers depending on how 'limited edition' variants are handled. It's similar to the third party decal kits back in the XB360 days, when the XB360 variants were glorified pre-applied decals.
This is only the second video I've watched from this channel, but I love the format and how the fat cat is narrating the videos!! lol
yay more hunks of plastic and electronic magic being rated by their appearance on an arbitrary scale
Are you some kind of homosexual?
I have the red Wii, they might not be worth more but they are definitely more rare, I seem white and black in peoples homes often but I never have seen a red besides mine
I have a red wii also
Same here lol, I always felt so special
Dude same. I thought it was a Christmas varient as i got it back in 2010 Christmas time. Turns out i was very wrong lol
i have a red one as well!
I have one too it’s broken though:(
I still see some Wii minis in some out there stores. They’re so sad to find.
“Nintendos Red October”
Lmfao “one ping, one ping only”
i have a black and a white wii with the game cube ports, just found them the other day in my closet and loaded them up with home brew now they are perfect, can play any title
bro the broke ass wii genuinely caught me off guard and made me laugh so hard. Thank you man
"Almost works" "or Worst offer" "It gets there when it gets there" and -20 dollars. Lmao
In the UK, you can buy a NEW RVL-101 Wii for JUST £20-£30
So when are the Sega Saturn variants coming out? Some of them are really strange, like the Prototype one with Netlink built in. In 1996.
6:53 I'm not the only one that sees AmongUs on those trash bags right? I'm not crazy right?
Cant see anything sussy
actually the family edition wasn’t discontinued in north america until nintendo wi-fi connection shut down in may 2014.
You should do a video on the crazy amount of models of the Philips CD-i. There are just too many of those.
oh boy.. can't wait to see your video on all the sega genesis/mega drive variants... i got an hour or two of my life to spare :P
You either got a wii for Christmas or your parents are still together... Can't have both
I never even heard about the RVL-002 or the Wii Mini.
I like how they made the console hardware worse each release after they got the extra colors out of the way.
I had 3 black Wiis in 2010-2016, with the Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort bundle. 2 had their disc drives fail, and the 3rd is in my cupboard somewhere
Last year I bought a Wii I had one when I was 13 I'm 25 now and I still love that console
I still have my Wii, controllers, no wires though
I had the streamline Wii for the longest time sucked because those can’t play GameCube games. Then my friend sold me his launch Wii for $15 last year. Best $15 I’ve ever spent. 😂
To think that old Queeny said no to a solid gold wii!
5:37 that's pounds
But how will this introduction of rare wii's affect the rare fish market? Will we see another rare fish market crash as we saw with the rise of the rare xbox market 🤔
Ah yes, the black wii. I used to have one, but I had to throw it out sadly.
Why did you have to throw is out? Just curious
More lights equals better.... Preach.
I have the red 25th anniversary wii! Honestly I almost forgot I had it since I haven't used it in ages.
*in Japan they had different color Wii's including green and yellow way way back* 💡
I had only 3 games for Wii because I liked my PS2 and PC more. Those games were Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros and Lego Star Wars.
Holy crap! If this is truly true, you may be the only person with a Wii and without Wii Sports!
Sort of true except replace Lego Star Wars with Wii Sports, which I only played once & add in Cars Race-O-Rama.
Just recently won an eBay auction for a red wii for a really good price, super excited to pick it up again, it’s been ages and the wii was my first ever console..
We need a video showing all different versions of the white wii. Is there any video of that sort?
i really look forward to your quirky vids lol. i understand it takes a bit of time to get the necessary info for quality content but gosh man.. HURRY UP & Keep it up!
The red wii is somewhere in our basement, somewhere along with the old hone theater receiver, a Mac mini, and a bunch of cables
Those mac mini’s are really good computers. You should hook one up to a monitor
You should do psp next! Since psps were really popular at the time and very nostalgic to fans for a video!
I just found an RVL-101 at a goodwill that still has all the gamecube ports and plays gamecube games... ?? I thought they didnt exist which is why i'm here but i definitely have one lol
I like your channel. Thanks
DANG love the strange brew reference!
Surprised he didn’t talk about the last story wii variation
Whats that :o
I have never heard of the wii mini until now
1:03
-$20 means you get paid to take the wii😂
I got a Wii mini after my OG Wii disc drive stopped working and it’s pretty nice. I’ve also since replaced the drive on my old Wii and it works great again
Good bop on the end credits this time. :)
The Wii Mini was our family Wii. Not too bad for what we used it for, which was mostly Just Dance and Super Paper Mario, but now that I’m older and more passionate about video games, I would have really lied to have had a backwards compatible Wii model so I don’t have to go out and buy a classic Wii or a GameCube to play the games I never had a chance to when I was younger. Considering the Wii is pretty much just a GameCube on steroids, I don’t see why Nintendo ended GC support in the first place
I bought a gently used launch model wii for $19 like a week ago online
-*My WEE is rare as well, you want some?*_ 🤣
How could you forget the Glee Wii??
Another episode of one of my favorite series on RUclips :D
I have seen a pink original Wii in a shop that spelled used consoles. What about this model?
The wii mini didn't support composite. I know this because when my Wii broke I had to get the WiiU because I was still using CRTs.
Why did people throw their Wiimotes at the TVs? I never had that issue. Always kept a solid grip, always used the wrist strap. Never had a problem.
Because some people didn't. They didn't put the wrist strap on.
still have my white Wii. it's plugged in rn and I still play it. although I don't have many DVD games for it, I just use homebrew to play N64 and GC games
The Wiis without GameCube support are only good for modding.
The title of this video doesn't really make much sense, most of the video covered Wii models everyone already knows about and certainly aren't rare...
Didnt they find the gold wii recently
Weren’t that the queens?
@@BRAVOROBINSON yeah it was but i dont think it ever actually got to her
I have a Wii holding my bed up
The black Wii is cheaper because it has no gamecube backwards compatibility like the original Wii.
only the newer ones. The first black versions did have GameCube support, my red Wii still has it which was released way after black
My black Wii is backwards compatible
i had no idea the wii mini even existed!
Its a Wii! U get what u sEe! Should have been the official slogan
5:34 that's Pound Sterling. Not Euros. They're dfiferant currancies
My first console was a wii mini which I literally have till this day, great console
What website are the charts from? Like @ 0:54
I had plenty of fun using the wii but basically never played it again once the 360 was released have heaps of games and attachments still for it might have to get it out it’s in perfect condition and I’ve had it since launch
Place your bets, will 360 or PS3 be next?
I just got an original model Wii for $15 at a garage sale. Shits pretty rough... I'm not even sure I want to keep it... but I couldn't resist bringing it home lol
You gotta just go to town on it. Maybe paint the shell, deep clean the board with IPA etc. Did that for a friend who's a big Sonic fan with a really god awful looking one I got for free after cleaning out an apartment for a friend of mine before he moved into it. They left behind a wii, wii u (minus a working gamepad) and a 360. 360 ended up getting modded and reshelled.
If he ever does a video on the Xbox 360 then it will just be 2 hours of this, and it would be beautiful.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES ITS THE WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
I like the Wii, mostly because of mariokart, I really need to get together with some friends an play that sometime.
Is there an emulators for TurboGrafx games and TurboGrafx Cd games?
Great vid
Nintendo should make a new GameBoy with a low res screen etc so people are forced to make good games again and not spend their entire budget on graphics
They did that several times before.
The OG Gameboy had Gameboy Pocket
GBA had Gameboy Micro
DS had DS Lite
3DS had 2DS
Maybe Wii Mini counts? Even though its a pointless console
Switch had Switch Lite
@@tezcanaslan2877 i mean that they create a low powered device such as the PlayDate
@@Roshan_420 low powered variations on consoles tend to be unpopular and may create compatibility issues from what i’ve seen
@@tezcanaslan2877 not a variation, I mean a whole new product which is underpowered and can only do 2D maybe a bit of 3D
You should do one of these for the DS systems
Is this the same guy from alternatehistoryhub
I'm gonna watch this video. Because you know. I feel like it. I guess.
Hey i though the Fat ps3 model was very poor in "special editions" but with the wii it's either that wii or the other wii it's the shame we didn't see more color variations
Like like the like my favorite looking system of all time! Look like a diamond in the rough big old shining bright white enamel looking thing
The Dreamcast had variations?
Interesting I’ve never heard of the wii mini
I had a regular wii, and never used the Internet, or non component cables, or a USB slot, so I guess the wii mini would have been fine lol
I thought there was also a green Wii, but only available in Japan.
So where’s our Rarest Nintendo DS systems at👀
I have white Wii, blue Wii and Wii mini all happily playing GameCube games thanks to softmodding. Wii mini may only have composite but it still a great Wii.
What about the development Wiis?
What? I got a black Wii the month it launched.
