  • This week had a lot of news for Soul Hackers 2 and with the reveal of the day one DLC the discussion of Atlus doing this for all of their major games came up again. So I give my two cents on why I think Atlus is not reason this keeps happening. Along with of course going over what the DLC and different editions is for the game. Let me know what you think in the comments below and if you enjoy the video please consider subscribing.

lol just a little bit after Nyarly dropped his video on the subject. Personally I think it does suck that this content is not in the base game but none of it really detracts from the experience if you don’t buy it so I’m not that worried about it

Saying it's the fault of individual consumers implies the fans have some ability to collectively boycott to punish Atlus, which they frankly don't. I've never bought any Atlus DLC and that choice made exactly zero difference because I represent a minuscule portion of the total market. In fact, the majority of people probably don't buy the DLC, but there are still enough who do to make Atlus some extra profit. Even if people want to complain online, you can't stop the people who want DLC from buying it.

This is true, its not the fans fault but at the same time it is sadly because of the ones that keep buying it makes them keep doing it. Oh well, atlus hopefully will learn one day.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of blaming the fans - it's an industry problem imo. Also convenient to blame the fans but "my reason for buying it is because I have to cover it". It starts at the top - maybe some reviewers could take responsibility, because their input of the first thing their followers see, and is they have the DLC, others will want it. When you point a finger, there's 4 pointing back at you.

The one thing that upsets me is that the collector's edition doesn't include all the DLC. Really sucks that the most expensive version gets none of it I feel like that should be common sense to include it if it's day 1 DLC.

Rarely do collector's editions include DLC, and I think that is a huge issue especially in the case here where there is digital edition exclusive DLC which is the case for many other games as well.

  • @SuperOtakuKyo
    @SuperOtakuKyo 2 года назад +25

I just think it is incredibly flawed to put so much blame on the consumers for this. These DLC are predatory and ridiculous and also very much due to the nature of the game industry where consumers are expected to accept game price increases on top of more DLC and live service models with the intention of having the consumer spend money over time. Atlus has been doing this more and more especially after the Sega acquisition by offering more things as DLC to ridiculous lengths. I just think it is ridiculous to put blame on consumers as if it is possible for literally 100% of the people who buy a game to not spend a single dollar on it as if that is the solution to an industry that is filled with DLC and microtransactions. In my opinion the DLC isn't too bad and the pricing I feel isn't too egregious, but the contents itself is the issue. For example, why is Mara DLC? Literally why? We can tell who the other DLC demons are and some of them make sense due to being rare to be featured in megaten games and I think I can accept Nemissa especially being DLC, but why Mara and really why any of the demons at all except maybe Nemissa? On another note, why is there day one story DLC? We have literally no idea of the scope of this DLC and it makes no sense for it to not be part of the game if it is available day one. A recent example of what I think was good story DLC is the Kaito DLC for Lost Judgment. You got to play as a different character, 7-10 hours of content, and came out a few months after initial release. We have no reason to believe this will offer a huge gameplay change, will be at least 7-8 hours of content and the kicker is it will be available day one. I have never liked Atlus offering booster options for players, it was even more ridiculous in Nocturne HD(a PS2 game at its core being remastered almost 20 years after release with many people revisiting it for the first time in a while, and may want to ignore grind to change up their playthrough, but have to pay to quickly acquire items and macca? Literally nickel and diming players), but it is still crazy here. All of that being said, the biggest issue in my eyes with Soul Hackers 2 unlike most of their previous DLC usage with games is the fact there is exclusive digital DLC and not just exclusive to the digital release, exclusive to the highest tier which is incredibly predatory and scummy. I have never paid for any megaten DLC in my life...until Soul Hackers 2. Its 72 bucks on Fanatical for the premium edition and its basically the cost of the base game and the story arc plus tax. If it wasn't a good deal like that I probably wouldn't have bothered, but years of not spending money hasn't meant a thing and will never mean a thing because the consumers aren't the issue, it is Atlus for offering these things anyway. They should stop offering DLC and use content such as special demons like Nemissa or bonus costumes as selling points for their game to ensure day one preorders and early sales to increase the value of their product. As another comment stated, it is pretty ridiculous as well for you to say all this and blame consumers and use your place as a content creator to justify buying DLC for several games to review. Even if you give it a bad review, it still is making these DLC more well known to people and you still paid for it which is even just a small sign to the company that people may want this DLC.

    • @dr6770

Well he IS right. People complain online and STILL buy into these practices which is why they do it. Not saying it's the right thing to do but if companies have a reason to do something, they will.

    • @SuperOtakuKyo
      @SuperOtakuKyo 2 года назад

He is not right because the companies would do it regardless. Atlus offering DLC like this is not on the fans, it is on the industry as a whole which as perpetuated this practice. It is on them for offering it in the first place especially in predatory ways which manipulates consumers to want to spend money on it. If they didn't offer it, there would be no DLC people would want to spend money on. At the end of the day the companies are doing it to make as much money as possible out of each product they have to offer and it is on them for going about it this way.

  • @plushfire5

I agree and disagree, mostly disagree. I don't think the fault should be pointed out at the fans for buying it, but more to the company for making it. I understand a company has to make the maximum profit possible, but that is the thing to be critisized, that it is like that, when it shouldn't. I have bought the Collector's edition, and it cost me 272 USD to get it to Spain (25 shipping + 47 taxes). Even if I spend 200 USD, it would still have been an unreasonable price, since all you get is the game, some cheap stuff, a nendoroid and a small plush, this should have been 100$ top, but regardless, after spending all that money... there is 0, ZERO, DLC inlcuded?? It's ridiculous. On top of that, there are Digital Premium Exclusive DLC's, so things like the maid outfit is something I cannot obtain unless I spend 90€ buying the whole game and all the DLC's again. Also, stuff like day 1 story arc DLC, is just... just not fair, they're basically selling the game for more than 60$. Regarding SMT, I have only played Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal, and when Royal came out (for which I got the collector's as well btw), I refused to buy any DLC, because it was all so ridiculously overpriced. 60$ for some personas and cosmetics, I didn't want to support that so I entirely skipped it, but here comes the thing, few people have a mindset like that, and most people, if want and can, will buy it. So my point is, Atlus should be the one to blame for making such predatory practices of draining their fans to last cent. Cosmetics are not that big of a deal, those are skippable, but story arcs? After spending 272$ I have to spend like 10$ more to have the whole game and 0 cosmetics?? Just no.

Yes and no that's rough. It all depends if it's like 10$ and the story dlc is reasonably long with 4+ hours of content I don't blame them. It also depends on the company and game. It's tricky. At the end of the day they are developers and game development is not cheap either so if it's a good company I tend to support them more.

Some companies charge your account at the point of dispatch of your order & because these are pre-orders & it's very common for consumers to pre-order & cancel prior to launch, my guess is Atlus will wait until your Collectors Edition has been dispatched, before charging your bank account. This type of info. should be located in the Atlus Terms & Conditions or in a separate payment Q&A, similar to most online websites.

@@sandwhichbag I've never actually used PayPal so I'm not sure as to how it works, however I'd imagine if your PayPal account is being charged on a bank account without money & you later choose to pay with another bank account with money, your order should go through just fine, because your PayPal account is linked to your bank account, so when Atlus charge you for the purchase of the Collectors Edition, the bank account that you switched into (the 1 with money) will be charged.
Usually with orders that haven't been charged yet, websites actually allow you to alter the payment method for this exact reason, so you SHOULD be in the clear I'd imagine, especially if PayPal also said so, however just to be safe, I'd contact Atlus customer support & double check.
Given how limited the Collectors Edition of SH2 is, it's better to just confirm with Atlus that your order is completely fine, just so that it doesn't get cancelled last minute, because that'd be painful to deal with.

Yeah.... I don't know what the point of this video was, but it missed the mark. Blaming people wanting to enjoy a game for the actions of a company that is charging money for costumes, music, and demons and now whole finished story arcs is not something that i think is necessary. If the story was something that would be done after the fact and is something that is new and would be developed after the release of the game i think fewer people would hate on it, but this type of day one DLC is somewhat unique to Atlus and should be called out as such. Why get on the internet to defend a publisher and its bad practices. Blaming people for systemic issues is not the move.

  • @NintendanGX

Let's not shift the blame onto the fans. In my case, I was excited for SMT V, and I'd assumed I'd get my money's worth buying the Premium Edition, since I'm a huge fan of the series. I don't often do this with games, the only other time was with Xenoblade Definitive Edition, which itself had no strings attached. But the fact that SMT V Premium Edition costs almost £100 at full price, and yet it doesn't include Day 1 DLC (Content that's finished and should be in the game already), which itself I had no idea existed until the game finally arrived, is a huge problem in and of itself. The fact that they hadn't learned their lesson the last two or three times was inexcusable. You're right about one thing, fans can't keep letting them get away with this, but Atlus and/or SEGA could also... y'know... NOT do this?
The only DLC I care about is DLC that's started development after the base game is finished. AKA, how all DLC should be in the first place. Sure, throw cosmetics and consumable items on the storefront as Day 1 DLC, and whales can buy them up. Still a stupid thing to do, but comparatively less so. But not entire fucking story chapters, quests and demons.
At least in Xenoblade 3's case, the development on the base game was already completed before they started development on the Expansion Pass, and the remaining month was spent debugging and preparing for launch. Nintendo shouldn't have announced it a month before the game was released, but at least the facts check out.
Going back to Soul Hackers 2 though, I was already reluctant to buy the game, and the Day 1 DLC was the final nail in the coffin. I don't like the direction Megami Tensei at large is heading. Characters don't look like people anymore, they look like what the industry expects of JRPG characters. It's a similar issue that Hayao Miyazaki brought up, where too many modern anime creators write their characters as "anime" characters, instead of ACTUAL characters. They have no life experience to draw from, so they regurgitate cliques and tired archetypes, and give them outlandish designs, both of which removes any and all believability they might've had.
Megami Tensei games had their own identity. SMT 1 had a sinister and bleak atmosphere, following characters in a world that was gradually being torn apart by warfare and demons. While not every game's priorities are exactly the same, the Devil Summoner games felt lived-in, and grounded in reality, despite the supernatural going-ons. And Soul Hackers 1 was heavily influenced by the advancements in technology throughout the 90's, much like Serial Experiments Lain and The Silver Case. It had a cozy 90's cyberpunk atmosphere, and while characters had their quirks, they were still grounded. You could realistically see any of the main cast in someone, somewhere, in the real world at some point in time.
Compare that to Soul Hackers 2. If you removed any footage of demons in the trailer, and showed it to me, I'd just assume it's yet another generic JRPG on the market, with a similarly bland-anime artstyle to appeal to a slightly broader audience. At some point, Atlus stopped flaunting what made these games stand out from so many other JRPG's (good gameplay aside), and opted to compromise on their vision for mass market appeal. It was obvious with Persona 5, but part of me hoped it wouldn't bleed into other games in the Megami Tensei franchise.
So yeah, I'm not playing this game. Not until Atlus reverse their awful business practice. And if I ever do purchase the game, it'll be second-hand, and/or heavily discounted. I'm not willing to pay full price for a game that's missing content and might not even stack up to past games.

I'm confused. So it's fans fault and to an extent I understood your point. But when you talked about the dlc you made it sound like some of it is worth it day one? Like the story arc bonus you said you hope has a lot of cut content. But it's a double edged sword because I would think you wouldn't want that if you say people shouldn't be allowing atlus to put up day 1 dlc right? Like. That's cut content that should be in the game day 1 not in dlc. If it's a big story arc dlc I think most people would've preferred it to just be in the game but now with that thought in mind.. everyone will probably buy it to experience it. Even though according to the first half of this video we shouldn't be doing that. I was wondering if you would expand a bit on that because I'm confused by your point in that regard because while you said you only buy dlc for your podcast, it sounds like you would buy it anyway based on the way you discussed it? Personally, I do think thats worse than the demons pack even. I wouldn't mind if it was dlc later on down the line but day 1 is ridiculous for story dlc. Even the persona 5 royal dlc didn't lock story stuff.

There are some extremely naive views of the game industry out there, but at the end of the day, it always was and always will be about earning money and as it is a hit driven market, earn as much money as possible. Most of the Atlus DLCs are extremely useless and so it is easy to leave them out, I even don't understand the slightest, why people develop any FOMA on that crap. The games are already fine in there actual form of release. Blame yourself, if you are unable to keep your pocket shut on things, you obviousely don't want.

Whilst the fans can be partly blamed for Atlus's recently excessive rise in B.S. "day 1 DLC" practises, the vast majority of the fault comes down to Atlus. These predatory practises are 100% unacceptable, like Atlus is aware of its very passionate & committed fans wanting to support their favourite IP's & companies & simply put, this is Atlus knowingly taking content from the base game & charging an intentional excessive price point, because they know SOME fans will at least buy that content. Atlus doesn't lose money cutting content from the base game & reselling it as "day 1 DLC", however they earn revenue from anyone who purchases said content, because it was originally intended to be released as part of the full game, at least when you consider development budgets of content.
Atlus has handled the pre-launch purchases of Soul Hackers 2 pretty poorly imo. What with the highly, unnecessarily priced Collectors Edition being "extremely limited", alongside them returning back to their garbage "day 1 DLC" practises & this time, it's not just cosmetics, or items anymore, but actual story content that wasn't even created post-launch, like that automatically makes Soul Hackers 2 a $70 game by default & for what, because Atlus knows they can exploit their fans, have done so for years & will knowingly continue. "Day 1 DLC" is never EVER acceptable in the industry, because it's just companies cutting content from the base game & throwing on an additional price tag, because screw it, some poor sod is gonna fall victim to the scam that Atlus are backing & it's not right.
Yes customers are at fault for purchasing this type of content, because they have a choice & CAN decline from purchasing this "DLC", however companies know & are actively exploiting the fact that SOME, not all, but some WILL end up purchasing this content & that's reason enough for Atlus to continue thus shit for almost a decade, because Atlus knows this works & the community simply hasn't banded together & called out Atlus on their horseshit lately.
This isn't a matter of us just simply "voting with our wallet". Atlus need to be told that their community of fans & supporters will glady reject the products they continue to create, unless considerable change is made. This is far from a simple boycott & rather a fundamental change in how we approach dealing with Atlus, not as fans, but as consumers.

Yeah strong disagree on this one. The fault in this lies with Atlus trying a maximize profits by selling dlc that should just be in the game. Even if collectively we don’t like this it doesn’t matter, Atlus is not going to stop this practice. Hell even if everyone came together and no one bought the dlc Atlus is likely to write off the game as a failure because it couldn’t sell dlc. After this they would probably just not make anymore of that game instead of not making dlc.

I don’t mind day 1 dlc, it is often extras that are not needed to fully enjoy the game but is meant for the biggest fans who want something extra that often includes references to earlier games or other content that they will only really enjoy.
I think the argument that you don’t like it and only need it for your content is bad though. I think it is respectable to review the game without that content and say you aren’t including it because you don’t like the practice. Reviewers and Atlus YTers have a huge influence on the audience and omitting that content could show newer players how unnecessary it is.

I understand that SEGA gives you these games for free, but blaming the consumer for this is some dickhead activity.

While I totallly get that I always make sure to point out I buy theses games with my own money if not once sometime multiple times. I make sure never to forget the real value theses have. If I wasn’t reviewing each game and DLC I would never buy theses DLC and most times always tell people to skip on the really lazy/greedy ones to send a message cause only when Atlus stops getting paid for this will they see it isn’t wanted.

Yeah, I’m one of those Atlus puts out a CE, I buy it (at least I try to), they put out DLC and I buy it as well. Except for maybe the 3DS games were I bought some of the DLC and ended up modding my 2nd new 3DS and got all the dlc for free. For this game, I already preordered the CE and will buy the digital premium on PS5. Then I all also buy the premium on PC when it goes on salep

It’s definitely a gaming industry problem with dlc. Like you said any company will continue to see how far they will go make money or save money. Just like the Mario sports games trying to get away with putting in a little effort as possible. The majority of the market is already conditioned to just buy stuff as soon as it’s available. Sometimes that just in good faith to the series or company. Like with I have no problem paying for Fire Emblem or Persona dlc cuz those games give me enough value to pay more. As for me I do vote with my wallet I usually wait till the game is at a value that I believe is acceptable. I don’t have to play games at day one 🤷🏾‍♂️ Maybe I’m the minority here but I usually don’t pay for day one dlc till my 2nd play through. Usually by then I’ll know if I want to give them more money for my experience. I do agree the demon dlc sounds like a bad practice. I believe the dlc persona/ demons in p5 and smtv were a lot more interesting

I usually just buy the exp dlc to lessen the grind. Dlc demons are busted when playing the main story. Kinda sucks that they c*ck blocked us from getting mara.

If i do you dirty, it's not your fault for letting me. Directing anger at fans only benefits Atlus. They don't need defenders.

You definitely are correct. I try to avoid complaining unless it’s like P5R where it’s equal to the game price or same in Q2. That being said I impulsively buy a lot of DLC so I try not to complain about it much

I get where you're coming from with your arguments, but apply it to any other industry and the company would be viewed as incredibly amoral and anti-consumer. Imagine buying a TV but the company charged extra for the remote and individual HDMI ports. There would be justifiable outrage.
Even applying it within other aspects of gaming wouldn't make sense. Is it the consumers fault that loot boxes exist? Should we be held responsible for their predatory practices because we're the ones who buy them? I think we can all agree that isn't the case and there (in my mind) is very little distinction between this and what Atlus is doing. They're preying on fans' want for their product and exploiting it. It's not like you can get this content anywhere else so fans have no choice but to pay if they want a complete experience.

Yeah, you could blame me. I love Atlus games and am a massive fan of the Shin Megami Tensei series and its spinoff. I would buy digital and physical and all DLC. Without customer like me, their won't be Shin Megami Tensei.

I'm leaving this video since the moment he is saying "it's the fault of the buyers" how old are you? 15? To keep blaming people who indeed just wants that?!it's not like you can boycott Atlus by saying "He don't buy DLC", I got the 70$ edition just because of the DLC and Everything that came with it it was just a plus so stop complaining

I have decided to boycott all Atlus DLCs since Royal, SMTV came out with 25$ dlc and and now Soul hacker is 40$ dlc day one I only buy the base game and not a cent more for any dlc. If they reach the point were the story itself gets chopped up and resold as dlc then I'll stop buying Atlus games all together. I never buy a CE or a premium or deluxe edition. Vite with your wallet. While like monster hunter keeps getting updates new monster new story content and tons of weapon and gear all for free not a cent more than the full game price that's a game I support whole heartily

Yeah i don’t buy dlc no matter if its story customization personas or battles that shit is not it and it’s made worse when it’s dlc that can easily be added on the game with the 60$ price

Sorry but just because some people buy it does not make it not their problem. Are you okay with the FOMO tactics and $40 real world microtransactions for a single car in Gran Turismo 7? I'd pray you are not. Stop pay-walling content, it hurts confidence in brand and pushes away the general audience.
