The greatest soprano and tenor in all of operatic history, together again in Donizetti's masterpiece. Unequalled.

I had the privilege of hearing them in the 1975-76 season at the Met. ~ Bellini's I Puritani rehearsals, final dress rehearsal & 1 performance were a memorable experience for a 26 year old. ~ Their voices were in magnificent shape, however Luciano did not hit the high F at the end of the opera as he does in the great 1973 studio recording. ~ At the performance I was sitting in the fourth balcony of a sold-out house, their voices were like being in heaven !!! ~ After those performances, as far as I know, they never sang a complete Bellini or Donizetti opera together at any opera house. ~ Sadly, Decca Records delayed recording them in Bellini's La Sonnambula until January 1980. By then Luciano's high notes and bel canto singing was not what it used to be. Oh well, we must be grateful that the recording is good but not as great as it could have been. ~ I think that the record companies in those days thought that these great voices would last forever ? ! ~ Thank you for posting this Lucia ! 👍

Suth Pav comment: just wanted to add to my first reply; whether the Met opera house was empty for rehearsals or a full house for the 1975-76 performances of Bellini's I Puritani, Joan Sutherland voice was so BEAUTIFULLY HUGE that I frankly couldn't tell from where it was coming. ~ I guess Luciano Pavarotti best summed up when he said on several occasions that Joan Sutherland was the greatest voice of the 20th century !

@@georgesudwoj420 Though not as dramatic as Callas who was supreme at characterisation, Sutherland’s voice in full flow was unique and possibly the most extraordinary in all history. I was fortunate to attend one of these performances recorded here. Those were the days, sure there were some dud productions but the best were in a league far above anything we could see/hear today.

The size of Sutherland's voice in the sextet "Chi mi frena in tal momento?" Glorious high DFlat and even better "T'allontana, sciagurato"....Awesome!

Wow, didn’t know this existed. This was the last time I saw/heard Joan so it’s great to have this recording. My first time was 1965, at the height of her powers, I was admittedly very young but the memory will last forever.

Thanks so much for these highlights. May we have the whole performance please? The sound is rather good for 1973. Sutherland and Pavarotti at their peak I think. I was lucky enough to hear her in her final London run in 1985 with Bergonzi but she did have to make a few compromises by then - the first part of the mad scene was transposed to Dflat. However, the voice was even richer in some respects by then and she sang all the high notes as of old. Bergonzi was pure gold.

I'm unable to share the whole performance (unfortunately) due the rights. Sharing only "parts" the risks are reduced. Just to you know: the director of the Opera Australia, sent me an email to remove all videos with their rights. I tried to find a way to leave then public, but they are inflexible.

Joan and Luciano in wonderful voice, we simply don’t get this excellence in bel canto anymore. Bonynge however is a bit weak compared with Pritchard in the 1961 Decca recording or Serafin in the live recording of 1959.
