  • The Muscle Shoals Sound has influenced music all over the United States and around the world. Journey Proud heads to the Shoals to experience the culture of the recording studio and examine the process by which a song idea becomes a recorded release. By meeting with and talking with the writers, musicians and producers who are the bones of the music industry, we will find out how a sleepy little Alabama town became an artistic powerhouse.

Nice video. I'd be impressed if you'd do a follow-up and key on another legend from Muscle Shoals. That would be Norbert Putnam. He seems to get overlooked for some reason, probably because he saw a great opportunity to go to Nashville and took it. He lives in Florence and I met him at a book signing at the Billy Reid store on Court Street in Florence. We got at a point talking about The Beatles for some reason that eludes me now. He asked it I'd seen the video of The Beatles concert at the gymnasium where Ringo was on a riser (Washington, DC) that rotated to which they would rotate it and face the opposite direction for the next song (they set up in a kind of "the round" before it was a thing). I said as a matter of fact I had being a big Beatles fan who would seek out anything recorded on video I could. He said then you saw me. There was a quasi "orchestra pit" surround on the stage and we (Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section) we paid to fly up and support the opening acts. He said he was squatted in that "orchestra pit" and would occasionally stand up so he was inadvertently filmed watching The Beatles. He said he would have loved to interact more with The Fab Four but they had to fly back for a recording session. Norbert was very successful as co-owner of Nashville's Quadraphonic Studios even recording with Elvis as a bassist both on record and on stage. Also, he was integral in producing the album by Jimmy Buffett that took him from a struggling artist to the top of the music business and set the path that Buffett remained on for the duration of a stellar career. He did a similar thing with Dan Fogelberg. I even learned he produced the only album by The New Riders of the Purple Sage that eventually went platinum which even though I'd heard the record (belatedly got the CD) I never knew he had a hand in, asked personally by Clive Davis at Columbia to help craft. Davis lured him by telling him he believed he could make the loose band cohesive enough to actually make a gold record which would boost Putnam's career and bank account all on the coattails of The Riders association with The Grateful Dead and their rabid fanbase. He did so beyond Davis' already positive hopes and beliefs. Norbert is a real jewel in our Alabama music history. His book is definitely worth a read as would be an interview.

I couldn't agree more! I wanted to hear more music. Pity we didn't hear the guy singing in the studio... after the longgg build up. As it's the 1st I've heard of Muscle shoals, though it would be more music focused like "The Wrecking Crew" Still, very interesting, 'll Google more.
