The problem is that it's very repetitive and the beat is a huge mess. The rap is placed badly and the lyrics is confusing because it's hard to see how the line "the light is coming to give back everything the darkness stole" has to do with some guy ?? And the dude talking in the background is from a debate on gun violence from cnn which again doesn't make sense. It's like they mixed multiple songs together that had nothing to do with one another

Right? Nicki talking about a man, the annoying guy in the back sounding like a mr removed copyright, and Ariana talking about the light taking back the dark ( which is the only good part, but she ruined it with it being repetitive ). It's 3 songs in one, and I ain't feeling it.
Slayiana Windex what do you want her to talk about? Lamps? Shellfish? Walking down the street? Getting down in the club? A detailed account of an actual fucking shooting that happened outside her show? They're going to put everything in relatable/comfortable terms to deal with her stress and anguish. No. Thats Pharrells style. He has alot of different production styles. He has always been like that since he came out years ago. He likes to expirement with different sounds. I listened to a few producers who do that and i think its creative. Dont listen to Ajay. She says shes all in for being diverse and experimental production but all of a sudden, she not vibing with it. I like this song and fuck what she has to say or anyone else's. Pharrell never does "unfinished songs". Never. People are just not hip to his production style. He ALWAYS sounded like thay with this while being different.

Pharrell’s production is VERY evident, he also produced Sangria Wine, that’s why it’s an oddball as well. Pharrell is a good singer, but his production work lately is lackluster.

I don't like this song either. The background sample was too annoying and it was there for the whole song! Being "experimental" doesn't get an artist a pass in criticism just because "they're growing as an artist". Ariana did that with Christmas&Chill and Dangerous Woman and those were amazing. These first two songs though? Not so much. NTLTC is still better that TLIC but both don't even come close to how Dangerous Woman and Be Alright was, quality-wise, and I didn't even like Be Alright when it came out. I really wish Bed was the Ariana's instead of Nicki's.
Also, sales does not equal quality. Just because both songs are charting high and is selling well (thank god for GP) doesn't mean it's also good in quality. Side to Side charted higher and sold more than Into You but we all know which song is better in quality (hint: into you).
I still have hope for Sweetener. Though I'm not as excited as I was before.

I actually really like this song! The beat is so techno and addictive, I just wanna get up and dance. The chorus gets stuck in your head. So. Easily. It’s literally been in my head the whole week. And I actually really like the whole monotone thing the song’s got going on! I think, though the song isn’t about politics, there is definitely political undertones - at least in the video. When you consider the influence of the Manchester attack on Ari this would make sense that she would write more about the world we live in. The monotone style I think could represent how we just act passively, don’t fight back against the ‘darkness’ (you decide for yourself what that darkness is though). And it just makes the song creepier - and I think that whole hypnotic, techno vibe. Is. So. Cool. It’s really interesting to see Ari experiment with new styles and stuff! I really think if people tried to analyse the song and music video more they might (hopefully!) at least see how I might see what I see, something quite brilliant tbh. I could honestly talk about it for hours lolllll

When I first heard the song I didn’t like it but the chorus was in my head ALL DAY so I went back and kept on watching it and kinda fell in love with it. tbh when you look at the like to dislike ratio on the video wayyyy more people like the song so I think all the hate comments are gonna disappear over time hopefully cuz it’s actually kinda damaging. A lot of people are approaching it sensitively and ofc people have the right to share their own opinion but some people have been really rude about the song, calling it ‘trash’ and stuff like that. It’s not true, the song is not awful, people just have different tastes.

I couldn’t agree more. The Light Is Coming isn’t a 100% terrible song, but Ariana is too vocally talented to put a song like this on her album. Her other Nicki collabs have all been pop perfection, but for some reason this one doesn’t strike the same chord for me. No Tears Left To Cry was different than her previous material, but the message behind picking up the pace of the song and great vocals made it a worthy track. I still have high hopes for Sweetener because every one of her albums has 1-2 songs that are subpar, and 10+ that are fantastic.

honestly, I'm not a fan of Pharrell as a producer at all because almost everything he produces sounds messy to me. even Sangria Wine's production could have been much better... kind of annoyed that he produced Sweetener, it makes me not as excited..

I was rooting for sangria wine ! When I heard it , I didn’t like . It usually takes a few listens for a song to grow on me but it never did . It’s not a bop . Something about the beat didn’t latch on to me . The lyrics were disappointing

Look at Azealia Banks - ATM JAM well it has been produced by him and it's shitty but there is a remix out which is a hundred times better! Plus, I'm pretty sure he sells his work for a lot of money so basically for me it's unfair for artists but his productions are so ewwww... They always have creepy repetitive men voices in them + they are way too simple and seem empty or unfinished like wtf...
