great choice...un believable choreography... Laxmi chaya was brilliant with her moves and expressions . Rafi sahab was easily one of the greatest singers in the world..
Hi Matt , yes I’m 77 years old and I first saw this in the late 60’s in a Sheffield cinema. I fell in love with this song too. It was so different to the regular Indian songs. Especially the way it was sung by the Famous maestro Mohd Rafi, away from his usual melodious Indian songs, and the choreography with the dance number. I was really taken back by the lead performance; the guy did a really fantastic job singing in the way he performed. Thanks for bringing back my old memories. Cheers AL
Thanks Mathew for appreciating this song let me tell you my sister Laxmi was untrained dancer yet she was able to dance like professional and she only need one rehearsal of any dance movement and next would be final take. Thanks a lot
The film Gumnaan had four songs sung by the Great Mohammed Rafi. The opening song of the film - this one - is a Rock n Roll classic that was even taken for a Hollywood film 40 years later, along with Heineken for their ad. You will find more than 50 groups trying their hand at rendering 'Jan Pehchan Ho' - which is in itself extraordinary! The next hit song by Mohammed Rafi in this film is the out-and-out comedy song 'Hum Kale Ho To Kya Hua'. It is so difficult to imagine one singer singing songs in these two genres in one film, but wait... the third one is a soft, romantic song, 'Jaane Chaman Shola Badan', while the fourth is a comparatively non-descript pop song, 'Ek Ladki Hai Jisne' Look beyond this single film and one realizes that there simply was NO GENRE in which Mohammed Rafi had not sung a dozen all-time great songs! An entire industry has sprung up after his untimely demise in his early 50s, that makes a living by singing Mohammed Rafi's songs! This is why he is the Greatest to us, this is why he is a University of Music for Indians!
Most powerfull and main aspect of this song is that unparallel unforgotable composition of music, composed by Great Great "SHANKER JAIKISHAN " the film stand only and only for music composition and obviously by SJ.
Watched it today, great job. I suggest another song where Laxmi Chhaya dances, Awara Aai Mere Dil from an old Indian film Raat Aur Din is worth a look.
This was an early viral video. For Americans in particular, the obvious rock / Elvis influence makes it fairly accessible, yet it’s also clearly from an “exotic” other culture as well. The over-the-top singer along with the kooky choreography makes it fun and easy to imitate too. Of course this song proved popular internationally, because once it was posted online anyone could learn it and perform it themselves, which many did.
I waa probably seven years old when I watch this film on the big screen in Malaysia. I recommend that you also review songs and dance numbers by Helen...there're many equally on the same genre of Hindi dance music and songs
Good job yet again, dear Matthew!! 👍 I suggest, you react to another playful song ("Is duniya mein jeena hai toh, sun lo meri baat..") from this very movie (Gumnaam) and enacted by none other than, well,...Helen (who else!!?)😊. Please do this favour to me (and to yourself!)🙏🏽🥰
"Jaan Pehechan Ho" ("Let's Know Each Other") is an Indian rock & roll Bollywood song, sung by Mohammed Rafi, composed by duo Shankar Jaikishan, and with Hindi-Urdu lyrics by Shailendra. It was produced for the 1965 Bollywood film Gumnaam, directed by Raja Nawathe, produced by N.N. Sippy, and starring Manoj Kumar and Nanda. The song has been widely "remediated" in North American circulation. Music video Read more
Above all were the composers Shankar Jaikishan, one of the most successful music composers of India.
Great choice. Thanks. 60s was the zenith of Indian cinema, especially music.

Rafi sahab was easily one of the greatest singers in the world..
It's a given , even audiologists and musicologists have studied Rafi's voice and renditions and the general consensus is Rafi was the greatest singer.
What a classic and memorable song. Sung by the legend of all time Mohd.Rafi. I think this multi-starcast film needs a rewatch on my part.
A very fast paced High pitch melodious club song composed by highly priced popular no 1 music composers shanker jaikishan of bollybóod in sixties

The MV is also reminding me of a high school prom night scene of some movie, where attendees are wearing eye mask. It looks cool 😎

This is a lost scene from a Bollywood Bond movie. Clear as Happy Day; Bollywood's Bond nemesis :-) kerk
