I'm so glad you made this video! I've made two meads so far, first being the Skyrim BlackBerry (failure) and one with Thimbleberries and Strawberries (huge success!) and I wanted to make one this summer with wild blueberries around my camp when they are ready to pick. Will use your tips when making this in a couple weeks!
Something that could be interesting for your meads/wines: dry hopping. Hops can be added to the wine making process at different points which then add different notes to the wine. If you add the hops while boiling the mash, the more of the bittering compounds are added. Alternatively, adding the hops during fermentation (you will have to remove the hops after a few days) imparts more of the fruity oils (usually very little bitters) into the wine while also making it cloudy. In fact, this latter method is often used to make Hazy IPAs. There is a cider brewery near me that actually makes some hopped apple ciders. Some of which are amazing
It's inspiring to see how many different mead styles and techniques you explore. I’m about to make my first mead and would love to know your top 5 favourites, and if you have any tips for a beginner like me? Thanks for all the great content!
I recently made a blueberry mead that came out lovely. I used real blueberries that I blended. I will try pure juice next. I know some will say no but I want to see.
Hey man! big fan thank you for making these videos! I've made a blueberry and strawberry mead so far with your guidance! I will say it's an easy craft to get into and hard to master. can you tell me why some of my first batches have a hard olive taste? just honey mead no additives.
@@TheStraycat74 I’d still filter well water. I don’t trust any water not filtered. May taste fine and not get you sick but it’s not super clean and the levels of things in it no thank you.
@williamo1980 tell me you've never owned a well without telling me you've never owned a well. State Law says we Have to get our well tested every 5 years. I read those reports because it's My Well. Little higher in calcium deposits, but nothing to worry about. I've only had this well for Two Decades. It's not like I know wells or anything. But some random from the internet knows My Well better than I do... so why listen to me, RIGHT? He doesn't even have a well.
I use two tablespoons of lemon juice as acid and nutrients, one thing I learned never use coconut when making mead,I made mead with coconut water and it was awful and I found out that the oils in coconuts don't go well with the fermentation process only afterwards. Anyways love the video thanks for sharing the recipe.
I really liked it! Just last week I started to make my own mead and therefore I could relate with "it gets very messy." XD Since Gallon and Pound is Not very common in Germany an Sidenote with kg would be very helpful. I enjoyed your Video ❤.
I just thought of this. Have you ever added miracle berries to wine? They turn acidic things sweet. So much that chewing on one can make a lemon taste like an orange. I feel that they could make an interesting component to the process
Do you think your recipe will be fine for 5 gallons if multiplied by 5 of ingredients? I just picked up 2 18Liter glass carboys at a garage sale today. Gonna give it a shot this weekend. What a great video!
I love your short videos, but this longer form content is fantastic too. What stirring tool do you use? I’ve been looking for something like that but haven’t had luck as of yet
Do you find it ok to add fruit unsanitised in pre fermentation phase? Risks of wild yeasts? Do you ever add fruit during secondary fermentation? Edit: just saw there are 2 videos about it lol, nevermind
Bought your kit and am brewing my first mead, basing off this video. I used 2 pounds honey 1 pound maple syrup and blueberry juice. Started smelling like alcohol after 2 days. Sadly, after about a week, I started getting the dreaded hydrogen sulfide smell, but I’ve heard this is not abnormal. Does this ever happen to you and do you think it’s reason for concern? Also can’t wait for part 2 I’m brewing this with you!
I'm actually making this exact mead off your extended recipe pdf at the moment, started it last week! I used blueberry juice, but also noticed you called for the addition of blueberries post fermentation. It would be really helpful to know a rough length of time I should keep the blueberries in post fermentation, do you just judge by taste?
I been binge watching your shorts so had to watch some full vids. This may be a dumb question, but I'm a huge fan of coconut flavored drinks and was wondering if it's possible to ferment/make a coconut wine?
What's up! I have a question. How to calculate percentage of wine before making it (I know amounts of: sugar, fruit I wanna use (rhubarb or blueberrie in that case) and yeast).
I use GoFerm to start my yeast before pitching, but keep in mind that Fermaid-O and GoFerm are both basically dead yeast, just different forms (Fermaid-O is autolysated)
I am starting to get into this and wondering how persimmons would do. They taste like fruity honey and i have a ton from my tree. What would ratios be for such squishy fruit?
Any chance you have seen pohutkawa honey from nz most places make it into a session mead put one place makes it with greengage plums to be added with other ingredients to make a sangria
@@goldenhivemead there are a couple companies that deliver fresh frozen. As well as huckleberry preserve not sure if that would work. As well as huckleberry honey 🤔
I made some strawberry wine a few years ago and the recipe i followed said to boil the water and strawberries together, is that not something that needs to happen generally?
How long do I need to keep mead aging? I have my first batch, however i put in the yeast nutrients way later than i should have and it tastes bad and smells a bit bad, I dont know if the batch is a fail or if i can still save it, it is 112 days old, what do I do?
Hey man question. Just started fermenting a mead and added yeast nutrients after 24hrs and now it smells like hydrogen sulfide. Everything was sanitized well. It’s day 3 of fermentation, should I just leave it be or is there something I can do?

You should really try this with wild european blueberries / bilberries. The flavour is more intense and they're quite a bit sweeter.
Did the same thing with strawberries in a mesh back today making cider xD
