Rod was in the last year of his existing contract. He was offered another 3-year contract, but he wanted more money. So, instead of accepting that contract, he decided to play out the final year, with the expectation that he would play really well and increase his value. Had he gotten injured, this decision would have backfired and resulted in getting even less money, or no money if the injury is bad enough.
It's where everyone in the late 90s got that bit. "Help me help you." "You complete me." "You had me at hello." "Show me the money." Even the Joker in Dark Knight made a Jerry Maguire reference.

Highly recommend the director's edition: called either "Almost Famous: The Bootleg Cut" or by Crow's working title "Untitled" (261 min -- 38 min longer than the theatrical cut).
Cameron Crowe started as a very young journalist writing for Rolling Stone magazine. If you watch Almost Famous you'll get his take on his story. He's directed a number of good movies. In answer to George's question about musicians coming up to play at your table in a restaurant: If you are in a Mexican restaurant you have to expect a mariachi band. Years ago I starred in a low budget horror film in Florida. We had a production party at a nice Mexican restaurant. A mariachi band came to our table and started to play the theme to The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. One of my fellow actors and I looked at each other across the table and began to do all of the whistles, all of the hi-yis and all of the hoos-hahs! It was great. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you need to watch that movie.
Todd Louiso (Chad the nanny) plays kind of the same character in the movie High Fidelity. He's just really, really good at playing a socially awkward music nerd. 😀
I lived in Tempe, Az (where the Cardinals played at the time) when this movie was filmed. The last scene during the game is a combo of real plays from a cowboys vs Cardinals Monday game (where the Cowboys crushed them) and scenes with Gooding and Cruise that were filmed in the same Stadium with hundreds of extras as a fake stadium crowd.
Yes George, THAT Clarence Thomas. During his Senate Approval hearings he was accused of sexual harassment by a woman named Anita Hill. A discussion of a pubic hair on a coke can was the focus of a great deal of discussion.
I really love the way the film subverts certain tropes. Most movies would have Jerry be a jerk in the beginning and then have become a better person at the end of the film, but here he has his epiphany about what an asshat he is at the start, only to then immediately regret the mission statement and mostly revert back to his sleazy, selfish self, job-wise. So, he's aware, but he's struggling with actually doing the right thing. The romance plot does a similar thing. It kicks right off with the awkward kiss and groping, then turns full-on sex(y) and they even get married, which is how most romance movies would end. It's so good and, yeah, it feels so authentic. Cameron Crowe is great at that. I'd highly recommend Almost Famous and Say Anything, also by Crowe.
I've watched Jerry Maguire like 3 times really really in depth, like I-wrote-a-college-essay-on-it-in-depth and I never realized how funny it was, I definitely laughed a lot, but this cut just makes almost everything they do a comedy
If you enjoyed Jerry Maguire, then I highly recommend Vanilla Sky. Same writer director Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise team up again. It's also a romance movie movie but more dark and twisted.
The "betting on each other" - Rod is playing out the end of his contract without another contract waiting on him on the belief that after the season is over, he will be a "free agent" and able to sign a new contract with a different team for a better deal than the Cardinals offered him. The risk is that if he ends up seriously injured that affects his ability to play without having signed a new contract - he is unlikely to get a better contract and might not get offered one at all if he is too injured to play well. That's what Jerry was saying - "If you get injured, you get nothing"
"SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!" Fun Fact: The story for this movie was reportedly based on real-life Orange County agent Leigh Steinberg (who makes a cameo in this movie as Troy Aikman's agent, which he was in real life). Steinberg's ex-partner David Dunn tried to lure away many of Steinberg's clients, just as Jay Mohr's Bob Sugar does in this movie. Another Fun Fact: Jonathan Lipnicki showed up on the set one day telling everyone that "the human head weighs eight pounds". Writer, produce and director Cameron Crowe liked it so much he wrote it into the script. Also, Regina King was really pregnant during the filming of this movie.

The look on Zellweger's face, when she realises that Cruise has heard her talking about hm from the hallway, is an absolute picture.
Yeah, Cameron Crowe definitely specialises in rom-coms that guys are happy to sit through. You should really check out "Singles". It is to 90's bands what this movie is to sports, and features cameos from members of "Pearl Jam", "Soundgarden", "Tad", etc.
"That's not a dress. That's an Audrey Hepburn movie." Still one of the best lines ever. To this day, I still think of it when I see a pretty lady in a little black dress. I don't say it! But it reminds me of it. 🙂
I had forgotten Cameron Crowe directed this. For another GREAT movie of his, you should check out "Almost Famous" for which he won his only Academy Award, for best screenplay. It also won the Golden Globe for best picture, musical or comedy, and another for supporting actress for Kate Hudson who had a breakout performance. The movie is based on Crowe's true life story. When he was 16 years old, he was a writer for Rolling Stone magazine and went on tour with bands like Led Zeppelin and the Alman Brothers. The main character in this movies is loosely based on things that happened to him or that he saw and heard about from others he met at that time. It's a great movie, with great performances and an even better soundtrack. I'd put it in my personal top 5 favorite movies.
The Clarence Thomas reference was about the U.S. Supreme Court Justice. In 1991, Anita Hill is a lawyer that testified in front of Congress and accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, her supervisor at the United States Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, of sexual harassment.
Also, there is an extremely strange story about Clarence Thomas in Hunter Thompson’s last book, involving a cocaine dealer, a trailer home in Nevada, and a police raid. They say Hunter committed suicide after that was published, I’m not so sure.
So I hate to sound like one of those Gen-Xers, BUT...this is, in my opinion, one of those films that I find myself saying, "They don't make them like they used to..." It's such a good story. Is it a bit heavy handed at times? Sure. Like many things in the 90s it can go a bit overboard. But this is one of my favorite Tom Cruise films. He's got the energy and charisma to just make you fall in love with him. And that's why Tom Cruises... lol And OMG..Cuba Gooding Jr...he def deserved that oscar. AND I suggest you look up that award show of him receiving it that year. It's priceless lol DEWIT.
The free agent means his contract has expired and he is free to sign with anyone. However no one will sign him if he gets injured. He could heal but it would be risky to sign him.
I'm surprised at how relatively forgotten this movie has become, especially since it's the birthplace of the phrases "Show me the money," "Help me help you," "You complete me," and "You had me at hello."
I enjoyed so much watching you guys enjoy this movie. Nearly everyone I know has seen this movie. It was a such a joy to watch you laugh, groan, shocked, then laugh again at all the same parts as I did the first time I watched this film. Then rehashing scenes just like me and my friends. Thank you so much for this reaction. LOVED IT!!!!!
If I remember correctly, this movie is actually an allegory to how Cameron Crowe was treated when he wanted to make an earlier movie, I think it was Say Anything(not sure) but it was a movie everybody bailed on him over. The movie became a hit/cult classic. This movie is about how he believed in his dream and though those that claim they believe in you will abandon you easily, believe in yourself and do the thing that you love.
The closing to that film is one of my all time favorite lines in films: "In life, I've failed as much as I've succeeded. But I love my wife, I love my life, and I wish you my kind of success".
Yes, it was the same Clarence Thomas. When he was nominated to the Supreme Court, his Senate Hearings were dominated by accusations that he had committed Sexual Harrassment when he worked in the US Justice Department. In the end, he won his confirmation by a very narrow margin, mostly along party lines.
Jonathan Lipnicki appeared in films such as Jerry Maguire (1996), Stuart Little (1999) and its 2002 sequel Stuart Little 2, The Little Vampire (2000), Like Mike (2002).
The strange thing about Cruise movies is that his costars often puts on incredible performances. Like Cuba Gooding Jr in this movie, but also Renee Zellwegger. Like Dustin Hoffman or Jamie Foxx. You'd think that Tom Cruise would eat up all the screen time, but he actually thrives on good performances from his costars.
The "risk" that Rod takes is based on his contract. Usually when a player is about to enter into the final season of their contract with a team, they are allowed to, and often try to, negotiate a new deal with the team for once the current contract expires. It protects them in case they get injured during that final season. Going into the season with no deal means if Rod gets injured, then his current deal expires, he's hurt, and will then probably never sign a new deal. If he signed that shitty deal, sure it sucks, but he'd be guarenteed 1.7 million over the 3 years after this season, even if he's injured. This is the risk. By risking, he's able to get a far better deal eventually, but that was the gamble.
Such a great movie. Terrific cast with Cruise at the height of his charismatic movie star powers. Cameron Crowe really knew how to get the best from him as well as from the rest of his cast resulting in an Oscar for Cuba Gooding Jr.
Please check out Cameron Crowe's ALMOST FAMOUS. It's a semi-autobiographical account of his experience of becoming a rock journalist while still in high school. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and a great coming of age film with some really good music as well
More trivia: At the end when Jerry is waiting for Rod to come out of the locker room, he has a non-verbal sign with the coach that turned him down for a better contract before. Jerry signals he’s going to need more money now that Rod’s a hit. The actor playing the coach is Glenn Fry, cofounder of the Eagles.
Crow (Almost) famously worked for Rolling Stone magazine. So his movies are always peppered with cameos from musicians. The Kinkos worker is Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains.

So, now that they have seen this movie, they will understand the one scene in "Half Baked" if they want to watch that movie for the April 19th upload.
I'm not gonna do what everybody thinks I'm gonna do and just freak out man.
This movie has so many of the iconic Tom Cruise Freakouts™ in it.
One of the few movies that make you more emotional each time you watch it.
I love this film and I loved your reaction. Thank you, it made me relive it in a way like I was watching it for the first time. Great stuff.
And his fiancé at the beginning is a real keeper.
Everybody in this cast was in top form. They were all given good lines and they killed it.
In the Simpsons, Homer is moved by Mel Gibson asking for his help. He hugs him and says "You had me at hello". Mel says "I didn't say hello" 😅
Jonathan Lipnicki appeared in films such as Jerry Maguire (1996), Stuart Little (1999) and its 2002 sequel Stuart Little 2, The Little Vampire (2000), Like Mike (2002).
that kid was the little vampire. i loved that film as a kid
Remember in Ted Lasso when Roy left his studio job and ran to the stadium...
"Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at coach."
Yes, that was Aries Spears.
Saw this on VHS as a teen... awesome movie. Surprised me to the fullest and made me misty eyed.
George, a lot of the "you complete me" speech was referenced in the Ted Lasso Rom-com episode. Roy Kent's line was "You had me at 'Coach'. "
And they also referenced "You complete me" when Ted said "You complete our team."
Great Cameron Crowe films: this, Almost Famous, and Say Anything
The "you had me at hello" bit at the end of the film was lampooned at the end of Team America.
You had me at hello” has been parodied multiple times in many comedies. Best one is from Gravity Falls; “shhh, you had me at ‘shut up old man.’ 😂
This is one of my favorite romcoms and movies in general! Glad to see you two enjoyed it!
So many transcendant catch phrases! I remembered a couple big ones, but there are at least 4 ubiquitous ones.
RIP Kelly Preston (Avery). John Travolta's wife, in case George and Simone didn't know; died way too young. Beautiful and talented woman.
Please check out Cameron Crowe's ALMOST FAMOUS. It's a semi-autobiographical account of his experience of becoming a rock journalist while still in high school. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and a great coming of age film with some really good music as well
Jerry: Do you see this jacket? I don’t need it…because I’m CLOAKED IN FAILURE!!!
Rod: Well boo fu__ing hoo.
So great.
I had a Papa John's heart-shaped pizza commercial before the video and it referenced "You complete me."
Patton Oswalt has a hilarious bit about this movie in his stand up.
He saw it on Christmas day with his brother. 🤣
Don’t know how I missed this post, but I’m glad to find it now, late at night & bored, looking for something to watch. Good timing I suppose!
I just noticed you have not done the greatest Cameron Crowe movie of all the movies - Almost Famous. So good. Magical even.
So now after watching this Cameron Crowe movie, time watch Almost famous also by him.
"you complete me"
"I think i heard that before"
Yeah thats the Joker speech to Batman ;)
Crow (Almost) famously worked for Rolling Stone magazine. So his movies are always peppered with cameos from musicians. The Kinkos worker is Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains.
Should react to 'Magnolia', with Tom Cruise
Am I the only one who likes Vanilla Sky??
@@jannathompson2262they should do both!
@@jannathompson2262 No, you are definitely NOT the only one! It took a bit to grow on me, but I love that damn movie. And it has one of the best soundtracks ever.
@@vermithax It's hard to really understand at first but the more you watch it then the more you like it;) I will see you in another life when we are both cats;) You can thank Nancy Wilson of Heart for the soundtrack...
@@jannathompson2262 For a long time it bothered me that we never knew what it was she was going to tell him in that next life. It hits me differently now. Sometimes things can't easily be put into words, or are simply too painful. Their time had come and gone.
The kids name is Jonathan lipnicki and he's in the Stuart little movies
He's a buff bodybuilder now.
And also in his 30s
It’s funny how this and Mission Impossible came out the same year
Such a great film. Really holds up. And one of Cruise's best performances.
03:34 Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains 😎
That kid, Jonathan Lipnicki, was later in the two Stuart Little films, as well as "Like Mike" years later.
Yes! The brother of Cuba Gooding character was Aries Spears
we had a special pre-release viewing of this movie at my college, and it was awesome, except that we saw the before hitting theaters edit which showed Cuba Gooding's "package"
Renee is great in Cold Mountain. I also personally enjoyed Empire Records.
Ok, seeing as this is a Cameron Crowe film, I’m just gonna throw it out there… If you haven’t seen Cameron Crowe’s best film ‘Say Anything’, that would be a GREAT film to do.
Another great movie by this director is Almost Famous. It's kinda based on the director's early life.
Another great movie by Cameron Crowe is Almost Famous. It's one of my personal top ten favorite films.
Jerry O'Connell who played Cush was Vern in Stand By Me
Sure, make fun of the fat kid.
Funniest "Cut to Sex Scene" Nominee: 'Bad Santa'😁
Two words - Cameron Crowe. He wrote Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and has written/directed Say Anything and Almost Famous and this. Amazing movies all!
Can’t forget Singles! Awesome movie about the grunge scene and is the reason Friends exists.
If you love the sister (Bonnie Hunt) I highly recommend Cheaper By the Dozen or Jumanji.
For a film which features more of the little kid you'd be best checking out 'Stuart Little'. Plus Simone will absolutely adore it!
The kid in later life was an MMA competitor for several years i believe.
