    Nice review Peter. I found running the vacuum bagless works best. The reusable bags reduce suction significantly as soon as MDF dust or drywall (mineral ) dust hits them. Bagless maintains good suction all day. My setup is with a dust deputy on the CT-Mini. This works best with the Kapex as it needs a higher suction to work properly.

    At the moment i´m thinking about buying a festool extractor.
    Because of my will to use the cyclone, i have to make the decision to buy the bigger model ct 26; in my first thought i want to get the "Midi model"...

  • @rlevitta
    @rlevitta 6 лет назад +9

    Peter - as soon as I saw this introduced a couple of months ago, I ordered one for a number of reasons. First, the Festool bags are expensive. This new cyclone, if it performs as expected, will cut the number of bags I use by a factor of up to 50. Second, in looking at the Festool CT extractors, it appears that the only difference between the 26, 36 and 48 is the capacity of the bag. They all run at 137 cfm. Even the hepa filters are the same size. With this cyclone, your capacity is much larger than the increased size of the bags as you go from 26 to 36 and 48 which makes buying the 26 a no brainer if you combine it with the "interceptor." Third, I had considered getting a cyclone before this (I was looking at the Oneida Ultimate - the one you reviewed that fits the CT26) but I kept procrastinating because it voided Festool's warranty. This cyclone obviously doesn't do that - so, for me, even if it wasn't %97.5 effective, I'd still buy it.

      I'm in the states and have festool CT midi and on bigger jobs I bring my Oneida UDD that sits on top. What I do with the fleece filter bags is when they're new I cut the end off and wrap it around a 1/2" dowel that's 12" long and then when it comes time to empty it I just dump the contents and then use a leaf blower to blow out the remaining dust, it works good for me. The thing is with drywall dust and concrete dust is that it still makes its way to the fleece filter bag and clogs it up so I lose almost all the suction, it works good for wood dust though

      @franktkalcevic5342 6 лет назад

      I had the same issue with the price of bags, so I've been using a CV0? (earlier than the CV06) mini system from clearvuecylones. I've had it for many years and still haven't changed the CT bag. It works well in my workshop sucking up plywood, mdf, aluminium and metal shavings, sometimes covered in coolant. It's a bit cumbersome to drag around when working outside, having to move 2 units.

    • @a-carpenter9229
      @a-carpenter9229 6 лет назад

      @@franktkalcevic5342 maybe you could make and adapter out of plywood that would sit on top of your vacuum and then have the clearvue cyclone sit on top, that way you could wheel it outside all in one go

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  Год назад

      Hi Derek, Both do what they are designed for and the choice will depend on your planned usage. The Festool intercepter is not as efficient as the UDD but is very portable and easy to set up. I would not use it in a static workshop but for the mobile warrior it is perfect. The UDD is excellent but cannot be moved easily from job site to job site. I would only recommend it for workshop use unless it can be used whilst still in the back of a van. I do use the UDD in the workshop and the Festool kit when doing really dusty jobs away from base but the need for the latter is reducing all of the time. Good luck. Peter

    Another great video. I would love to see a test done with a CT SYS and the Midi. For me personally one of the great bennifits of a dust seperator is the ability to reduce the bulk and size of the vacuun attached to it as really all it is now doing is providing suction. When shop space is limited this becomes important.

  • @caskwith
    @caskwith 6 лет назад

    Very well done review and I am surprised at how efficient that cyclone is given it's size. It was never going to compete with a "traditional" cyclone but it's pretty darn good.
    I run a dust deputy and I did once think about doing a test like yours but I quickly realised it would be silly. Having thrown away several large bucketfuls of waste, when I looked in my vacuum there was barely a tablespoon of bits that made it through and a slight discolouration of the filter. Impossible really to measure those kinds of numbers. For such a compact unit, the festool is impressive, I love my dust deputy and it's paid for itself many times over, but it is not terribly compact or portable.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  6 лет назад +1

      I think that Festool must have spent a long time trying different designs and each time trying to get it more compact. People may complain about the price but there is no knowing how much time, effort and development money went into making something so neat. Cheers. Peter

    Peter, the video was excellent. I appreciate your practical review of the CT20. Since it is 97.5% efficient for most materials I would generate in my workshop or onsite, it is good enough particularly if I am not replacing the bag as frequently in the CT dust collectors. I am definitely going to try this vac on my CT-SYS system. It would be interesting to see how good it is with the smallest dust collector in the Festool line.

    As per your suggestion to see what others are saying I have just watched a review of the Festool cyclone by the WoodWhisperer. He concurs with your view that it separates well, but he has an issue with the impact on suction, especially with a larger diameter hose. I would be interested in your thoughts on his perspective.
    Thanks in advance,
    Terry.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Hi Terry, Putting a larger hose on the Festool cyclone is not going to improve things much if at all as there is a constriction in the inlet to the cyclone which is at least as small as the inner diameter of a 27 mm hose. I am hoping to borrow a Festool planer soon and am fairly confident that the combination of planer, 27 mm hose and CT with the cyclone will be effective. Peter

    • @eversleyowl
      @eversleyowl 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply Peter. If I understand the WoodWhisperer's video correctly it is not that he thought the large hose would improve things, rather that the drop in suction was most dramatic with it. A drop in suction of over 30% is pretty significant and it was much more with the Festool cyclone than the clearview one he used as a comparison. You may be right that it is down to the narrow pipe as the drop in suction for a narrower hose was less than with the larger one and comparable between the two cyclones tested.
      It woild be good when you test with the planer if you could see what the collection of chips is like with and without the cyclone.
      Thanks again.

    Do you need to use a bag to get a good seal? I have a pile of chips and sawdust out in the woods behind my shop. I wouldn't send the dust and chips to the landfill in a bag, I'd just dump the bin out back and use it without a bag.

      Hi chaps. I too was wondering that. I can see the need for a bag to avoid fine dust getting into my lungs when emptying, but for large planer shavings - I use the HL850 in a cradle as a mini jointer, this would be ideal (even bagless). As an amateur woodworker (hoping to turn pro one day), I get through a pack of bags for the CT26 in a month. This would pay for itself in a year for sure. Granted, there are cheaper options on the market, but in my micro workshop, I'm 'ok' buying into a system that is so considered and compact - even if it does cost me a tidy bit more. I do like this, but can’t justify the purchase. I thought long and hard about spending the extra that I did to get the ct26 over the midi, and real pleased I did but this is a stretch though, and I’m really not surprised Festool are charging a few hundred for it. I rushed to buy the HK85 (which is totally brilliant btw!) and naively thought the grooving unit would be in the box too... of course it’s almost as much again. It’s typical of a premium brand I guess.

    You have to hand it to Festool. They observe the trends and needs of woodworkers and trades people and oblige. This is a good example. As is the auto-start bluetooth vac mod for cordless tools - something I was saying was needed a long time ago. My main problem with the CT20 VA is the whole drop box setup seems a bit clunky in terms of design for Festool. I can't help but think they could have done better. Perhaps the drop box being some sort of slide out cassette or some such so you don't have to dismantle? I see you mention the Oneida UDD below Peter. Why anyone would fork out for that is beyond me. You could replicate that by buying a used sys-4 or 5 for 40 quid and the cyclone unit from China for 4 quid. 50 quid or less total and 20 minutes to put together. Festools design is clearly a step up from that. Anyway, good review Peter.

We find they are a bit to cumbersome due to the height of the complete units when taking them to site. Though I don't think we will replace the workshop units with the FestoolCT20 VA as the Oneida's have been doing great. But getting one for taking to site would be very handy indeed. Peter - which cyclone is the clear one above the garbage can and does the "input" tube (from the side) enter the cone at 90 degrees to the cone or does it enter so that the incoming dust hits the side of the cyclone? It appears to enter at 90 degrees but, maybe that's an illusion based on the camera angle.

    Just saw this at woodcraft here in the states. I have the dust deputy already and it works excellent. I take it to jobs when i know i will be making some serious dust. It is very bulky and black so you cant see through it. I would rather leave it in my shop.
    I really like the clear dropbox and the low profile of the festool unit. Its on my radar. I dont have any huge drywall sanding jobs coming up (i use my rts 400 req and ro90 to sand entire jobs with) but, should one materialize im gonna pick that unit up and put it to the test.
    Anyone considering a festool dust extractor purchase here me out. Ive been trying to kill my 1st ct 26 for 4 years or so now. I sand TONS of drywall mud, wood, old paint removal, woodworking and carpentry dust. Every time i pull a bag out to replace it the hepa filter is untouched by debris (that i can see at least). There is no other vac that i have ever used that can withstand this amount of drywall dust.
    No i am not a festool salesman. Just saying that once you sand with this operation you will NEVER go back to your old ways.
    Good day everyone. Hasnt stopped raining here in weeks and weve got florence heading in to dump more on us. Videos all day.

    Even by Festool standards the price is insane. As an alternative it would probably possible to buy a couple of Tanos cases, design a cyclone that fit inside one of them in Fusion 360 and 3D print it along side some host adaptors...

      Hi Andy, I do not know if you are a professional woodworker or keen amateur.... The time that it would take to save £250 (see Neil Dunlop's comment about FFX price) would be crazy. I doubt that it could be completed in less than 3 days and as a professional you can easily cover that but as an amateur you could do 3 days (say 20 hours) of overtime to cover the cost. And this assumes that whatever you could make would match the Festool performance. If you make one then you will have to make a video about it ! Peter

    Thank you Peter. Very helpful video. I am considering getting the ct sys vac and the cyclone seperator. Would you think the ct sys vac would be adequate enough. I was under the impression the suctions are all similar and it's only the capacity it contains is different. What is your thought a d knowledge on the matter. Your input is ultimately going to help me with my decision.
    Kind regards, Harry (Australia)

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Hi Harry, The CT Sys does not have the same amount of suction as the CTL range and using it with the cyclone reduces it a bit. If you are sanding or using the Domino then this would not be a big deal. If you are using any saw (TS or Kapex) then you need the extra suction that the CTL range can give you. I appreciate that the CT Sys and cyclone look like a good combination but is really does depend on what tools you expect to support. I imagine the CTL 26 would be less than the combination of the CT Sys and cyclone. You can then add your own cyclone. Peter

      Hi Sam, You need to check the price of the Oneida UDD here in the UK - about £310 for some more plastic. There's one thing I don't quite grasp on those reviews. The main job of my vac is to prevent the dust to go to my lungs. The very fine dust in particular.
    So I think we DON'T want for the cyclone to actually achieve a score too close to 100%, because it would mean that even the fine dust is now in the cyclone bag instead of the vac bag, to be released when you open your cyclone and close the bag.
    I want the fine dust to be in the vac bag, which is the only one that will keep it there.
    To know that 97.5% is a good score would mean we know there's only 2.5% of harmful dust in the samples.
    Corollary point: you probably don't want to connect the cyclone when you do fine sanding because you absolutely want the fine dust to be in vac bag, and not in the cyclone bag.

    Given that this isn't really a cyclone, it's actually a thien baffle - I'd like to see how much suction the vac is losing. Thien baffles have good separation, but they lose a lot of suction compared to a real cyclone.

      I completely agree with your comment, we have a dust deputy in our jobs here in the US and just picked up a product called a dustopper which uses a thien baffle design on top of a universal bucket, you would not believe how much suction loss there is at the end of a 16' 36mm hose, you can barely hear the sound of air being pulled through the end of the hose, using the same hose on the dust deputy works great and you can really hear the air whizzing through it. Peter would you be able to do water lift test using this to see how much loss there is?

    • @Subsonic-cd2en
      @Subsonic-cd2en 6 лет назад

      I find it a little odd that you ask that question, given that you've actually done the exact test you'd need on the Oneida version a few years back! Anyway, yes - a similar test to this one ruclips.net/video/ZXFcnJ_LUvk/видео.html that you did on the Oneida would be very much appreciated! I've been trying to decide which version I'm going to get. Your video is the first real look I've gotten at the "cyclone". I understand why Festool made it that way - to save space - but I'd be really curious to know how the suction is. I'm not a contractor, my vac gets used in my shop, so space isn't as much of an issue. Thanks!

    • @Subsonic-cd2en
      @Subsonic-cd2en 6 лет назад

      I'm with you - I'd imagine that Festool would only have used it if they managed to make one that was pretty effective, but it still seems an odd choice. The idea must have been in an effort to make the unit as compact as possible. Who knows though - they've made some pretty clever stuff, and maybe there is more than meets the eye in this case.

    Thanks for the review , I love your Chanel .
    I use my festool CT36E AC HD vac with a saw for cutting out windows and doors here in Ireland in domestic home, as a result it creates a lot of concrete dust .
    My vac is brilliant and collects all the dust, I came across your videos on the festool cyclone and the Oneida cyclone.
    I buy a lot of filters for my vac because after a while the filter gets so clogged and the suction drops ( this is not a flaw , it’s from use and filters are a wearable part any way)
    My question is which is better , the festool cyclone or the Oneida or can you recommend one for me that will work with my festool vac , it needs to be portable .

      Hi Alan, The Festool unit is quite compact and surprisingly efficient. However, it is not quite as good as the Oneida Ultimate Dust Deputy. The reason for this is that the Festool solution is more squat and so cannot quite achieve as much dust separation. If space and ease of transport is important then get the Festool solution. If you are happy to stick the Oneida on top of your CT then get that instead. Both will save you a lot of money on dust bags. The difference in efficiency is small. The size and weight difference is significant if you are in and out of customers' houses. A very nice video and a good advert for your work. Peter
