When i was young I played this 45 record till i wore it out. Incredible vocals. I now 68 years old. This is the first time I've seen what the singers looked like.
And what do you think now that you’ve seen them? I’m 40 and that’s the first time I’ve seen them and grew up hearing it on my dads radio station and of course the lion king lol.
Isn't the internet amazing? Someone was talking to me about Genesis, and I had a moment of profound cognitive dissonance, until I realized: I was a big fan of Genesis in the 90s, before Wikipedia existed, so despite being a big fan I knew nothing about them.
Impossible to not love it! Did y'all know it was originally written in 1939, in the Zulu language? Now the whole world knows it and loves it...thank you, Tokens.
Jay Siegel was in a group named the Linc-Tones in the late 1950s....with Neil Sedaka. An early Tokens line-up included Jay Traynor - the original "Jay" of Jay & The Americans.
I listened to them for the first time in caracas venezuela in 1981. What a thrill to hear them today reminded me of my youth that beautiful to hear them again
that song i heard once when i was young child 1983 as i remember, looks like everything becomes older and bad quality, thumbs up that beautiful song and real sounds soprano
The Tokens were pro-civil rights, as shown here. An all-white male doo-wop group from Brooklyn NY performing a cover of a Zulu folk song in the early 1960's just screams "down with racism" to me.
It was Mariam, but she did not sing the original. that was sung by Solomon Linda And The Evening Birds in 1939. ruclips.net/video/mrrQT4WkbNE/видео.html
If you will go to " The Lion Sleeps tonight Hybrid HQ " way down the list to the same folks, you can see him before he became Fat Face. This was recorded in France, and used to have a kind of Musical Chairs intro, by some French folks. He wasn't a bad looking guy then. Also, if you will notice that when he is strolling around singing, he comes to a guy standing up, playing the guitar, that is half way trying to mouth the high pitched part of the girl, that they don't want to give credit to. Someone cut out the musical chairs part, and spliced this without it.
The lead singer actually has a very lion-ish look about his face! Just look at him and it's not so hard to imagine him with a big golden mane. This is AWESOME - has always been one of our favorite singalongs.
