    450l for the win. Vortex ecu fmf full exhaust, ims pegs, seat concepts super grip seat etc. my mechanic test rode my bike. He fell in love with it. He said, Ktm’s keep his shop open. He’s worked on enough to know to buy the Honda. His words, not mine. 👍

    Went through this phase many years ago. Had a 650. Got more interested in trails. Sold the 650 for a 450. Loved the 450 but missed the 650 on the road. Now I have a 690 and a 500. I enjoy them both for different reasons. Having multiple bikes is the ideal situation.

    I've owned both a 19 crf450l and a 20 500excf. Both good bikes, but the Honda needed much more modifications for singletrack such as a Vortex and a pipe. It's also heavier. On the plus side the Honda vibrates a little less on the road. After owning both for a year I sold the Honda as I overall preferred the KTM.

      it is a tough call between the 2. I think he mentioned the 500ktm but he wanted more comfort more than anything since he probably will be doing a lot more road still. He also has a 2 stroke for single track that he mentioned, so I think the 450L for solo exploring is the way to go for him.

    Great review Will. The 2021 450 CRFRL has fixed the stall issue and no vortex is required and increased the flywheel weight for better low speed torque. I’m seriously looking at the 2021 model and its apparently great on the road. I currently ride a BMW1200GSA, KLR650, Husky 250. Wish Honda would make this in an adventure model with a big tank, heated grips, descent seat and windscreen.

    Your videos have amazing quality!! I agree there is that small "thing" we look for in a dual sport bike. I currently ride the KLX250S and would love to upgrade to the 450L someday. Maybe when there's a used market for them compared to all the "new" pricing. I do the same, I haul my bike to the destination and ride out from there as most bikes aren't comfortable for longer periods of time. The off road use of these bikes are phenomenal. Thank you for so many great reviews

    Hey Will, been following you for a while. Like you I too had a Klx250s but not a fuelie. A couple of years and I felt I could use more power so, pumper carb and BB351 kit. That satisfied me for a few more years but started pinning for a 450l. Took the plunge a few weeks ago and though its stock and not yet fully broken in, loving it so far. Throttle response is pretty abrupt but I am getting used to it. Much more power than the 351 super responsive, fuel mileage is similar as well but tank is tiny so looks like auxiliary tank or aftermarket is in my future. Good luck and keep us posted.

    Very interesting video, you have given the matter a lot of careful thought and as a 3 times 690 owner (now on a 2021) I can sympathise with your view. We all have to make compromises because sadly nobody has actually ever built a unicorn yet (Come on Yamaha forget the overweight T7, where is the WR45R Rally that we all really want?) so we are all forced to sacrifice one aspect for others. Because I don't trailer but travel long distance adventure travel, I stick with the 690 but if I owned a RV I personally would get a 500/501, but I appreciate you need to have something in the middle and have thought very hard about the reasons. My only concern on the 450 is the standard suspension but that can be fixed.

    Getting back to moto after decades of MTB trail and travel and I appreciate the views and info. I'm weird about all the weight because I know I will want to trail ride in my CO home and I can't imagine it being fun on a heavier bike. I'm gonna pay for it and probably go used instead of new, but I'm looking more KTM EXC or 450L than even a 300L. I'm okay with the extra work on something like that and I'm okay with the road limitations. I'm also bigger and want the power and better suspension under me. Glad I'm being patient with it all because once I get it I'm usin it every day I can! (Don't dig snow and ice riding. No sir!) I'm also glad people take the time to make vids because my friends are trying to get me as broken on a 250 two-stroke as I've done on a mountain bike LOL I would want a 701 of 690 if'n I traveled all of North America for a year and was covering ground most of the time

    You sum it up really well. I bought the CRF450L to be my light adventure setup that I carry on my bigger adventure setup, a 4x4 dodge ram 2500 cummins with a minimalist pop-up camper in the back. That motorcycle on the hitch, loaded up with hiking camping gear + the truck as a basecamp is my definition of perfection since I tried it. My only regret buying the CRF450L is that I did not buy it earlier hahaha That motorcycle is a blast, even stock.

    • @azilon007
      @azilon007 3 года назад +2

      It is funny 'cause I had a klr650r before, and it felt too heavy for the single track. Then to balance it I bought a husqvarna TE510. That thing was a freaking beast, but it was uncomfortable as hell on the highway while now the CRF is so well balanced. Performs equally to the Te510 due to its smoother power delivery offroad, but waaaaaay better on the 1 or 2h highway rides here and there.

      100% man! before I was all about traveling from my house which is why I picked the 701 enduro and added a windshield. but now, with a truck camper and a camping out off the camper for 2 or 3 days, I feel like its almost pointless to have the 701. I might as well get something lighter, and honestly 2k mile oil changes is still a lot for mostly offroad usage. I change my 701 every 1k because I mostly hit dirt roads.

    I could have narrated this video myself, with the exact same opinions. I live in vancouver BC, it’s about a 1hr Highway ride to the trailhead of service roads. And some very great, highly technical west coast single track. I also camp with my family and can bring a dual sport for small adventuring right out of the provincial parks. So I own a 450 L, and a Husky 300 Two stroke for the gnar days. I love single track, and didn’t want a dual sport to suffer badly in the woods. And the 700s are just too big. The 500 is the best single slayer but it’s very buzzy and lightly planted on the highways. The 450L has a very, very broad amount of uses. I also love ripping around the city on it. Everybody needs a dual sport! 🤙🏻

    Honda really hit it out of the park with the 450L, I really like the 450x, to me it's the DRZ replacement, with much better tunable suspension, and uncorked it has plenty of power. I hope to see in the future the Honda's going 20k miles before head and valve work. DRZs for my style of riding always good to 12k miles!!!!!

    I have owned my 450L for more than a year and a half now and it has been boringly reliable over 3,000+ miles. I have been stretching my OCI's to 1,000 miles and I have been keeping an eye on things with Blackstone OAR's and everything has been perfect. It came down to the KTM 500/Husky 501and the Honda 450L for myself as well. I ended up with the Honda for a few reasons. 1) It was cheaper and had a far better dealer network in my area 2) I have owned Honda's since my youth and they have always proven to be the most reliable machines and 3) It bridged the gap between being a true plated Enduro like the KTM/Husky/Beta and a full on Dual Sport like the 701. It simply has the best road manners in its class while still being right there with the others in the off-road department.
    I shed quite a bit of weight on mine rather easily and it has all of the power one could ask for with the addition of exhaust and the Vortex ECU. I have ridden mine on some extremely technical single track and while it's no two-stroke 300 it can still get it done and with much less effort and strain than that of the 701. When slabbing it on tarmac it is surprisingly tame and well mannered for its class.
    For the most part, the aftermarket has quickly caught on and there are some really good options out there for it. I've had mine up to 13,000+ ft on the Alpine Loop with no issues and north of 90 mph when there's space to open her up. Don't get me wrong, I have owned my fair share of orange bikes and I prefer them for the tight woods when a smoker is necessary, but I honestly think that the 450L/RL is the best all around bike in its class. Oddly enough, I plan to add a middle weight ADV bike to my stable next year, most likely the Yamaha Tenere 700 or KTM 790/890 so that I can do more rides leaving out from my front door.
    Best of luck with your decision, it's hard to go wrong with your list of options and all of them will put a smile on your face. Hit me up on ADVRider (@tex68w) if you have any questions about the bike.

    Hi, hear what ye saying and agree. The one thing that turned me away from 450L is the manual suggested engine rebuild at 39k km's (if I remember correctly). At that stage, one was unsure if these specs were directly translated from the 450X manual and not updated for 450L.
    What is this for 701? Is one looking at the same hrs/ km's before engine rebuild?
    As you will notice by the profile pic I'm still on the old single. Ready to move to a lighter more modern ride. Most that owned the G650X range move onto 690/ 701. I on other hand would prefer 450, but has become reluctant.

    I have a 2013 KTM 500 EXCF. 8,000 miles now and it has been awesome. It has the power to handle highway travel. 75 MPH all day long with plenty more on the throttle. Weighs 248 which is much lighter than the 450L. Awesome on the single track. Just finished Sand Flats in Moab and it did great. Think about it. It's a great bike. And don't think I'm a KTM loyal person. I also have a Honda Africa Twin.

    If you're going to be hauling the bike to campgrounds and trailheads (which is exactly what I do), I'd say forget the focus on highway comfort and just get the best dirt bike with a plate. The vast majority of your fun will be made or lost in the single track, not on the highway. The slight bump in comfort on the occasional highway stretch from the 450L will not outweigh the increased fun in the single track every time on a 500. The 500 will be just fine on the highway for an hour. Personally, I took it one step further and decided just to avoid highways entirely and went with what I think is the best single track dirt bike that comes from the factory with a plate, the Beta 390 RR-S.

  • @dirtrider0656
    @dirtrider0656 3 года назад +3

    been following you for a while. I know you have a 2 stroke already and it seems you only want to keep that for your single track only days. if you are looking for something with more road comfort than a ktm 500 like you said, then a crf450L is right in the middle. Ive also ridden both and the crf450L is definitely more comfortable but the 500 is a much better single track bike. but based on your need, and if you plan on using this by yourself and comfort is a huge factor for you since you want to hit highways based on what you mentioned, I think maybe a Beta 500 also. its a bit more heavier than the ktm 500. but a crf450L seems to be the perfect mix. hard choice

    Both are for different purposes. 701 enduro have an oil service intervel of roughly 10,000 kms where crf 450 L have roughly 1000 kms - that says it all

      Kelse that is what I pointed, 701 is more road / touring focus than 450 L, and 450 L is for hard enduro - that’s why small oil change kms. If you take 701 to trails or hard enduro may be you need to change oil every 5000 or 6000 kms but not below that for sure like the 450 L. But if ride the 450 on road you need to change oil like in every 2000 kms at least - that is the way it designed - this is what I understood

    I owned a 450L for a little while, I really enjoyed it on the roads/double track, however it had a very twitchy throttle which was fine on the road (you got used to clutching a lot in first gear). On the trail however after an hour of riding it felt like my arms were getting pulled off (I'm not the best rider so I was in first gear a ton). I ended up getting a 350EXCF, it has a much more linear power band and is always predictable on the trail, while maintaining highway worthiness (not 450L with seat concepts seat worthiness, but I can comfortably ride at 70 mph for a while). I do hear good things about the pipe/vortex mod fixing the twitchy throttle though.

Overall the CRF is very similar to the DRZ but the power is definitely better on the CRF and it feels even better off-road. Much more hiway friendly and it retains the off-road ability's that the DRZ excelled at. Also the fuel injection makes for much smoother engine performance overall. IMO the CRF450 is the closest thing to an XR650 evolution that I have ridden. Much better off-road, but it does not loose any on-road abillity. The only thing the CRF is light on is the tractor-factor that the XR's had. Im trying a vortex ECU and maybe loose a tooth on the countershaft. Even so a little clutch resolves it..

    If you can get a really good deal maybe try it. I bet Honda drops it in less than 3 years

    Granted I ride hard, slick trails....but I hated the Honda 450L! Jerky, awkward, and stalled more than 1981 Ford Pinto. Ugh! Hated it. Sold it and bought KTM 500 and love it. Seat concepts seat for comfort dual sporting, and can do trails almost as good as my 300.

      thanks for feedback! ive been hearing the same thing. everything is still sold out in my area, but ive also be debating between beta 500, beta 390, KTM 500. esp in CO where a lot of trails is baby heads and rocky. stability is important.

    If you are just hauling your bike to the trails then just get a 2 stroke and be done with it, way lighter than anything you are talking about and the most fun of all bikes to ride on single track and technical stuff. 701 is for doing the BDR's instead of riding an ADV bike.

    With the announcement of the new Honda 300L, I think you have another viable option to consider. Lightweight, bulletproof motor, enough power for the trails and the small amount of highway you'd be riding. Honda reliability and way better service intervals than the 450. Im considering one for 2021.

    CRF 450l = 25 cv.
    701 = 74 cv.
    only 15 kg difference between the two, why should I choose the crf450 if it has almost the power of the klx 250?
    if you change the mufler they are 5 kg less.

    • @RWWRENTAL
      @RWWRENTAL  3 года назад

      The crf450L has WAY more power than the KLX250 and the crf450L has a bit different power delivery vs the 701 even though the 701 has over 70+ hp the crf450L is similar to a drz400 power

      @@RWWRENTAL Excuse me for my English, I don't know if I was clear, I did not say that it had the same power as a klx 250s, but for sure it is closer with 25cv than the 74 of the 701. I have a 701 and I drove a drz400, they only look alike a bit in the low, mid and high range, the 701 is outrageously superior

      I just went into my local dealer today looking for a last minute pair of gloves or goggles or something. Never in a million years did I expect to see what I saw- three brand new 2021 701 Enduro R's. They just got them Monday. This is what they said when I asked your question, "Same exact bike as 2020."

    If You put same size gas tank to CRF450L, in compare to H701, what will be the new weight of Honda?

    • @TrialsDirtBike

      still less than the 701 because one of my buddies have done this already. even on an empty gas can on the 701 enduro, it still feels heavier on the tighter stuff vs the crf450L but I am not looking to put a bigger gas tank

      @@woitika5983 yep! its definitely weight for me. 701 does great everywhere until I reach really tight single track. I tried the crf450L on tight single track the other day and by far was more comfortable and less tiring. I dont really ride from my house anymore so I just use my truck camper/RV to haul the bike there so I think the crf450L is a perfect fit for me now

    If you don't ride highways or 2 hours just to get to the your site, there isn't a reason to keep the 701.
