A top player in the world reacting to South-east asian play shows how much more our volleyball could improve and how much we could grow in areas such as defensive schemes and discipline
this game means a lot bc it's the philippines first time to be back in seagames mens vball after soooo long. this is a fairly new team and the fact that they defeated former champions is already a feat in itself
This game for the Philippines is phenomenal because Thailand ranks 39th in the whole world while the Philippines just belongs to the 130+ bracket. This was a major upset.
Marck Espejo and Bryan Bagunas are the go-to guys for our national team. Both of them were imports in Japan's V.League. Bagunas is still an import in Japan right now, while Espejo played in Thailand and now, Bahrain.
First time Thailand did not advance into the finals and first time for the Philippines to reach the finals. On home court no less. That’s why this game was so important and historic. And that’s why there was such a big, emotional crowd. We’re just so happy for Philippine volleyball. Come over please!! We need libero camps 🏐 (former Ateneo libero here) thanks for this video. Glad you enjoyed!
This was like Philippines winning the gold medal. Thailand is the powerhouse of volleyball in Southeast Asia and Philippines is not even in the radar of volleyball in The region.
Sooo happy you’ve reviewed this match. This was epic! Still teary eyed watching this. I am a huge fan of team USA, you’re batch in particular. Anyways Thailand has been a monster in Southeast Asia for a long time and Philippines has not been placing for years. This batch was formed with two major players but everyone contributed. This was held in the Philippines and we are a rising volley nation. We have been playing for years and was champions years back but it dimmed a bit in the 80’s and 90’s due to lack of support. This match just showed that Philippines is up to match the best in Asia given the opportunity. Please invite Team USA to Manila, I can link you with people who can help make it happen. Mabuhay from the Philippines! God bless you!
#1 and #15 are actually the go to guys for the Philippines but I think #15 focused more on receiving because he is a better receiver than #1 that's why #1 got more sets in this match. The Philippine team was also established just 8 months before the competition and they had uncontinuous training sessions because of their schedules (some are still in college, some plays outside of the country, some has jobs outside of volleyball) but not bad right? Also, the lefty in team Thailand is a substitute so he deserves a lot of credits for playing that level of volleyball. Lovelots Erik Shoji and Team USA. Goodluck for Tokyo2021.
#15 is Marck Espejo, he was a 5x MVP (yup, rookie to senior year) in his Collegiate career. He played in Japan under Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler, played also in Thailand under Visakha and he's now in Bahrain playing for Bani Jamra. :) #1 is Bryan Baguna, another MVP in his Collegiate career. He is now playing in Japan for Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler. These two players put the men's volleyball into spotlight during their Collegiate and now professional career. :)
Erik, this was an iconic moment for Philippine volleyball! We were the host and we haven't had a medal in such a long time so we were really cheering like crazy and the crowd attendance was massive. Coming in to this game, Thailand was the heavy favorites to win the title but somehow we pulled through despite being down match point in the 4th set of this match and through to the finals. I'd love to see how our team go to the world level but I guess that won't be for YEARS or even decades considering we don't really have a consistent volleyball program and federation 🤐🍵🤣 Hopefully I am wrong because it's such a shame. Volleyball is such a huge sport in the Philippines and the fans here are crazy.
I did not expect this in a million years!!! Thank you so much Erik!! I mean, obviously, the Philippines is nowhere close to y’alls level but to be featured by someone at your level is such an honor!!! I have been following you for a long time now and this just made me feel all the feels.. thank you!!
Yes, Bryan Bagunas (jersey #1) is one of the go-to players of the Philippines. The other one is Mark Espejo (jersey #15). Both of these guys were the ace players from their respective Universities, they are awesome!! So glad that you had this reaction to our event here in Southeast Asia! We would love to see Team USA playing the game here in the Philippines one day!!! See you and God bless you more Erik! Done subscribing too.^^
Proud Filipino here! You're right about the "go-to" guy, but there's two of them actually. The one you've mentioned is Bagunas, the other one is Espejo. They're really famous during their college vball careers and total cannons offensively! They have also been playing overseas as pro players recently. This is a historic game for PH Volleyball Mens Team. Bcoz in Southeast Asia Thailand is a powerhouse country when in comes to Volleyball both Men & Women
Philippines has one of the most appreciative crowds for volleyball or even to any sports in that matter in the world, I mean look at that crowd! We would love to have your team play here. :-)
Just found this. Great reaction! I just subscribed. What made this extra special and sweet was that the Philippines hadn’t gotten a medal in SeaGames in ages and they beat the perennial gold medalist the last so many meets. To think that these are just college age actual college students- most of them at least if not all.
Woah! Thank you for reacting to our men's volleyball team!!! And yes it would be awesome to have US team come over and play. :) And Yes PH crowd is awesome for anything.
Actually Bagunas and Espejo was former players of oita. Oita is a team in Japan that part of V league. They already encounter Yuji Nishida a lot of times.
1 & 15 are the go-to-guys of the PHI men’s team. 1- Bagunas (now playing in Japan V-League, Oita) 15- Espejo (played in Japan V-League, Thailand, and now in Bahrain) 1&15 are arch rivals back in their college days.
Number 1 and 15 are the Go to Guys of the Philippines. Number 1 and 15 were great rivals in college. Number 15 Mark Espejo was once scored 55 points in one of his games in college before graduating. After he graduated in college he played in Japan as an import playing against the best players of Japan like Nishida. After Mark Espejo,Bryan Bagunas (1) also went to Japan to play as an import also after he graduated in college and is still playing in Japan now. Mark Espejo played as an import in Thailand after the SEA GAMES and currently he is playing in Bahrain also as an import. Thailand is the power house in SouthEast Asia and the champions that is why it was a history for the Philippines to dethrone Thailand in a semi final match. That 40-foot back pass of Mark to his college rival Bryan was the life saver of that game.
Thanks Erik for reacting to this 😊 This game was big for PH Volleyball because Thailand was the SEA Games Champion since 2011. PH No 1 Player Bagunas is currently Playing in Japan VLeague as import.
7:59 that #1, Bryan Bagunas and #15 Marck Espejo is their go to guy. They are very popular players here in Philippines and gathered multiple individual awards during college days. Also, both of them became an imports overseas.
Thailand are the defending gold medalist on this event at the same time has the most gold medals if I'm correct, for SEA games that is. While the Philippines hasn't participated in any international volleyball events for more than 2 decades, they were the dark horse of the tourney. Basically its the young underdogs upsetting the dominant champs. #1 and #15 for the Philippines are the go to guys, both decorated collegiate athletes here and are now playing professionally overseas (Japan, Thailand, Bahrain) edit: that's why the crowd is so hyped, it's been a LONGGGGGG time since we participated in international volleyball tournaments.
This win was such a big deal because Thailand was the defending champion and the first time the national team of the Philippines got a chance of a gold medal since the 70s.
And that Thai libero was so chill. How he leisurely and smilingly walked around the court during the game and he's so good. Ice in his veins! I love it.
Well it is very emotional for the philippines because we haven't notch a medal in an international game for a very long time and we just won over the sturdiest team in South East Asia which holds the most medal in our region... And it happened in the philippines. Also, what a great reaction... Though you are correct when it comes to acknowledging the crowd haha we have the most outrageous crowd support in the whole world might it be in any occasion from beauty pageants to sports.. It's pandemonium.... Fun fact...majority of volleyball imports that plays in the Phillipines super Liga and Philippine volleyball league end up living here.... So, don't wish to play here, you might ended up falling in love with the philippines and stay here for good.. Hopefully you can do more review on Asian volleyball Where majority of the players body build is not as big as the western guys but plays really crafty and fast Thanks for the reaction... Can't wait for the next one
Hi! Jersey #1 Bryan Bagunas plays in Japan V.League for Oita Miyoshi while #15 Marck Espejo currently plays in Bahrain Volleyball League for Bani Jamra. Hope you and team USA could go to our country someday, we are also a huge volleyball country. Fan from the Philippines 🇵🇭
The crowd is that wild because the last time our Philippine team went to the finals was in 1977 😊 And Thailand is gunning for 5-peat on this tournament
Thank you Erik Shoji for choosing SEA Games volleyball in your channel. It’s a great exposure for our volleyball teams. Pls. invite Micah Christenson and your team mates in your next videos please. I’m a big fan of Team USA in international volleyball. all the love from the Philippines. 💕
OMG YAS MY FAVORITE LIBERO, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REACTING TO THIS MATCH. WE’RE VERY WELCOMING WITH THE AMERICANS AND I HOPE YOU GUYS CAN PLAY HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES. TWAS A GREAAAT VID IM SCREAMING AAAAAAA!
We have two go to players in Men's National Team. Bryan Bagunas (1) He's currently in Japan playing as an import while Marck Espejo (15) also playing as an import in Bahrain. These two amazing volleyball player were known to be rivals way back in their collegiate years because their teams always face each other in the finals. Good to see them working together in a team. Meanwhile, the setter Retamar (3) played outstanding throughout the game - still very young.. he's teammate with Bagunas in UAAP. Most of the players in this team is from their university - and I can see why Espejo was not too dominant with this game.
its a very important win for the Philippines because they are not expecting to be in the finals. Thailand was the defending champion for 3 consecutive sea games and I guess its the first time the philippines won against thailand and beat the def. champ. and for the crowds? So Bagunas (the guy you were asking) is actually one of the go to. Mark Espejo is the other go to. Both of them are now playing as imports in Japan and the Middle east 😊
As a fellow Filipino i idolize Bryan Bagunas Growing up and to answer your question Mr. Shoji, yes Bryan Bagunas is the Go To guy for the Philippine National Team he is the Star Among Stars in volleyball here in the Philippines
Because you gave time to watch this historic event for us filipinos and you love the filipino crowd..just wait for few days and your followers will boom drastically😁😁..and it will be an honor for filipinos if you, together with entire USA team, will play a friendly match here...will definitely be big one...please please....
FYI...to answer your question..#1 bryan bagunas and #15mark espejo were the go to guys of the philippine team...bagunas is now playing in Japan( for oita miyoshi)..espejo also played in japan for oita miyoshi but now he is currently playing in bahrain volleyball league...please come, visit and play here in the phil...i am a supporter of USA and Italy men's volleyball team...🙂..will be happy to see u guys here
Sino dito ngayon lng naka follow sa kanya dahil sa vnl 2024 manila league 😂.... Im now a fan of yours after I watched you together with your team here in the Philippines...you guys are awesome and so kind to all the fans here...your one of the best team for me... I'm hoping soon i will have a photo with you and your team ... fighting 💪
Hi Erik! Philippines player #1 is Bryan Bagunas, he is also a pro player and is playing his 2nd season in Japan V-League. He was Philippines go to player last 2019 SEA Games with player #15 Espejo.
OMG! My favorite libero reacting to the Philippines vs. Thailand SEA Games 2019! I've been watching your videos and even thru VNL channel when you had a game way back. And when I was in Japan, I watched you playing against Japanese Men's Volleyball. My gosh.. hoping that someday you can come here in the Philippines together with TEAM USA to have a volleyball clinic with young athletes who loves playing volleyball.. Hoping to see you soon in action.. きを つけて
Hi Erik :) You can come to the Philippines and play as import. We also have imports even in Libero positions so you can experience this kind of crowd and warm cheer. Hope to see you play here someday
Hello, Mr. Shoji. Am amazed of your time reacting to this. Am a Filipina having 99% time watching world volleyball matches from FiVB (VNL) and Olympics editions then and of 2016.
Oh please! Come to the Philippines!!! We will really go crazy! I am from down south of the country, but if you will ever play here with Team USA I am so going to wherever in the 7000 + islands of the country the games will have to be played.
Hi Erik! Huge fan from the Philippines (of course)! The go-to guy you were asking about, his name is Bryan Bagunas but he's also called The Bazooka. He is incredibly strong, powerful hand and arm swing and his vertical is out of this world. He is a scoring machine, he can pass too and block as well. On the other hand, the other guy #15, Bryan's diagonal is Marck Espejo who is also a very good outisde. He's actually called the Phenom here because of his outrageous volleyball skills from passing, blocking, hitting. Fun fact: Marck actually got 55 points in one game in one of his college matches. There's been a debate whether or not who is better Bryan or Marck but both have their strengths and weakness, what's important is what they can contribute to the team and how they deliver. During this game, for the most part Marck was "struggling" a bit so Bryan stepped up. It's also good to mention that Marck and Bryan are both currently playing internationally (Bryan is in Japan while Marck is in Bahrain but prior to that Marck played in both Thailand and Japan respectively) Another player worth mentioning is the middle blocker, #6, who did that amazing low set quick is such an amazing blocker. He had a lot of good blocks throughout the match as well as the competition. He's fast and can read the ball well. He hits well too but I would say he's more known for his blocks. The setter for most of the fifth set (as well as for most of the match) is actually pretty young I think around 19 or 20 years old, his name is Joshua Retamar. He's actually in college right now. He was put as the starter because of his skills from setting to blocking as well as some attacking. The setter who did the low quick set is actually a veteran player named Jessie Lopez who is a reliable setter. I really hope this helps!
Thank you so much for reacting to this match. haha! I remember I could barely breathe watching the 5th set. haha! I wish I had seen it live. But I really could feel the energy of the crowd while watching it at home. Awesome! haha!
"Can I play there one day? Can we as team USA go there one day?" Yes pls 😭😭😭 COVID go away~ And your comment on that quick play that like only Brazil can pull off something like that is a HUGE compliment to that setter. Wow. 😍😍😍
I agree with your observation. We have to improve on our serves (serve/block correlation in general) so as to put pressure on the opponent's receivers and limit their attack options.
Both of their Open Spikers are "Go to Guys".. Both have played professionally in the Japan League. The one who ended the match in fact, is currently playing there.
It would be such an honor for us Filipino fans that you can play here in our country and watching one of the best team in the world.

Hi Erik! Philippines player #1 is Bryan Bagunas, he is also a pro player and is playing his 2nd season in Japan V-League. He was Philippines go to player last 2019 SEA Games with player #15 Espejo.
But philipines lose from Indonnesia....thanks
@@widibegok1637 Yes we know. Your point is?
Man this reaction makes you even more attractive in my eyes. Hope you and Team USA can play here in the Philippines.
Im a new subscriber from the Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Volleyball is popular in the ph. i would love to see u play with the USA team. It would be epic!!!
Oh please! Come to the Philippines!!! We will really go crazy! I am from down south of the country, but if you will ever play here with Team USA I am so going to wherever in the 7000 + islands of the country the games will have to be played.
OH MY GOD FINALLY!!! Please watch Espejo’s 55 pts highlight during his collegiate year!!! *philippines outside hitter against thailand*
It's also good to mention that Marck and Bryan are both currently playing internationally (Bryan is in Japan while Marck is in Bahrain but prior to that Marck played in both Thailand and Japan respectively)
Another player worth mentioning is the middle blocker, #6, who did that amazing low set quick is such an amazing blocker.
The Philippines was the underdog there but prevailed. And the crowd was amazing.
my favorite men's volleyball team-USA! taylor sander and eeik shoji are two of my favs...
It will be an honor to have USA play here in the Philippines 💖
Such an honor to recognize our players in volleyball here in our country Philippines...God bless you sir...
All I want is for you to watch Philippines Dawn Macandili. She's our best libero!
@tinimbang ka ngunit sira ang timbangan Walang kwenta?uhmmmm.or taeneo fan ka?HAHAHA
Thank you so much for reacting to this match. haha! I remember I could barely breathe watching the 5th set. haha! I wish I had seen it live. But I really could feel the energy of the crowd while watching it at home. Awesome! haha!
"Can I play there one day? Can we as team USA go there one day?"
Yes pls 😭😭😭 COVID go away~
And your comment on that quick play that like only Brazil can pull off something like that is a HUGE compliment to that setter. Wow. 😍😍😍
Waaaaaaahhhh thank you so much for watching and reacting to this vid. Love youuu.
Yes pls!! Come visit here and plaaay once covid is over. You have a lot of fans here in the Philippines 😁
My heart when I saw this. It’s Erik Shoji. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ love from Philippines
Gotta give Thailand props for that match. Amorntep went full Ushijima mode right there.
