  • “The book neatly covers the development of the treaties, UNEP’s role, and the author’s contribution to the development of treaties, and the implementation and translation of international obligations into national and local regulations. The book lauds the proliferation of these instruments and argues that since UNEP’s inception, international environmental law has become a coherent body of laws. The road to COP 27 is drawing nearer by every minute. This book is a must-read for government delegates who intend to participate in this important conference."- Commentator
The ALN Academy had the honour of attending Amb. Donald Kaniaru's book launch at the UN offices in Nairobi on Tuesday. His book, titled "Environmental Law and Diplomacy," expounds on more than 50 years of environmental legislation. In this book, he shares his experience as a diplomat and a devoted environmentalist, having spent three decades working at UNEP, most recently holding the position of Director in the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (UNEP).
The book traces historical landmarks in environmental law, from the inception of UNEP and the choice to locate its headquarters in Nairobi to the concept of bargaining blocs for negotiating environmental climate change issues. It also discusses the challenges of formulating negotiated state decisions and refers to legislative matters and agreements.
This event was graced by a rich blend of diplomats, representatives from the UN and UN Environment, and law students from the Strathmore Law School led by their dean, Dr Kwinjera, and ALN Kenya lawyers, among other key stakeholders in the legal and environmental sector.
Among the key issues discussed during the launch include the drought currently experienced in the horn of Africa and how environmental diplomacy can respond to the need, the role of government, foreign investors, and private entities in responding to Africa's environmental crisis, and a solution to dealing with the global biodiversity framework, just to name a few.
The ALN Academy continues its efforts towards the promotion of sustainability and climate action for the development and prosperity of Africa.
