Ive got twenty four cuttings in a water bath .three weeks in they starting to show roots. Just took 80 more cuttings and put them in sand . Im so excited .
ThAt will be a great privacy screen, source of future plants, and a home for wildlife, especially birds, who will huddle in those thickly growing evergreen branches during the cold and rain and snow. I've only ever lived in town on smallish lots. I don't care for arborvitae myself. In fact, I've been known to replace some with smaller scale plants for small in town lots we lived on. I enjoyed your video anyway and still see the desirability of these giant areborvitae in many other applications than my own. It was quite thoughtful of you to think of your neighbors and I'm sure they will appreciate you for it.
I enjoy watching your progress on the new land. I'd like to suggest a topic for a future video. It would be extremely helpful if you could do a video on the various types of home nursery business models. For example, I think you mentioned in a previous video that some home nurseries produce plants that are sold strictly as wholesale operations and that they don't have plant/yard sales at their home. I think you may have mentioned that it would be hard to tell that they even ran a business out of their yard! I would love to learn more about the various options that are possible regarding earning an income from producing plants in a backyard nursery. Thanks very much.
Excited to see how your Green Giants do by the end of this year! I planted a few out in our field and they definitely slept the first year. Last year they did creep so, this year I'm hoping they do the leap.🙏
Out of curiosity and not criticism; Why not plant several types of thuja? I realize that green giant will fill in faster but i would think throwing in some other arborvitae that you will need cuttings from would make sense too. And give people a visual idea of what they will look like later
Where would be a good place to get these trees? I am about to so the same. So far, I have not able to local these trees in my local nurseries. Also, how far apart do you plant them, 7 feet or less, am guessing? My wall might require 45-50 plants.
I plan to do the same I don't want my neighbors to think I watch him all the time and I don't want my neighbors to feel that they are watching me all the time.

One of my cedars i planted last year is turning brown, it's half brown from one side. What does it mean? Will it recover or needs to be replaced. Thanks!
Options? Build a physical barrier? Won't work. Way too cost prohibitive. Start with bigger trees? Way too expensive and labor intensive. It's not something that's necessary (privacy), but an endless supply of cuttings is priceless, literally. That matters more than the privacy.
@@savvydirtfarmer I’m going to plant green giants that are 14’ already but the only issue is they will be under some taller bigger trees im wondering would less sun hitting the giants still allowing them to grow? Any advice or tips on this would be greatly appreciated before I spend a few gran on these already large giants lol
We have a house with a new road coming in the next 2-3 years, sounds like a good option for screening. Do you run into any issues with bag worms on these green giants?
I have lost several huge leland cyprus and abrovitae two years ago due to bag worms. If you see any signs of these pest they have to be removed immediately by hand. Do not just dump them on the ground - they must be put in water and the garabage disposed of. Check all the surrounding trees and remove them immediately. They can destroy a 10 x 8 foot tree in no time.
Just be careful planting so many of the same variety. If a pest comes through, it will take them all out. They are great though & you will have a nice screen quickly. ☺️
1 planting from seed is cheaper and easier. 2 seeds adapt to there environment and grew fast. 3 these trees are all cutting so are Genetically the same and any pest will destroy every tree. 4 these require lots of water there tropical trees.
1. These are hybrids; they don't come true from seed. 2. These grow plenty fast... sometimes too fast. 3. Pests? Could happen, for sure. 4. They aren't "tropical." I water as needed.
Thank You for this and all the videos you make. Saying 133 Green Giant Arborvitae will produce a forever source for cuttings is a wild understatement.
More than I can ever use, for sure
“Sometimes plants die because you kill them.” Yep!!
"Sir, my plants died. I only dumped 5 lbs of fertilizer on them. I can't imagine what happened?!"

Just awesome!! What a wonderful screen/wind break! Waiting to see them grow!
You and me both!
Any updates?
Very nice work and I really like the arborvitae
Goats, sheep and prob deer love these trees. My goats have pruned mine to as high as they can reach. Still love the conical tops.
All of the above. We have no sheep or goats and very few deer. SO many landscape plants are candy for wildlife
Thanks to you I am now in Master Gardener school and cutting white arborvitae for my future! Thank you

Thank you for this. My sister and I were just discussing screening this morning. Very relevant.
Glad it was helpful!
More great info! Thanks.

Love it!
Me too!

I will... this is just some of what I have now. Also have a ton of Emerald Green.. would like to get others.
Thanks
Welcome
“Sometimes plants die because you kill them.” 😂 Love this channel!
Facts is facts!
I took my very first cuttings in December how long will it take them to get to 30"?
They will spend the warm months rooting, then they will grow a ton the next year. The next, they should get there.
@@savvydirtfarmer Thank you 👍🏻

Any nursery, garden center, box store, etc should have them. They are common. May have to wait til Spring.
I plan to do the same I don't want my neighbors to think I watch him all the time and I don't want my neighbors to feel that they are watching me all the time.
Yep... kinda goes both ways.
💚💚
I planted my green giant hedge at 1 ft apart. Do you think it will stunt the growth being that close together?
Yes
Off the wall question. Tell me/us about your boots. The look like a rubber muck type boot. Thanks

No way to tell but to give it time and see
Yea I guess you don’t mind waiting a decade till it’s even a privacy screen, what other options are there?

Any update on this privacy fence
how close can you plant against the fence? looks close.
These are about 5' away. Too close, but I will keep them trimmed back.
Just be careful planting so many of the same variety. If a pest comes through, it will take them all out. They are great though & you will have a nice screen quickly. ☺️
That could certainly happen; no doubt.
Use giberellic acid made mine sooo much healthier and vigerous
I would be concerned about Momo Culture if a pest or disease comes around.
You could lose all of them.😥
Always a possibility
