The mandolin improv class I'm taking included a similar get-to-know-the-fretboard approach playing major triads starting from the root note but across the strings. It also goes counterclockwise around the circle of fifths. That was followed up with playing the triads starting from the third while visualizing where the root note is, and then playing the triads starting from the fifth while still visualizing where the root note is. Again going counter clockwise around the circle of fifths. As a bonus, it made me learn intervals all over the fretboard. That approach works and I have no doubt yours does too. Cool challenge. I hope you get a lot of takers.
Ah very cool! Yes it sounds quite similar. There are so many exercises of this nature to do, and it's great to learn the intervals all over the fretboard because it's very helpful to know! Thanks for the nice comment :)
I was checking out some of Gracie's music theory videos for piano, and found this gem! I've been wanting to memorize my uku fretboard and felt intimidated and frustrated by trying to do it on my own.. this is a godsend! I'm getting going today, November 3 :)

Oh my gosh! I am so excited. I found you Gracie looking for how to read music & love how simple & clear you make it...then to my great surprise I find out you play ukulele!! This is the first time I found a lesson learning the fret board that looks like it will work..so, so excited!!

I am up for the fret board challenge. I am 56 and have been playing guitar for about 42 years , but - to my chagrin - I have never actually tried to internalize the fretboard in this way. I am excited to try this - for me - new approach. 3 days in: Bb. WITH THE METRONOME. so far so good.

Yay good luck!!!! Remember to do it once a day just for a few minutes. There is no need to go through the challenge quickly. It’s okay if you just do the first 3 days for 2 weeks, haha. The important thing is that you are consistent about practicing it every day and that you only move on to the next “day” once you are truly ready. The beauty of doing it this way is that you don’t have to spend more than a few minutes each day doing it!

For guitar, I came up with this plan to cover all the notes. For E, use either string high or low.

Started several days ago and can get up to Eb with metronome. Difficult, but probably worth it! Thanks for the challenge.
That’s great! And it’s totally fine to practice just up to Eb every day for a week or two and then move on to the next step when you’re ready! :)

Day three, and I am having a ball. I am cheating a little, and doing some inversions on some strings. You really opened up a new world for me, merci beaucoup.
Thank you for this great challenge. I will start 4-15-23 (after my houseguests leave). I'm playing banjo and can provide the banjo scheme for G tuning once I've gone through all 12 days (which could take many months!). After that maybe I'll work on double C tuning (since we oldtime banjo players use different tunings), but that could be years away :) .

I'm disappointed by my own ineptitude.
I have seen many of your other videos, and they, like you, have been brilliant.
Trouble is I have a guitar not a ukulele, and have no clue how to transpose this usefully to the guitar.

I don’t participate as a patreon for any RUclips channel. I have however purchased specific exercises from RUclips channels. If your guitar exercise was available separately, I would most likely have bought it depending on the cost. You might want to consider having your exercises available as a one time purchase.
To stay consistent with previous lessons, I count the major third as 4 half-steps and minor third as 3 half steps, rather than thinking of spanning 5 and 4 frets, respectively. Cheers.
This is pretty interesting. I'm going to do the challenge. I could use some motivation for practicing with a metronome .

Thank You...I think you are a very good teacher. You've taught me without confusion. For which I am grateful. This is a good exercise. Guitar is my instrument of choice. I took lessens as a youngster (14yrs) and was made to learn scales the same way sans the circle of 5ths which I wasn't introduced to until much later (18 or 19). I recently picked up the uke to help (& play) my Grandchildren learn as this was their instrument of choice. I found I enjoyed the uke but it took time for my brain to retrain chord patterns. I will exercise myself using this method as I learn my way around the uke. I like the instrument you used in this vid. I have become alittle obsessed with buying ukes and now own 5 of various sizes, styles and quality. The one you are playing sounds and looks like an instrument of quality would you mind sharing what it is...it sounds nice. Thank you

Madam the total 9 major chord notes cover the total choramatic notes that you can play anywhere on the fretboard on any string is it ok?

This is is great, thank you for doing it! Challenge accepted. I really appreciate how you incorporate the major triads (and circle of fifths), it helps contextualize and not just memorize. Couple of questions. what is the theory/thought behind adding the octave (for four notes) vs. three notes, and use more strings for each trad? Also, why go counterclockwise vs. clockwise? Maybe i will know the answers myself after I complete this...:-)
Woohoo! Good luck and let me know how it goes! You can totally go clockwise or counterclockwise! I just picked one because it had to be something, but either direction is great to practice. Ideally, you practice in going both directions :). I add the octave because I like hearing it in the arpeggio and practicing the distance of that perfect fourth interval (between the 5th and the octave).
Dear Gracie, what a super way to learn the fretboard...I can feel my progress from one day to the next; I have never felt so solid when looking for a note... Now, the million dollar question: I have just started playing the baritone ukelele....do you have a similar tutorial? Thank you Gracie! I have been frustrated at not finding an in-depth enough ukulele book that I can really get the hang of playing and reading music... Well, I'm going to do this starting today. I can't imagine pulling it off in 12 days, but I will definitely complete the challenge!
Woohoo!!! Good luck!!! Hahaha you should not try to do it in 12 days! It's good to keep repeating days as many times as you need before moving on :). I don't think ANYBODY really does it in 12 days!

Hi Gracie, just recently ‘discovered’ your lessons. Extremely helpful, well presented. Just wondering if you teach anything specific to mandolins. Of course all the chord and fifth circle and triad theory relates to all instruments, but sometimes find it difficult to play the diatonic chords in ‘sequence’ (1-3-5) on the mandolin. Any thoughts? Thank you.
Much of this is over my head as I’m not real far along in guitar playing. Not sure how the triad part works with Circle of 4ths and 5ths. Or why learning triads like this is important.
But I did get something from this, i.e. distance between frets and major, minor and perfect.

There is a method to the madness!! :) Haha I agree with Greg that you should check out the music theory playlist, and then it might make a little more sense. If you're still confused, let me know! We are just going in order of the circle of 4ths and 5ths. So starting with C.. then we move counter clockwise around the circle and get to F... then Bb... then Eb... etc :) It's just good to reinforce the order of these notes, and we have to do it in some kind of order! That's why we do it :)

It took me a couple of days before I saw the intervals under the fingerings. Are there any other strategies instead of doing all the chords cummulatively each day?

Thanks! Curious how I'd adapt this for the bass... I don't see how you're picking which notes on which strings to do, for each day. Once I understand, I'd be glad to put together a PDF for bass and send it to you if you'd like. I downloaded the Guitar one, should I just follow the Low E, A, D, and G strings and ignore B and High E strings?
Ah yes, if you just look at he guitar one and ignore the B and high E strings then it will work perfectly for bass! Let me try to explain the process of how I picked which notes on which strings to play...
We are playing the notes in major triads in root position on one string at a time. I'm starting with C major triad (which has the notes C-E-G in root position). First, I will start with the G string. I look at the string and play every single note in the C major chord from lowest to highest on that string. So, anytime there is the note C, E, or G on that G string I will play it. Well the lowest note I can play on that string is a G, which is part of the chord. Therefore that would be the first note I play. HOWEVER since G is the lowest note, it will no longer be a C major triad in root position... if G is the lowest note, it becomes a C major triad 2nd inversion. Therefore I will skip over the G string (for this exercise - since I am only doing root position... it's good to do first inversion and 2nd inversions later, haha). Then I look at the next string, my C string. Okay, the lowest note on that string is a C... and hey that's part of C major triad. AND it's the root note.. so on this string if I play all the notes in C major chord from lowest to highest along the string it is in root position because C is the lowest note! Therefore I told you guys to play it on the C string. What about E string? Ah, no that one won't be in root position because E is the lowest note on that string and that would make it C major in 1st inversion. So I will skip over the E string. What about A string? The lowest note in a C major chord on that string happens to be C (on the 3rd fret), therefore this string lets me play it in root position.
THEN I move counterclockwise around the circle of 4ths/5ths. So after C, I move onto F major. Then Bb major.. etc.
Haha... does it make sense? I hope so.... I will probably make a video later where we do the same exercises but for 1st inversion and 2nd inversion. I just think it's good to do them one at a time because it's good to really solidify in your ears and fingers the way each inversion sounds and feels.

@@GracieTerzian Finished! Used this new knowledge when I was working on memorizing the pentatonic scales up the neck... made myself stop and identify each note as I played it. Also used it when doing chords with the root on the various notes of the 'E' string, again, making myself identify the notes, not just play the shape. Thanks!

Would you possibly find time to do a video breaking the minor (ScaleS) down little more in debt , as usually explained once you know the Major scale the minor scale isn't much , but I find it oposite.. a lot more hard to absorb and memorize , meaning Major scale is W-W-H-WWW-H and Lydian and Mixlydian just change one note or step in each mode or scale,, BUT the minor scale seams much more multifaceted with Dorian the 2nd mode not being the minor scale you are speaking about on videos on circle of 5ths that I assume being the AEOLIAN MODE or Natural minor having 3(b) flats and what about phyrgian the 3rd position having minor 2nd minor 3rd to make it minor but 6 and 7 are minor,, AND NOW TRYING TO LEARN WHAT ARE THESE OTHER MODES PHYRGIAN DOMINANT AND WHAT IS ALTERED SCALE,,,, THE BARRY HARRIS 6TH,, AND HOW IS THE 7TH POSITION DIMINISHED BEING MOVED TO THE 2ND OR 6TH POSITIONS ,, I AM STUCK , FRUSTRATED CAN YOU FURTHER THE UNDERSTANDING OF MY THEORY, I HAVE PLAYED GUITAR BY EAR FOR YEARS , JUST LAST YEAR I HAVE WANTED TO LEARN THEORY, AND I USE A FEW GOOD TEACHERS RICK BEATO, WHICH IS CRAZY BRILLIANT SMART BUT I REALLY ENJOY YOUR PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDABLE WAY YOU TEACH AND , I USE YOU TO GO BACK AND FORTH AS MY TEACHERS LIKE DIFFERENT TEACHERS AT SCHOOL ,, WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME VIDEOS TEACHING MORE THAN JUST MAJOR SCALE, I'M FRUSTRATED
