I saw Warrant at Bachinal (sp) in San Diego in the early 90’s shortly after 80’s metal was eclipsed by the Seattle scene. There were 50 people there. 2 years earlier they were selling out arenas. Their equipment failed 1 song into the set. Jani Lane improvising, sat at the electric piano and with a single mic proceeded to play a collection of Queen and Beatles covers while sharing a bottle of tequila. What a gem he was.

Saw them at the Ritz in Detroit (Roseville) in 1989 right as Down Boys was just released. It was one of the best shows ever. It was before they really made it big so they were still hungry. I totally get why Jani struggled so much going from playing stadiums to playing large bars. They were a top national act in hard rock, gave great shows, and just because music changed, they are relegated to playing large bars. Would be very humbling, a bitter pill to swallow for sure.

Jani was a HUGE talent who sadly got lost in the hair metal heap. Most people know the first 2 records, but to me, his later work was his best. I got to meet him at a solo show in Baltimore and he was clearly not well. It's sad, because he was an incredible songwriter. Ultraphobic and Back Down to One are among his best work.

can you imagine if the song "face" had been released in 1992 and was on the Dog Eat Dog record? It would have been a hit. I mean, if "always" was a hit for bon jovi in 93-94, "Face" could have been.
Jani was a better songwriter than 99% of the the musicians in the genre, and probably would have scored a hit for another artist as a ghostwriter had he lived longer.
