  • Things are always changing, but for me amd my farm, this year is seeing 8 Major Changes. Some are new crops that are already proven local winners, or new organization systems, new business models, marketing strategies, Bouquet styles, Farmer's markets booth arrangements and work flow, or just plain old cleanliness, this farm is changing how it does business!
    Come along as I explain in more detail my thoughts behind each of these changes to the flower farm, and don't forget to voice your opinion down below in the comments. Don't have an opinion? Just leave me an emoji of your favorite animal down below so I know.

    I love your enthusiasm for lupine. I would personally start smaller as I get PM on mine (I live in central WA so similar climate) so thinking about chopping the foliage after they bloom. I guess you could also sell the plants if you didn’t love them. Just not as productive as I personally would want. House reno coming along beautifully. Good thoughts on marketing!

    I love your idea of putting some bouquets together during the farmer's market. As a consumer, Im always reluctant to approach a stand when the seller is standing there just waiting for me to come in. I feel more comfortable coming in and looking at a stand products if the seller looks busy but still available if I need it. Great video!

      When me and my sister sold at markets if we were not busy one of us would act like we were a shopper while the other would do “busy work”. We were always amazed how many people this brought in opposed to us just standing around

    Thanks for sharing all your plans for the farm and house. It's great that you're planning towards what will sell, and making the bouquets at the market makes sense. Customers could also have a say in what the arrangement looks like. Some people (me) like just bunches of one flower with some filler.

    Love the addition of Lupins. I grow in Nova Scotia and thought for years that it was a waste to grow lupins because they are everywhere but I sell just lupin bunches or mixed bunches no problem. I grow mainly the Russell Lupins and a few Galley for colour. They are a short lived perennial so I have them on a 3 year rotation.

    Thanks for showing us this new season. I’m excited to watch you and the farm grow. Regarding bouquets have you thought about adding single bunches of flowers for the market. I just listened to a farmer talk about how she only takes single bunches of flowers and no mixed bouquets to her market and her customers love it. Obviously every market is different but it might be worth a try. 😊

    Hi Becca, I know what you mean about prices, how high can they go? I'm 65 and live in Washington State. I have been a hairdresser since I was 19 and back then most haircuts we did were $5.50. The economy was good and we kept raising our prices in the next few years we doubled. Then we thought we raised too much. Now most of my haircuts are $55.00! I also want to say that I am very concerned about our administration that we ended up with. I, along with many Americans notice that mainstream media doesn't report the whole story. I have found a RUclips channel that has many, many guests and podcasts that are covering the unprecedented changes happening. Also they talk about how Canada has always been an alliance with us. The name is The Meidas Touch Network. Their community is horrified also about tarrifs being imposed on Canada. I liked your attitude, I too am a bit worried about my business, but what can you do? Stay strong , Teresa

    As an interior designer by trade, when my customers are having their cabinets redone, I always have the upper cabinet doors numbered A1, A2, etc. The lowers are numbered B1, B2, etc, and the island is C1, C2, etc. This is an easy flow for nubies brains to know exactly where they are going. A is this side and 20 is half way down. C is a separate area way over there.

Confusion is completely eliminated with the above system.

    About lupines.
    The flowers may begin to droop after being harvested but have risen again the next morning.
    They have a short flowering period, there will be no new flowers until next year, but if it has self-sown then you can get a smaller bloom in the autumn.
    If lupines self-seed, you get new interesting color varieties, but in the end they all turn blue.

  • @saramonder
    @saramonder 7 дней назад +3

    Slightly invasive plants kinda freak me out but it rains where I am. Lupin seeds are a big size so you could direct seed those in the cold early spring. Probably even use the seeder machine if the farm still has it.

    There are already a lot of good ideas there. I totally agree with you about yellow flowers. I'm not a big fan of these colorful bouquets, I lean more towards monochromatic looks. But tastes are different, I'm sure there are buyers for all variants. You are now dependent on what you have available anyway and the observations then result in the cropplanning for the coming years.
    Can you not keep the double doors as an entrance to the Airbnb unit and only convert part of them as an entrance door? That would be much cheaper and it would certainly be brighter too. For privacy you can work with a privacy film for the glass. Just an idea to save a bit of money and work.
    When do you expect the first tulips?

    I feel the same way about yellow & orange honestly!! I love sunflowers Black-eyed Susan, & Daffodils but other than that I am not the biggest fan and prefer purples/pinks. I do have my eye on a yellow orangish climbing rose though lol

    Hey Becca! Lupine is one of my favorite flowers, so I'm very excited to see the farm full of that! I had some thoughts on your plans.
    For the market stand, I'd make sure that there aren't any market rules related to safety and having your cutting station consumer facing. You may also need to explore insurance in case something were to happen. I know you don't plan on it but when things get busy and you're distracted, curious fingers may be in danger. I would also caution about the flow in the stand. I personally dislike entering stands that are "too busy" either with people trying to get in or with vendors trying to help and moving around and making me feel like I'm always in the way and unable to really look at the merchandise. You know your market and your customers though. I know you will make the best decision for you and them.
    I've said this before, but I'll say it again. I still think painting a floral mural of some kind on the length of the white fence by the road would really pull focus to your operation. If anything, it's a talking point that passers-by can relate to as a landmark. Could tie in well with your other marketing campaign ideas. Combine the mural with other interactive experiences like the large flower displays you had in the wire rack and you have Instagram ready marketing! You could even paint the back side for the Airbnb outdoor portion to really just customize your offering and offer year round beauty to bookers.
    Just ideas. Not criticism. Know that you are enough either way. Looking forward to spring!!

    • @Red_Roof_Flower_Farm
      @Red_Roof_Flower_Farm  7 дней назад

      Ive thought about chopping safety, I'll definitely do it in some.way no kids can get their finger in there. The fence unfortunately is at the end of its life span, the posts are all rotting so it's not really worth the investment in time and money to paint, although I do understand the mural vision. Thanks for watching!

      @@Red_Roof_Flower_Farm whatever you replace it with, make it Instagram worthy. There are locations where people deliberately drive to to get a photo in front of for their insta feed (yeah, It’s kinda daft but it’s a thing) - murals, walls of flowers, there’s a massive outdoor pink couch in Miami that people used to go to for photos… random but it gets you on the cultural map as a destination in your area.

    I’m not wild on yellow either… I do love it in Autumn palettes, and I do love an intentionally rainbow bouquet where it’s kept firmly in balance… and in Spring it’s great… golden ranunculus and daffodils are the sunshine we’ve been craving for months…. but it’s a colour that can overpower more subtle colours like pinks and paler shades, and turn a showstopper blue or purple flower from a leading lady into a background actor. And I HATED (with a passion) that all-yellow bouquet, lol. As a flower, it screams, and as you rightly point out, (sorta) screaming isn’t romantic 😂😂😂😂 it can be really insipid too. Insipid screaming. Ha ha ha, now that’s a combo.
    I’m really sooooo looking forward to seeing what kind of creative directions you’ll be trying. And can’t wait for lupins, as I commented last week, i always wondered why no lupins… the two tone band of nobles ones are so dramatic and eye catching… I know that spike flowers aren’t usually focals, but to me the lupin does both. I hope it turns out to be pest free for you and easy to grow.
    The market stall learning is invaluable, watching customer behaviour, but I wonder is this going to be the area where you are going to need - for time efficiency’s sake- to hire someone eventually to do all that standing around for you. It’s the least specialist job where you can find a student wanting weekend work for minimum wage, and if you do the set up and take down, you can then go home and crash after being up half the night making bouquets, or go back and replenish stand, do marketing. Do the things that only you can steer. I’m not a big believer in getting stock made on site, coz you end up needing more stuff there than you remembered to bring, or the distractions slow the process down, or it makes the stall messy & detracts from the wow factor that’s in your favour with a fully stocked stall… and time is your most valuable resource. Those hours spent working on something else without doing it slower ‘on show’ would be more productive I think. Though maybe I’m wrong, and you find it really does get people to stop… but having a day employee with a bouquet recipe could be taught to do it too if it’s value-adding. But initially, I can’t see how you could not be there and getting direct feedback on your creative directions as you develop them… it’s too valuable an insight to get it second hand from an employee, but maybe down the road… that would be the first place I’d be looking to hand over to someone else to claim that time back. It’s a lonnnnng day, and there are other priorities which need your stamp on them. Marketing is gonna be a biggie, use your creative humour, stand out… (read ‘Purple Cow’ by Seth Godin… it’s not a big book, but great marketing insight in it)… the real growth area screaming to be maximised is that roadside stand. Bring the market to you rather than standing all day at a stall. It’s an efficiency thing, and much more sustainable. 12 hrs working on an ad that goes viral will serve you better than 12 hrs standing at a stall.
    As a procrastinator & faffer myself, I did notice that the bulk of the bouquets seemed to get made between 2am and 4am after distractions would take over the earlier evenings… you’ve gotta be militant with your time and get them done at a sensible hour Becca… we don’t wanna see you driving yourself into the ground exhausted. ❤️
    Also… (Ahhh I’m sorry, I won’t shaddup) … letterbox flowers? Ever looked into those? Selling on sites like Etsy which have inbuilt traffic, being able to ship direct to their door in a PIP box and the buyer arranges them. And sales that can be done from your house, pop them in the post, and for a low outlay could expand your market a lot.
