According to the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey, the president is the head of state and represents the commander-in-chief of the Turkish Armed Forces on behalf of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The president serves for five years. One person can be elected president no more than twice. In the event that the president is unable to maintain his position due to illness, expulsion, death, withdrawal or any other reason, the oldest vice president shall act as acting president until a new one is elected. The president is elected by the people directly from among Turkish citizens who have reached the age of 40, have done higher education and are qualified to be elected as deputies. To date, 12 people have been sworn in as president while 5 people have been acting president. Of these people died of natural causes during the two tasks (Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Turgut Özal), was overthrown as a result of two military coups (Celal Bayar and Ihsan Sabri Caglayangil) and one for health reasons was dismissed by the Turkish Grand National Assembly (Cemal Gürsel). The first president was elected unanimously in 1923. Atatürk, who remained the most in this post with 15 years and 12 days, served four terms as President. Özal was the person who stayed at least 3 years and 159 days as President. Atatürk, who was 42 when he took office, is the youngest and Fahri Korutürk, who is 69, is the oldest president.
Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Anayasasına göre Cumhurbaşkanı devletin başıdır ve Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi adına Türk Silahlı Kuvvetlerinin başkomutanlığını temsil eder. Cumhurbaşkanı beş yıllığına görev yapar. Bir kimse en fazla iki defa cumhurbaşkanı seçilebilir. Cumhurbaşkanının hastalık, yurt dışına çıkma, ölüm, çekilme veya başka bir nedenle görevini sürdürememesi durumunda yenisi seçilene kadar en yaşlı Cumhurbaşkanı yardımcısı Cumhurbaşkanlığına vekalet eder. Cumhurbaşkanı 40 yaşını doldurmuş, yüksek öğrenim yapmış ve milletvekili seçilme yeterliğine sahip Türk vatandaşları arasından doğrudan halk tarafından seçilir. Bugüne 12 kişi ant içerek cumhurbaşkanlığı yaparken 5 kişi de Cumhurbaşkanlığına vekillik etmiştir. Bu kişilerden ikisi görevleri sırasında doğal nedenlerden hayatlarını kaybetti (Mustafa Kemal Atatürk ve Turgut Özal), ikisi askerî darbeler sonucu devrildi (Celâl Bayar ve İhsan Sabri Çağlayangil) ve biri Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi tarafından sağlık sebepleriyle görevden alındı (Cemal Gürsel). İlk Cumhurbaşkanı Atatürk, 1923'te oy birliği ile seçildi. 15 yıl 12 gün ile bu görevde en çok kalan kişi olan Atatürk, dört dönem Cumhurbaşkanlığı yaptı. Özal ise 3 yıl 159 gün Cumhurbaşkanlığı yaparak bu görevde en az kalan kişi oldu. Göreve geldiğinde 42 yaşında olan Atatürk en genç, 69 yaşında olan Fahri Korutürk ise en yaşlı Cumhurbaşkanıdır.
