- This song, and it's soulful melody, would probably be the most popular candidate for the title "Unofficial Anthem of Puerto Ricans Worldwide!" Of course such a title may never exist: nevertheless the Lamento (which I only heard for the first time in September 2010) seems to be the best known and most widely acknowledged and acclaimed masterpiece of the late great Borincano - Rafael Hernandez Marin (1892 - 1965) - El jibarito Inmortal !
José Feliciano does justice to this great composition with this rendition - released on his 2007 album "José Feliciano Y Amigos." A masterful performance in every sense.

As an "outsider" I yet can identify with the sentiments of, in this particular case, the people who love Puerto Rico as their homeland. Songs of this genre exist among many peoples of the world - this one though happens to have a particularly beautiful lyric and melody. It will never grow old - not even when the yearnings of the jibaritos are fully satisfied, since it will always remain a beautiful song - and no one can ever change that. Also, it eternalizes a part of Puerto Rico's history and culture.

84 anos despues de nacer esta composicion miles y miles de Puertoriquenos siguen exclamando su "Lamento Borincano" ante los oidos sordos de los oportunistas politicos y de aquellos compatriotas que llevan el patriotismo en el bolsillo y no en el corazon donde pertenece, necesitamos que vuelvan a nacer hommbres como Rafael Hernandez para que nos eduquen en como se honra y se defiende la patria.
Es obvio pero yo lejos opino por lo que vi cuando lo asilo un huracán o algo y se demoraron demasiado en ayudar a sus habitantes y no estaría malo que sus famosos y buenos artistas en sus shows a futuro a inicios de su presentación empiece su espectáculo con esta linda y real canción su himno cada cual a su estilo es muy bonita canción una obra

Jose Feliciano es un cantante legendario, pero creo que esta cancion ni a el le quedo buena. No hay como el inolvidable Javier Solis!
Mejor que Javier Daniel Santos.Como bóricua esta canción tocaba su corazón.

I know that the album on which this track was realeased is called "José Feliciano Y Amigos". Feliciano's husky and tuneful vocals are very distinctive to my own ear, but I have no information about which of his "amigos" sing supporting and accompanying vocals with him. As a native Puerto Rican himself, it would not surprise me to learn that Ricky Martin's is one of those voices.
Any clarificatiuon on the "Amigos" on this is welcome!

A Damaris Price: Estas casi correcta. Se retrata la realidad de ALGUNOS en PR para esa epoca. No debemos olvidar q los q se fueron a los estados eran precisamente los mas pobres de aquella epoca. No representa la mayoria de PR tampoco. Es una misconcepcion q se ha generalizado. Si te fijas la propia cancion te habla del "jibarito" del campo y su percepcion de la realidad. Es por eso q muchos Niuyoricans confunden su realidad.
