- Germany wanted to present itself as open and modern at the Munich 1972 Olympics. The cheerfully designed event was broadcast live on then still new color TV. But the tragic attack by Palestinian terrorists on the Israeli team turned the media into an unwitting accomplice. On this episode of Arts Unveiled we explore the fatal role of the media played in the 1972 Munich massacre.

The media will NEVER act in the best interest of society! ONLY IN ITSELF'S BEST INTEREST!!!
@@user-wz1ms8kz1q Not always. The courage of the Post in exposing Watergate and the President's role was in the best interest of the common good.
@@ellenchavez2043 it was still about thier readership and profits
@@user-wz1ms8kz1q Yes, but the owner and editor decided to move ahead with the story, regardless of outcome. Nixon was very popular and Watergate was seen as unpopular. They did the story not to boost readership. They did it because it had to be done.
And who decides what's in the "best interest of society"? The Germans were unprepared, disorganized, and it was their lack of action and bad decisions that lead to those deaths. Blaming the press for being there (and reporting what was happening) is like blaming the sun for shining.
And here we are fifty years later with the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians having been more or less decided but still far from an end to the violence
here we are again...😥
Well , im not anti Semitic, but im not a zionist. The Balfour declaration is garbage and so was the apartheid of 1948. No one should be entitled to land due to race or religion, we should just co exist and keep that stuff to ourselves.
Exactly, taking land off Palestine to settle Europeans was never going to work, Germany we're more than happy to let Britian deal with it, innocent civillians are still dying in their thousands thanks to this ridiculous decision, it's neither Israeli's or Palestinians who caused this conflict imo, Britian and now U.S have alot to answer for still denying Palestinians a state of their own and they have the audacity to supply bombs etc to Israel and blame the whole problem on Palestine, unbelievable.
Here we are again, terrorist attacking Israel.
Those two countries have been fighting since the dawn of time.
@@inkedbeast76 No? Zionism is a 19th century political philosophy and the concept of a nation state is less than a millennia old?
It must be remembered that Germany had no special units at that time, especially anti-terrorist ones. Therefore, untrained policemen (and a few hunters) were unable to deal with a group of Arab terrorists well trained by the Soviet secret services. German counterterrorism units were created only after this tragedy, also in cooperation with Israel. Meanwhile, the police officers protecting the Olympics were trained only to be nice and helpful, and to de-escalate tensions. They were supposed to remain invisible and operate very discreetly. They were also unarmed, there were no personal checks, no baggage checks, no clear division of powers and competences, etc. There were also frictions between the Bavarian government and the federal government and pressure from the Olympic Committee. The media only heated up the atmosphere, making money on sensationalism. Just like, for example, September 11, no one was prepared for something like this. It was something completely different and unexpected, and no one (including those from abroad) knew how to react.
the Israeli intelligence service wanted to intervene but germany didn't allow them
This is also the reason the gign was formed
Many nations had no counter terrorism units, airline cockpits couldn't be locked, fertilizer didn't have additives preventing it from becoming an explosive. These jerks who kill innocent people force lots of changes.
Dont forget that Its first leader Ulrich Wegener was a east german who was arrested for distributing leaflets
That is only partially true. A psychologist created a security profile in advance. One of his scenarios was almost exactly what Black September executed. But no extra security measures were taken. Also every possible mistake was executed, even in cases where you just needed common sense and thinking and no special education. And the worst thing: Israel offered its help and German in its incredible arrogance denied and claimed to have it all under control.
I’m from Munich originally, living since 20 years in Israel. So, I have sources from both countries: true that Germany wasn’t prepared particularly well, but instead of being humble and smart, their arrogance and stupid decision created the perfect storm of violence.
I remember being shocked when I came home from school and heard the news. I had been mesmerized by the Winter Olympics in Sapporo and was excited for Munich
I remember when i found out about the Weimar Republic- it was really shocking
Google the Talmud
I went to the winter games in Utah in 2002. This was the year after the 9/11 attack. The security was intense. I think Germany blew it. They were too intent on showing a new face.
4:01 one of the volunteers was Silvia Sommerlath, who would become Queen of Sweden.
4:05 is that the now Queen Silvia?
"They're All Gone" - Jim McKay
Weren't these the Olympics of Olga Korbut ? Sad that there was such tragedy at the same Games which had such athletic achievement.
I was very young then, but we watched this Olympics- and Wide World 🌐 🌎 of Sports- I recall the tension very well.
RIP the murdered athletes.
It was.
Yes!
Munich was the first Olympics that I can remember. Wow it is now 52 years ago. I can still remember the ABC news coverage of the of Israeli Munich Olympic massacre especially by sports broadcaster Jim McKay.
MEDIA has always wanted one thing :TRP
Nice video 📹 👍 👌 👏 😀

1948: Israel and Palestine had been in conflict for years with no clear end in sight.
1972: Israel and Palestine had been in conflict for years with no clear end in sight.
2048: Israel and Palestine had been in conflict for years with no clear end in sight.
2072: Israel and Palestine had been in conflict for years with no clear end in sight.
2148: Israel and Palestine had been in conflict for years.
Both nations disappeared with no trace left.
and the worst thing is they are carrying their conflict to other countries
4:12 Well, that's an unfortunate pose.
Uhmmm...why?

Why do a people have to resort to this every body has a history book
Sorry, we may not be following along yet. Could you please elaborate on your point?
I was just watching a meeting with the leaders of fatah about this operation.
They said they wanted to free hostages who were getting tortured from the israeli prisons.
@@ao9970 If that had happened, would they have actually freed the Israeli hostages?
@@rick188888 Yes they would. Unlike ISIS these groups did such operations to make prisoner exchange deals. The problem with government officials and decision makers is that they deal with the kidnappers with arrogance and don't take their threats seriously. Yes, they negotiate, but only to cover up their true intentions to use force against the kidnappers. The lives of the kidnapped seem to be the last thing that matters to the politicians. The strange about this incident is that the government released those arrested about a month after the failed rescue operation.
@@ao9970 you should be ashamed of yourself for this vile accusation. Just like with the Israeli hostages that are held captives by Hamas today, there is NEVER a justification for kidnapping innocent people from their homes, never. The Palestinians seem to always choose the way of murder, terror, kidnapping and massacres , even decades later, nothing is new. Even while knowing what the consequences would be for their own people. Sad truth is, they don’t care enough about their people to renounce the way of terror, and we should take them for their word once when they say “we love death the way you love life”
They didn't prepare for this eventuality.🤔
They really did thoroughly demilitarize.
They got caught lacking again
@advocateforaimassist8217 To be fair, Germans have always been hopeless in resolving hostage situations without bloodshed. Almost exactly 16 years after Munich, German commandos botched a hostage rescue operation where two robbers had taken a 19 (maybe 20) year old woman and held a gun to her head in a BMW. She was shot when the commandos started shooting at the robbers while the woman was seated just inches from them. Even 3rd world commandos could've done better.
15:08 dont know what came first. The hollowed masks terrorist wore or hollowed pumpkins for Halloween. One inspired the other to make it look deadly, scary and sensational too.
@@advocateforaimassist8217 In case, germans.

Because media is shit
Of course they continued with the games because the Germans had to make their money. That was so disgusting. The Palestinians had to make the world know what is happening in the Israeli nazi regime that has been committing the Palestinian Holocaust and that Palestinians are kidnapped and thrown into prison without charge or trial and are tortured. It's so sad the Israeli athletes were killed.
