This song has me crying after recently losing someone I knew in highschool to her husband. I’m so glad to read some of these comments and stories of people getting away from such a bad situation.
I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s so hard to know a friend is in a tough situation and feeling helpless to it. I hope other abuse survivors see your comment and know it’s okay and safe to leave
The murder is totally noncontroversial. Earl was such a huge jerk that everyone is just like "you go girl" and then we all laugh. How lovely that is ❤❤
Hello 👋 Jessica. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I’m Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Good god I remember being an empowered little girl romping on the farm, listening to this. What sticks with me the most is thinking of those girls/ladies coming together to end abuse, nurse wounds, solve a problem, and live happily ever after selling produce on the side of the highway, with the murder being just a comedic bit. I like to think that the Chicks primed my generation for abuse prevention through this song alone. I've always been there for my sisters and always will be. And man, where did those years go?
I got out of a three year abusive relationship with a man named earl and I was crying and my family sent me this it tbh helped me feel 10000x better than I was it stoped me from crying and made me laugh and sing along so I appreciate what you guys do as music!
I was in an abusive marriage back in 2014. I fled the state and went north to my dad. Fast forward 3 years later, I start a new job in a different part of Jersey, and found my now husband. He understands the trauma that I have been through. No one should be abused! I’m happy that domestic violence survivors have a voice through the Dixie Chicks.

We just sat there in shock before we asked her to play it again...and again...and again...and again. Let's just say we danced a little. Yes, they were. But even if they weren't, that little thing called the First amendment guaranteed their right to say what they said. Too bad Nashville is full of cowardly Neanderthals.
This is dedicated to my uncle Ron who, after 25 years of abusing my aunt Deanna, has finally contracted a staph infection that spread throughout his body and rendered him brain dead. They called Deanna about taking him off life support and she hung up on them and blocked the number.

Many years ago, I was to be a witness for an abuse case involving a 4yo girl - against her father (my neighbours at the time). I was also majorly harassed and threatened by the grandfather in an attempt to intimidate me into not testifying - which worked on two of the other witnesses - a babysitter and a pre school teacher. I was soooo angry about what he had done! And having experienced my own childhood and marital trauma, the emotions ran deep. This song was my catharsis song! I felt a bit naughty but played it over and over in my car on the way to & from EVERYWHERE, absolutely belting my lungs out to it! Thank you Chicks. You guys rock! You helped me express what I struggled to put words to, and that helped me to have the strength and courage I needed at a really difficult time xx

I'm 19 and can't believe I just heard this song for the 1st time ever when it came on the radio in the garage with my dad last night. The second it started I said "ooo this sounds good" loved the melody/singing instantly. We were in the middle of moving stuff when the chorus hit "That Earl had to die!", I immediately paused and went "😯 Oh my gosh I love this". Immediately put it on my playlist. Watched this vid about 3 times now. You know when a song is so good, that it makes you cry from how good it is? Not even just sad songs. I'm just getting choked up smiling at how good this deceptively upbeat song about getting rightful revenge is!!
i just started a new job where no one knows i was in an abusive relationship a few years back and today this came on the radio and it was the first time i had heard it so i started crying but was trying to hide it, and i looked at my coworker and he was crying too. we both teared up at the wore sun glasses and long blouses part and the other two guys in the truck with us didnt get it but damn dv has touched so many of us.
I love this song. I still remember being surprised it was so controversial when it came out. Half the movies in the '80s and '90s featured the bloody, graphic deaths of villains at the hands of righteous heroes, who really enjoyed doing it. I guess it's because women did (and enjoyed) the killing in 'Goodbye Earl,' and a frightening number of American men didn't consider a guy like Earl a villain.
My ex has just been put in prison for r*pe, GBH, coercion and theft. After 6 years I am so so so happy and playing this song on repeat. Happy fucking tears man

This song came out when texting was in its infancy. The Tulsa, OK and Oklahoma State Troopers recommended that people in domestic violence have a code word to use with friends and family to text as a cue to call the authorities, in case they take your phone. "One of the greatest songs ever written. Go _Dixie Chicks_ " ???? The Dixie Chicks didn't write this. It was written by the great songwriter Dennis Linde, whose previous biggest hit was 28 years earlier, the #2 Hot 100 song "Burning Love" by Elvis Presley in 1972.
There has been a solid list of historical and popular songs which justify men murdering women. Both men and women, for a long time, have believed the reasoning of those songs--because they are on the air, in our lives. Part of the culture. The question recently came up in a group of women singers: are there any songs about women killing "men who done women wrong"? Without a blink, we all said, " Earl." Thanks, Chicks, for giving a voice to the Other! You had the balls and the words!
I've always thought of this as a contemporary murder ballad, like the really old folk tunes in which the girl gets murdered and the perp sings about it.
LMAO!!!! This has been my anthem for years!! Sure, I am lonely and would love to have someone to hold me and "love" me, but I have had to shutter my heart and have not had anyone in my life for 6 years 😉

I remember my mom showing me this song about 5 years ago, my eyes went wide as the lyrics went on and I got hooked! Can't wait to show my future daughter this!
My sister showed me this. She was in a relationship with an Earl and her friends husband is in law enforcement (dont remember the name but ik its higher than cops) when they were driving to the hospital the husband had his gun out the whole time.
my girlfriend showed this to me (we're both girls) because she shipped Mary Anne and Wanda and we're always looking for WLW content and I was not disappointed
This song actually raises some interesting questions about victims of trauma and whether we have a right to judge them for taking matters into their own hands when they are failed. Even if we may not agree with the ethics of vigilante justice, if these ladies got caught and I were the judge, I might give them some kind of "slap on the wrist," like 30 days of community service or something.
Cassidy truth. They had a deep loving friendship. A bond that a lot of people will never experience. To the other commenters, you don't have to be gay to experience a special bond between someone of the same sex. All relationships don't have to be sexual. My best friend and I are thick as thieves, but we're not gay for one another.
These women were comical and musical staples of my generation. Her voice is amazing and the harmonizing is on point. I miss them and I hate that the only reason today’s kids don’t know of them is because Natalie made a statement regarding a president most of us were upset with at the time.
At the time? Nope. At the time, they weren't remotely the only people who got slapped for refusing to support Bush Jr. and the war. Michael Moore got booed at the Oscars, Martin Sheen was fired by Visa. Being anti-war was being anti-troop. If you didn't have a yellow ribbon your car and Toby Keith's "boot up their ass" music playing on your radio, you were unAmerican. And we all had an obligation to support our President in war-time, especially after 9/11, regardless of whether or not we actually agreed with his decisions. It wasn't until years later, after the war was deemed a disaster that never should have been started, and everyone had proof that they'd lied about the reasons we started the war, that most people were against it and happy to hear people crapping on Bush Jr. and his administration. But at the time, ESPECIALLY in country music, what happened to The Chicks is precisely what you would've expected to happen to them. Their experiences were the emblem for the anti-anti-war sentiments at the time. It didn't devolve into full McCarthyism, but from those who had lived through both periods, it was deemed eerily familiar.
This reminds me of my BFF from hs who was in the same situation seeing the black eye makes me cry every time I love her and would gladly help her any way I can to get away

I've always thought this song was so unique and important. This, Janie's Got a Gun, and Independence Day by Martina McBride. All of them explicitly share stories about domestic violence and abuse and that's such an important topic that is not sung enough about, especially considering the time periods those songs were made.
This is such a great video! Love how the scenes were shot; how Wanda was shown being thrown to the ground and then walking into the lawyers office without the need to cut. Everything was shot to match the flow of the song and story. Videos aren't filmed this way anymore.

Good god I remember being an empowered little girl romping on the farm, listening to this.

Hi
"One of the greatest songs ever written. Go _Dixie Chicks_ " ????
The Dixie Chicks didn't write this. It was written by the great songwriter Dennis Linde, whose previous biggest hit was 28 years earlier, the #2 Hot 100 song "Burning Love" by Elvis Presley in 1972.
Written by Dennis Linde in the 90s.
Independence Day by Martina McBride… although it’s sadder
I've always thought of this as a contemporary murder ballad, like the really old folk tunes in which the girl gets murdered and the perp sings about it.
Written by Dennis Linde in the 90s. Originally on "Sons of the Desert" band album and covered by chicks in 1999 album.
Guys, it’s my first time hearing this song, 1:37… _WAIT WHAT_ 🤣🤣🤣
Earl had to die
LMAO!!!! This has been my anthem for years!! Sure, I am lonely and would love to have someone to hold me and "love" me, but I have had to shutter my heart and have not had anyone in my life for 6 years 😉
Learned a lot of songs in American music history course in my university. This song is the only one that pops on my mind from time to time. Such strong impact
this song was written to be funny. Earl the rotting corpse dancing to the music too. no depth or imagination to it. kind of write words that rhyme and meaning comes later.
It truly is a woman's ballad. Right up there with legendary Divinyls. Pleasure and pain, I touch myself. Chrissy Amphlett music lives in every woman's heart.❤❤❤❤
I remember my mom showing me this song about 5 years ago, my eyes went wide as the lyrics went on and I got hooked! Can't wait to show my future daughter this!
@Mira Image if she does I'm hurting him
My sister showed me this. She was in a relationship with an Earl and her friends husband is in law enforcement (dont remember the name but ik its higher than cops) when they were driving to the hospital the husband had his gun out the whole time.
It should be part of every girl's curriculum. Hell, even the boys should get it as a cautionary lesson.
my girlfriend showed this to me (we're both girls) because she shipped Mary Anne and Wanda and we're always looking for WLW content and I was not disappointed
Hell I'm showing it to my sons as a cautionary tale not to be an earl
The Dixie chicks are goated it not even up for debate.
Look up Spousal Abuse Syndrome (AKA Battered Women Syndrome). It's a legitimate murder defence.
Yup! If a man ever beat me, he would dead for sure!

ONE OF THE FUNNIEST SONGS AND VIDS OF ALL TIME.
These women were comical and musical staples of my generation. Her voice is amazing and the harmonizing is on point. I miss them and I hate that the only reason today’s kids don’t know of them is because Natalie made a statement regarding a president most of us were upset with at the time.
Well, fortunately, they're back! :)
Which is funny, considering what celebrities and media is allowed to say about our current president.....
Icons of their time
And pioneers in president bashing lol

I love how this beautiful masterpiece of a song has better transitions than current videos circling around youtube.
I'm in Italy in 40 degree C weather and this song still gives me major goosebumps
I think people find Earl all the time. They just roll him up in his tarp again and throw him back.
Best comment hahahaaa

*snortchortle* followed closely by a long "guffaw* (excellent comment)
yep
Yep
I was in college in a rural area when this song came out, and my dorm was on a female-only floor. Prolly the first time a lot of those girls had lived in a female-only space. After classes, in the evening, we'd open up the doors and someoen would put this on, and EVERYONE would sing. Just ... sing out the demons.
Did you ever learn how to spell probably? Prolly not.
@@davanyo1 We get it. You've never been invited to a party.
This is storytelling perfection. I remember bouncing on the trampoline to this as kid. Brilliant.
Yo as a young black girl I had to hid my love for this song. But I swear this use to be my ish back then. Lol I’m only 28 now. But those were the good ol’days!!
Literally same!!!!
