buying books is good for the soul
I will also be reading The Master & Margarita this year
Thanks for the upload. Your enthusiasm for these reads really shows through and makes me want to check them out. ❤
Great book haul! Your enthusiasm is contagious.
Hope you added a few to your reading list!
I'm currently reading Indignation by Philip Roth. A pretty nice novel about family and fear of the uncertain future. It's really short and easy to read. From your video I got really interested in reading "And Quiet Flows The Don", I just added on my wishlist. Great video!
The Bell Jar is my favorite book! It's something I read at the right time and I haven't been able to 'dethrone' it as number one. After I read it I went into a deep dive learning as much as I could about Sylvia Plath because I hadn't known it was inspired by her life. I needed to know how much of Esther's story was Sylvia's. I highly recommend her Unabridged Journals for more insight and context.
I definitely plan to read more Plath in the future!
Been watching your videos since November, last year!! And you helped me get through Nietzsche that I was trying to get through for very long.. Keep the videos coming brother really enjoying watching them
Would there be a chance for you to ever create a book club?🥰
I'd love to in the future as the channel grows
The Master and Margarita is one of the best novels I read. Be sure to read about Bulgakov's life after you finish the novel. This made my book experience even better.
I'll be sure to do that! I did the same for Sholokhov and was fascinated by his personal life as well
Great list of books! Now I want to read "The Bell Jar" and maybe try to dive into the Sholokhov's masterpiece.
It seems like you're interested in the Russian literature, so you should read something of Andrey Platonov imo. At least "Foundation Pit" and/or "Chevengur".
I fell in love with DFW as a writer after reading his speech This is Water. I also recently have been wanting to read more of him and picked up Oblivion which is another collection of short stories. One of my favorites that I read years ago is Good Old Neon. Still mustering up the courage to read Infinite Jest
You can do it! IJ is certainly a bigger commitment but in my opinion noticeably better than his shorter works. Oblivion is on my list for the future
I actually couldn't get into And Quiet Flows the Don - now I have to try it again!
Just finished Master and Margarita and LOVED it's chaos! You should really read the Pevear and Volokonsky translation. In my humble opinion, they're the best Russian Translators of our time!
I agree, all my Dostoevsky works are Pevear and Volokonsky translations!
Saw on your Goodreads that you weren’t a big fan of Blood Meridian. If you ever feel like giving Cormac McCarthy another shot, I would recommend All the Pretty Horses! It’s written very well and I thought it had a good balance of slice-of-life and drama.
The story felt quite aimless and repetitive while I was reading it, but the ending did suck me back in and further reflection makes me want to revisit Blood Meridian in the future. I’ll check those recommendations out!
Trees give us two things essential for life - oxygen and books.
I didn't even know you uploaded the last video. I just thought you were taking a break or something. RUclips is weird.
But I'm glad you're not quitting or nothing. I like this channel and some of the books you provide.
Maybe not a video every single week, but I'm not going anywhere! Grateful for the support this channel has received
I recently watched a film called "Come and See" and i love work of fiction and non-fiction that challenge the conventional ideas that we as a collective populace tend to take a stance on without a thought of our own. Now I really want to read Consider the Lobster so bad lol it sounds interesting.
A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again, might be the better essay collection to start with if you haven’t read that yet
You should look up Sylvia Plath more. Her marriage to famous poet Ted Hughes is part of her pain. Her compiled journals and letters tell you a bunch about her.
An Instagram reel highlighting their relationship was actually how I stumbled upon her. I’ll be sure to keep their turbulent relationship in mind
@@TheActiveMind1 Her letters and journals really provide some insight into her life. Hughes’ affair with Assia Wevil was the nail in the coffin. If you’re interested, two books on her are Red Comet and The Last Days of Sylvia Plath.
Can you do what you did with nietzsche's works but for aristotle
I’ll keep that in mind! I’ve considered Descartes, Kafka, and others as well
Did you read the cairo trilogy by Nagib Mahfouz?
I haven't but I'll look into it
when are you buying Malazan? :D
I haven’t gotten into fantasy yet but perhaps I will soon!
its very philosophical and has some of the best prose that I have read in the English language, pls consider it chief @@TheActiveMind1
Only one woman? That's a little depressing. There are so many worthy authors out there. I advocate for a good mix. Also, maybe sprinkle a little contemporary fiction in there? Lots of great titles to be had & new voices to be heard. I do love that you pull from world literature however, so your reading is not just U.S.-centric. Overall, interesting choices, but I'd branch out from the dead white guys. (I don't mean that to sound harsh. There are just so many wonderful viewpoints one can discover, and you seem very open-minded.)
Hey Susan! I’ve read a number of outstanding female authors, including one of my wife’s favorite contemporary fiction writers Sarah J Maas. This video just happens to cover a few books I bought, but do not mistake any lack of inclusion as the result of deliberate exclusion. I have an extensive TBR and most of the books I read/buy tend to be what’s pulling at my heart strings at the moment or simply what I find at the book store. With that said, who are some of your favorite authors I should keep an eye out for?
