Thanks for pointing out that this is the complete ballet - for some reason Chandos fail to highlight this fact - which is the selling point of this CD for me.
There is also a new CD of the Sinfonietta by Dima Slobodeniouk (the coupling is Prokofiev and Britten Sinfonietta) on BIS which sounds sharper to Tovey's. But I won't miss Tovey for the complete Les Animaux Modèles. Great stuffs.
This is an intelligently programmed disc. The performances are all excellent and recorded with state-of-the-art sound, though I agree with Dave that Tingaud’s sprightly Poulenc is hard to beat.
I'm curious what you think of Dutoit's Poulenc Sinfonietta. It's just a touch slower than Tingaud's, but offers so much more colour and warmth, to my ears. Besides, it's coupled with a delightful Suite française.
Thank you for reminding me of the joys of Poulenc. I've just ordered this disc. I'm enjoying listening to Poulenc's Piano Concerto as I write this.
Bramwell Tovey recently passed away, he was about to assume his new post as Music Director of the Sarasota Orchestra.

Based on this review, I listened again to Tingaud's recording of the Sinfonietta. I forgot how much it crackles and snaps.
Listening to his music for L'Invitation au château right now! I'll have to look into that since I only have the suite.
Interestingly enough, Les animaux modéles was premiered during the Occupation, and it daringly quotes a well-known anti-German French song!

I think his Poulenc is mostly dreadful, Sinfonietta included.
Oh, well...
I heard another good recording of the Sinfonietta by George Pretre that should still be available here on RUclips and CD.
Pretre is nothing special.
Pretre only recorded the Suite, not the complete ballet, which left a sizeable gap in the EMI (now Warner) Poulenc catalogue.
Listen to the 2nd movement of Les Animaux modèles, right after 1:15. It's just a fleeting moment but so Strafunsky! 🤣
Oh yeah!
