My Father served on the JFK from 68-72, he recently passed on 12/28 at 77yrs old. I know he's onboard right now taking the last trip with big John. RIP. 😭
Served onboard 1980-82.There will always be a place in my heart for Big John! Wanted to be there in Philly to see her off but just found out last evening it was leaving today. Thanks for the detailed vid..
I wish I got to see this. I went to the wharf in New Castle, DE around 11 am hoping to see it, but it was nowhere to be found. It looked like it was still in the harbor of Philadelphia when the stream ended, and I had no idea when it was going to pass by New Castle. I was freezing my ass off and needed to use the restroom, so I just left. I think it left late.
Man, they're really trying to clear out the boneyard there in Philly. When does the SS United States move out? Is there a pool on when/where it actually sinks, as opposed to the plan?
Definitely not perfectly good. She was literally falling apart on our last deployment. She was decommed in 2006 and has just been sitting there empty. She will be cut up and sold as memorabilia and metal scrap.
I don’t know why they store this mega ships so far way to sit for decades only to pay millions to guide down to Brownsville, TX to sell for $1 a pounds for scrap….straight BS…
This was an awesome video! Especially for me. I served on the Big John 93-96. It was surreal seeing it leave. Brought back memories when leaving dry dock in 94. I happened to be flying in from California this Friday to see my old ship, but unfortunately I was 2 days too late. At least Ill get to see the Eagles play Sunday and inauguration on Monday...
My last duty in the Navy. I retired off her when underway to the Med in 97. So sad that a super carrier never made it to be a museum.
My first ship. I started her decomm and then transferred before it was finished.

It hurts to see this. She was my home from early 1979 to August 1982.
@Hi_Ho_Methusalem I was ships company AIMD 80 to 82. Left just before IO cruise . What division were you in?
Thank you for the beautiful video.
Many thanks for the outstanding video coverage!! Proudly served 1985-2011
Served on board 1982 to 86 Weapons dept. Great memories....very sad to see her go
After all the neglect, it still floats perfectly
it is just surface rust and COULD BE refurbished if was needed in an emergency...
Thank you for your service USS JFK you will be remembered. Even though we have a new JFK on the way!
Thanks for the great video! Hopefully it gets a big welcome in Texas like they did for kitty hawk! Plus plenty of videos!
Fun Fact: Before it left it insulted a Packers fan.
😢 Thank you for sharing!!!! Happy and sad sight ...
I served on the Forrestal WESTPAC I know the feeling The Forrestal Association was hoping she would become a museum but to no avail
served on her 76-78. 2 cruises with VFP-63 DET2
My first duty ship 1977 to 81.
"served" 1980-1981, "1 Med cruise" What a Junker then, kept breaking down, held together with, "SNIPE" POWER. RIP Big John.
So sad. They should be sent to the Philippines and convert it to a coast guard ship.

Was on there from 87-91, transfered after desert storm.😢
How far is the ship from paulsboro
Wish i could get sone of the gauges and control panels out of it before it gets destroyed 😭😭😭
What a waste. Perfectly good Carrier and 2 Cruisers, relegated to the scrap heap so that Admirals can have million dollar/year jobs after retirement.
Admirals who allow friendly fire incidents at that.

@judsonkr Why did my Comment about SS United States get censored? When is it leaving?

Nuclear? what happened to the powerplants....could power a small city for cheap!
She was not nuclear powered. They ran out $. Os she was the last boiler powered CV
And the Navy is going to name a carrier after Slick-Willie... Disgusting.

Instead of scrapping her should have converted her to nuclear saving billions of dollars
I agree I remember going down to the navy yard and looking at this ship she was a beauty too bad the navy didn’t see any potential to keep this ship
