This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art.

Thank you for taking this emotional rollercoaster. My recap: You can travel freely in a Europe w/o borders but the pain of the loss of loved ones travels with you. Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage.

For me the winner of Eurovision Songcontest 2024. Sad lyrics, a ode/letter to his parents in a happy hardcore melody of the 90's, originatedin The Netherlands. When he was 12 years old, his dad died, and his mother died when he was 13 years. He promised his dad that one day he will be performing on the Eurovision Songcontest stage. His papa=dad told him that there were no grenzen= borders=boundaries=limitations. The world has no boundaries so he travelled to every country in Europe, with good food, but even that couldn't keep him from feeling the pain and being alone without his parents. He paid many money for therapy but no one could help him. He with the two other guys on the scooters are in the colour of the Dutch national flag. The white one his angel, the red one the devil.
The burning of his childhood house and picture simbolise him leaving the pain in the past, and a new fresh beginning, without forgetting the memories.

If you really want to know what Europe is like, take a vacation of at least 4 weeks and travel to the different countries you are interested in. Every country has it's own culture, but also it's own views about racism, religion, nationalism etc. One thing you will be amazed about is: you don't have to pay for healthcare. So if you fall and break your legs, it wil cost you nothing or at most €400,- depending on the country to break your legs. So I say break a leg (in Europe! 😂 ) and go for it! Last year i traveld by car with some Friends from northern Germany through Luxembourg, through France to our Destination in Katalonia (Spain)... 4 Europe Countrys... there were no forced Border/Customs stops for us... it was a great feeling for me and it hardend my trust in the Union
Where ever you want to go, please cross a border. Any border. Americans should travel. The knowledge you will gain from it will stay with you for the rest of your life. No education will teach you what travelling will. Trust me, I've done it.🍀
