- Tod chats about the magnificent A479 German Longsword from the Wallace Collection that he recently reproduced. An iconic sword even though it was put together from the parts bin of time.

I'm a real sucker for hollow grinding on a blade. That's a pretty one.
Its amazing.
The way he holds it one handed it looks light weight as made from plastic
Beautifully executed. I would love to see how you achieve such a deep hollow grouund fuller. The piece is a masterwork. Thanks for sharing it.
The grind is so deep it’s almost like two massive fullers that run the entire length of the blade
That sword reminds me of the one Boromir carried in the Fellowship of the Ring film.
Yes
Beautiful work, Tod. I’ve been lusting after that sword since I saw Matt Easton review it. Truly, a magnificent blade.
Damn, that's the Mercedes Benz amongst swords. Seems like Germans liked their stuff to be fancy. 💪😅
@@ptonpc it's fancier to get hit by a Porsche than by a Nissan 😅💪
@@AFCAWorldBodybuildingArchive Definitely. You can admire the workmanship of the blade at is plunges into your chest :D
@Jon Doe Don't want to be murdered with any old piece of tat!
I imagine this was equivalent to carrying a $3.5K AR-15 for the era.
Bling bling has always been a thing. Just think of the Landsknecht
Superb!! As always...your peices are jaw dropping, in their physical beauty as well as functional.
Beautiful sword. Just brimming with swordiness.
It certainly is
When your work makes you feel like that, its no longer work, your craftsmanship speaks volumes, almost as much as your grin talking about it!
Very cool stuff sir! Thank you for sharing some of the details about the blade. I hope I get to see one in person someday.
Good to see you here love your videos
Tod I've been watching your work for a good while now and I have to say your reproductions are magnificent.
I love that beautiful, broad blade.
Beauty. For me swords are a rare combination of physical beauty and functional beauty.
Beautiful sword and great work. Thanks for sharing.
Holy cow, you are correct. That is an absolutely stunning blade. Well done.
Love the look of the blade.
Beatiful, beatiful sword. The broad blade and the hand-and-a-half handle reminds me of RPG "broadsword" that some wandering warrior would use. Fantastic work, keep it up!
That’s a gorgeous work of art!!! Love it!
So ...you love it, it has a pair of rings, it's hinting.
Looks like you could really, fuckin... KILL some bastard with that thing. Nice work. Lots of bling, but so tasteful as well. It looks like it could actually chop a guy in half.
Nice work you are a Master of you craft and the logo on the door is a nice touch
"This is a Landsknecht sword, if they didn't like bling...what DID they like?
A slicer , a stabber , the whole piece is stunning .
Your videos are so super aesthetic and enjoyable to watch. Please continue with your channel!
You've ever right to be proud of that sword, it's a beautiful piece of work. Thank you for sharing that.
Ive held the original, it is a superb sword and made by a master of there craft. Where reproduction fall short is the weight.
This is just one gorgeous piece! I hope that one day I'll be able to afford one of these :D
This sword is a BEAUTY.
Just ordered one of his knives on his cutler site. Cant wait.
If the blade and the hilt weren't originally matched, is it possible that the hilt was matched to a thinner blade which would have allowed the finger ring to be used? That sword is absolutely gorgeous, but I'm very partial to the scabbard as well. Scabbards were such beautiful pieces of art, and too often we see them as very plain and dull nowadays.
amazing work Tod greetings from Greece
Nice job on the hollow grind.
Now there is a gorgeous piece of work. Fabulous!
You're absolutely right, it is gorgeous!
Gorgeous work Tod. What are the odds that the blade was married to the hilt in the 19th century, perhaps to make one good piece from 2 poor or damaged ones? The "decorative" finger ring seems to point to a narrower blade in the first incarnation of the sword.
@@tods_workshop still a damned beautiful thing, intentional or not.
That blade is absolutely massive
Grinding that blade must have been nerve racking. Nice skills 🤠👍
Are there any videos of you actually making it or others....I love watching the process!
It is beautiful, I'll agree, but your Swiss saber - A489 - is even more glorious and would be the one sword I'd want to own if it came down to that being my life.
Just beautiful!
I really like the crossguard and the broad blade.
I haven't seen such a broad blade very often, but i really like it. There is a certain surreal or even fantasy feel about this sword that i really like.
Aside from the weigth, (which isn't an issue here) why didn't they make such broad blades more often back then? It looks more sturdy than others so it sould be a improvement imo.
Would such a sword behave differently (worse?) in combat compared to a more narrow one?
If I'm not mistaken, the super pointy swords came about as plate was more on more used and started covering more and more of the body.
I have to say, you must have the best job ever!
daaamn bro.. this thing rules
Could you do a video about the Landsknecht? Super interested in their weaponry and history!
May I ask, which part of the country do you live?
It looks amasing, realy well done
Very nice work Tod
Landsschneck.😂
Cracks me up every time!
But jokes aside, great sword!
Now that you reminded me of those excellent videos with Toby Capwell, will you actually be keeping this one or is it sold already?
Maybe one of those days you actually deliberately have to make a blade imperfect so you can justify keeping it.
Absolutely stunning piece!! Such a massive blade for a longsword. What size wheel did you hollow grind it on?
I also love this piece. I remember when you first made this. It was an absolute stunner. The more and more of these you made the better they got. At least from the pictures that's what it looked like to me. The half wire grip just took it to another level. Cord wrapped leather is nice, but oh man the half wire. This might stay my favourite piece ever, maybe until you make the A697. But, the blade on this will always be my favourite. There is a similar piece in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum: instagram.com/george_steel_armours/p/Buo5ZSZnecZ/?igshid=hif17h7mjmfw. You might be interested in taking a look at it. It is paired with the Maximilian style armour.
TL sorry, I can't seem to find an online catalogue for their collection like the wallace has. You are best off asking the original poster of that photo or contacting the Germanisches Nationalmuseum itself.
that armor is BREATHTAKING!!!!
Fine craftsmanship bro!👍👍👍😉😉😉
@@tods_workshop welcome bro😁😁😁
Hi, it’s saying the video is unavailable. I’m from the US. Not sure if just problems on my end, or some sort of regional permissions thing.
I had the same problem, but now it's available for me. See if it works for you now.
Tod's Workshop It is, thank you.
Whoa! bling me up hans! that is a fantastic blade! : )
i like the a612 sword-rapier
If the hilt originally had a narrower blade it stands to reason that the finger ring wouldn't work for the wider blade and some of it may have been removed
I like to imagine the owner of this sword to be a knight that also made a fortune by importing, planting and selling garlic - and because of that he demanded a sword with a custom pommel resembling garlic... :D
You can learn a lot about someone by asking what their favorite weapon is, what customized details they'd like etc, and why
Re the finger ring: perhaps the guard was taken from a sword with a narrower blade, and/or one with a ricasso?
i always love broad blades
If I wanted to buy a sword like that but I want it shorter how can I find out what it cost and can you ship to the US. What is the time frame like on ordering one.
makes me think of Boromir's sword
Good work as usual. Finger ring size is nice detail, I think that it was sizing mistake during manufacture which was not corrected, probably because it was not considered essential.
You may also consider making replica of number 476 - single edged two-handed sword. Looks crude (probably because of grip which may be replacement) but effective and definitely with its own character.
Looks heavy.
Tod's Workshop it just looks a little fat. but if it's not it's not.
Can you do a giant hammer or battle axe? That would be cool to see
Magnificent!
Magnificent.
What are the benefits of a very wide straight sword?
yup...really good !
I saw the title in my notifications and I was rather confused as it said "Tons" instead of "Tods". I can only assume it was a typo and was corrected 😂😂
Today that's an epic looking sword, what's the ball park cost for you to make a sword like this?
Trex Fishtec Last I checked it was around £2,500 (roughly $3,500) which is steep, but considering you get a hand forged blade and that beautiful scabbard, it’s quite competitive with other hand made swords of similar style.
Its really nice! :D
Have you used it in any type of faux-combat ?!? -- I would like to know how your product stands-up.
Can anyone identify the music at the end?
It is indeed magnificent, but I wonder how that beautiful blade would look with a cross guard like the Albion Alexandria?
(I don't know why, but I love that style of cross guard on thicker blades, It just does something for me.
And I wonder how the Alexandria would function if it had a hollow grind, much like this beaut'.)
I was curious about the hollow grind, because I had seen several artistic pieces were it looked like blades similar to the Alexandria were being used in armour with heater shields.
(Which would mean that someone never skipped either arm or back day at *Ye Olde Gym* ™.
Or perhaps there may have been a hollow grind to help with that?)
Doesn't the fact that you can get your finger through the finger ring tell us that the original blade was narrower?
Gorgeous. :)
It is a very attractive sword. I wounder if it is the best sword for combat? I mean that is not the entire function of this sword. It should be great, but the best? It sure is the best when it comes to showing off how tacticool you are...tacticool is a modern term for people with modern weapons that are sexy like this, ha.
Let's see it cut something. Put it in Mat Easton's hand and let him put it through some work. Pretty is as, Pretty does. Thanks
Wow. I think I should become a landsknecht. Lol
*Lube Works*
That hexagon grip looks fairly uncomfortable.
that all blade is 1,5kg wtf.... that looks massive
That thing is awesome. I wish something like that was within my skill level as a knife maker or in my budget.
Didn't heart's also symbolize balls at some points in history?
What are the chances that that blade type is really late 14th century? A lot of the survivals of blades like that which I see are much later (usually lumped as a Type XXII in the Oakeshott, but obviously swords don'te exist to conform to type.) This isn't to attempt to talk down to you or Toby Capwell. I'd be THRILLED to see such a blade given a longer lifespan in our histories. And I'm a total nut for 14th century anything.
ill take it
I want to swing that sword it's so swordy!!!
I want one! \o/
oh I like that
I believe the soul is in the brain. If you need a new heart they can put someone else’s in you and you are still you but the Brain is different. If it gets hurt then you are just fucked or dead.
in german tradition, the heard is where courage comes from
Lol i love it just love it 🤣
Looks like a Bastard Sword?
i would like to own one 31 i live in canada
Personally i like much more austere, modest designs, the one that a really devout knight would use. However this is really beautiful.
Oh man you really butchered the pronunciation of "Landsknecht" :D If youre intrested in how its pronounced just put the words "Land(s)" and "Knecht" in google translate and let it read to you :)
Edit: Or just the whole word. Google translate does it quite well
Thicc
That is a bastard sword not a long sword . A long sword is a one handed weapon with a thinner blade . It is bad to the bone though for sure
Uh... No. A long sword is a term commonly applied to one-handed swords in video games, but not in history/HEMA communities. 'Arming sword' is the common term for a one-handed cut-and-thrust straight sword; their blades were commonly narrower than that, this is true. But then again, that's true of the overwhelming majority of straight swords. 'Long sword' is a term commonly used to mean a hand-and-a-half or two-handed sword that is still a sidearm, that is to say it's a weapon that's meant to be worn with a reasonable degree of comfort, possibly in everyday life. It's a rather broad category; bastard swords are typically regarded as a sub-class of long swords. The techniques used when wielding them, while not entirely identical, are similar enough that they can be regarded as the same kind of weapon.
@@Someonestrange1000 a hand and a half sword is a bastard sword , i would guarantee that you wouldnt last 20 seconds in a real fight wielding that sword with one hand . I dont play video games .
@@corporateworldwokeslave3589 ... Like I said, a bastard (or hand-and-a-half) sword is a sub-category of long swords, which are predominantly 2-handed. Unlike most long swords, bastard swords can be used relatively effectively with one hand, although one would not do so without a good reason. I have not said anything to the contrary.
In case of this particular sword, there have been arming (one-handed) swords of both similar length and weight, albeit the longer grip would affect the balance. Indeed, it is chiefly the length of the grip that differentiates a long sword from an arming sword. rather than the length of the blade. As a case in point, many of the later rapiers had blades 40 inches long, some more than that. However, the overwhelming majority of rapiers were one-handed swords.
@@Someonestrange1000 well said friend , i meant no offense . I am of scottish descent and have wielded a few as my uncle is a high end collector . You gotta have the tendon strength , dexterity and timing to wield most med to large swords . Im 6,4 250lbs drywaller and its difficult for me , i prefer my wakizashis lol .
@@corporateworldwokeslave3589 YOU can wield, but you wont unless necessariy I do HEMA and there are techniques where you use longswords (including the sub-category known as bastard swords with one hand)
thats a hand and a half sword... a bastard sword.. not a longsword..
