Fascinating stuff. I'm 35 and just getting into learning about Linux and the foundational role of coding behind all the apps and such we use. I'll 100% check out XMPP. Thanks for sharing. P.S. You're a talented young speaker.
my dude that was an excellent presentation! humour was great, used slides effectively (even though slides were pretty kow effort) was using self hosted matrix before was looking to switch friends to xmpp
Thank you for watching my video! A note on the slides: they are lazy on purpose, I am trying to follow the "Takahashi Method" using the Suckless program, "sent": tools.suckless.org/sent/
Love that you're introducing new people to XMPP and the issues with the messaging apps they probably use. Save the world one person at a time 💪 Sad we're all watching it on youtube though 😂
Hi Denshi, Your Videos will be being more reach a lot of viewers when you make your video by presenting yourself in front of your camera like this video. Because your face, your behavior, your dress-up, your voice and your accent these all things make present yourself wonderful personalities person. As a result people will like to see your videos. Love from Bangladesh 💝💝💝🇧🇩
Dang, this is a really neat presentation Denshi. Funnily enough, I set up an XMPP server a while ago and this video has inspired me to set up a new server (and potentially getting my family to use it over WhatsApp or Telegram).
Thank you very much for sharing this! I very much like the way you presented it. It can be very intimidating to start using XMPP libre instant message apps, even the name sounds that is difficult/computer people oriented, as you well said. This is very informative and useful, as always.
Really nice presentation Denshi !! I would love to see you do more presentations like this one, where you talk about a subject and explain it with your words. You have a really good way of expressing yourself ! ps : I am French, and you're french isn't all that bad ;)
Great presentation, 2 questions 1. Other than being a centralized service and the problems you listed that come with that, are there any other issues specifically with signal? Ive noticed Whatsapp leaking metadata for non-net-neutrality purposes, but nobody says bad things about signal 2. If you're like, me and the vast majority of your friends aren't technical and/or don't care about security or open messaging, etc. What's the big selling point? How do you get them convert? A very technical friend of mine became obsessed with xmpp when google started using it, but couldnt get anyone to use a non-google server, because it was easy and tied to their Gmail ...and then the closed the garden
hi bro! Thank you very much for presentation but not enough. Please make a series about xmpp within details and examples. Or advice me a course to learn more info and make practice about xmpp ejabberd server. keep going mann!
So XMPP is great and all, but how do we get people to adopt it? Many people probably don't care and want to continue to use what they are using know. The initial switch to XMPP based messaging requires you to decide not just what new app to use, but also what server you want to use for you account. And when you did that you still have to convince everybody you want to message to also use XMPP and I'm sure a lot of people will not care and find it rather annoying that they should use this one special app to write with this one friend. You need a big enough user base in order to gain mass adoption and there are probably not enough people who care to reach this limit. A few years back WhatsApp changes some terms, which pissed a lot of people off. So almost everybody i knew created a signal account. But now the last message i received on signal is over 2 years old.
Most of my friends are rather privacy conscious so it's not too much of an issue most of the time. They recognize it as the superior technology and switch over.
I just wanna stop the video at min 5:30 to point out that Alex is an excellent presentator. I already wished I had 10% of Alex's presentation kills.
Wonderful explanation of XMPP, thank you infinitely 😊
I love that you list the tools that you used to build your presentation.

Can you create temporary xmpp accounts on a server like IRC?
On your server - yes, on public instances you can simply create another account.
>like IRC
