    Awesome setup. Golf cart and deep cycle boat batteries are the best to use when needing higher capacity of power and cheaper. I used to be a generator technical and have blown peoples minds by showing them how to double voltage with batteries. Welding with jumper cables and a battery is a big thing too if you need to weld on the trail or roadside. I'd recommend keeping some welding rod in you trailer or jeep too.

    Would've been nice if u would've striped the trailer to its bare structure and replaced all the metal with either aluminum or fiberglass/carbon, to save weight and optimize mpg ! And I'm a long time sub, even decided to move into my 89 yj and explore my father's land and save ton's of cash! Started in Kali and went to Long island just to test her capacity and reputation, and currently in Florida! Thanks so much for the inspiration Jake, wouldn't have live if it wasn't for you!

    Please put a rubber gusset in that hole where the wire goes from the panels to the generator! it will wear through the insulation and short everything out. Amazon sells them cheapo. Look at monstaliner it can be applied with a roller, no rubber inside. barage of colors take a look I did the outside of my jeep XJ and it looks amazing.

  • @Meditech509
    @Meditech509 6 лет назад +17

    Actually you were way better off with the Blue Tops. The only reason the 6 volt batteries are rated with that storage is because it is using the formula for only drawing six volts. Once linked in series your storage will now be cut by more than half due to the 12 volt draw. At same time high quality gel batteries are designed for charge discharge without forming a charge memory. Realistically the best batteries to use would be 85 amp hr. power wheelchair batts. You would get a true 170amp hrs. at a full twelve volt draw and they would last for yrs. I own a Mobility store and we have mass amounts of people that come in and purchase batts. for their cabins and rv's. Even the golf cart guys come in and upgrade to our batteries for range and performance. The other problem you will have with the golf cart batteries is they are not a shock proof battery. Unless that trailer of yours is running on a smooth trail you will fracture a cell wall and cause a short between cells. In the end, you truly get what you pay for.

    • @xplorinoregon6388
      @xplorinoregon6388 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, because nobody drives a golf cart over bumps. They just have to be secured well. I have used the 6 volt batteries in my RV for 12 years now and I can go off grid for nearly a week if I don't run the furnace all night. Have had no problems with memory but I never discharge them more than 50%. Not sure how much the wheelchair batteries cost but for the price of the golf cart batteries I don't see how you can go wrong.

      he is a little misinformed on how to batteries in series operate. He described the capacity when in parallel but hes wrenching and learning

    • @tinkerjefe
      @tinkerjefe 6 лет назад

      This comment is misleading. 6v batteries are very good to use in this application. The key term when getting batteries for this type of draw is DEEP cycle. Deep cycle batteries are good to use in applications that see lower consistent amp draws >20 Amps. 12v and 6v DEEP cycle batteries have larger plates inside them, spaced out to give a good long discharge. This is unlike 12v starter batteries or 12v batteries rated 'marine', 'dual purpose' or 'rv'. Starter batteries have small plates close together for higher cranking amps, marine/rv batteries are bigger and further space, but still retain decent cranking amps (mainly needed for trolling motors). These 6v batteries are 220 amp hours each. Put them in a series connection for 12 volts and you keep the 220 amps. If you were to keep the batteries as 6 volt, parallel connection, you will double the amperage. Also, GEL isn't anything special, it's just a different form of LEAD-ACID technology. 6v are just as good if not better.

    Excellent addition Jake. I have a similar setup (except 12 volt AGM slaves) in my Jeep. I charge via 3x 100 volt panels on my rooftop tent. The Kodiak is amazingly energy efficient when inverting and charging - much more than a Goal Zero. It’s weight (about 35 lbs) and portability for a 1k system is what tipped the scale for me to make the investment. I wanted to use it as a backup in my home also.
    I’m curious if you are planning to keep the solar always connected. I’ve gotten conflicting guidance from Inergy on if that’s advisable and healthy for longevity for the Kodiak system.

    • @Shakshuka69
      @Shakshuka69 6 лет назад +1

      It's probably not intended for those who could piece together a similar setup on their own. I assume it's geared more towards the less electrical-savvy folk that would rather buy something with a warranty and company behind it than pay for labor and hope for the best.

    • @ryanoddi8490
      @ryanoddi8490 6 лет назад +3

      Right. I have a Goal Zero Yeti 1400 lithium which is similarly priced/capable. I am savvy enough to build my own system, but I chose the package route because I wanted to be able to move the unit between multiple vehicles, house etc. and it also be in a small and well contained box. It is expensive, but for some of us out there, it's worth the cost. If I didn't plan on moving the power center, I'd definitely build my own.

      I'd like to see that. Or how bout 1 at 20% cost with apples to apples compare. I believe these have lithium ion baths, not agm. Also think lithium batts take a charger designed for them but not sure. Time is money, exactly how long are you gonna spend on it. And it's gonna take a lot more time to make it look halfway decent. I do shit like you're saying all the time, so I know it's NEVER as simple as "Just throwin together this or that". Gotta drill how many holes... in the proper spots. Gotta cut n trim n bend n fabricate n massage things. Gotta wire it all up with comparable connections and connectors, fuses n such. And at the end, the box you're so proud of looks like a piece of shit to everybody else but a select few who get (I get it, but I also get why your idea isn't really well thought out, again the time is money thing will keep comin up). You CAN NOT build a comparable product for anywhere near the 20% price you claim, and no matter what your end product is, it will not be anything folks who are interested in this nicely finished, safe product are interested in. People like me would be interested, but not the folks you're telling this to. Basically you're preaching to the wrong crowd. If you decide to do a build, I will most definitely watch it with pleasure (I love that kinda stuff), i do have time on my hands and have interest in a much cheaper, uglier (but I could care less), comparable set up. And fuck the 20%, I would be really interested in what it can actually be done for (dollars for comparable products) and how long to put it together. Even at 30-40%, for folks interested in the savings, that would be significant enough for one to consider doin it themselves.

    Jake....don't concern yourself with what other people say about your hair...it is a shallowness that people have when it comes to "what you look like"...I am not putting them down, just a fact that most people judge another by looks instead of hearts. Yes it is too bad most people are like this but that's what happens when people rely on looks and material things which causes vanity and shallowness. Years ago before I got my own house I rented a house from a guy I never met until after I moved in...one day this scroungy-looking guy pulled-up in my driveway with a beat-up old ford pickup wearing torn and holey pants and his shirt was very dirty like he had been wearing it for two weeks...he got out of his beat-up old truck and told me to not stack my firewood on the porch..I said excuse me? Who the hell are you? He said he was the landlord...of course I moved the firewood...the next day I was telling my neighbor about it and he laughed and said "yea, you would never guess that guy is the owner of 3 of the largest plywood mills plus a lot of land here in Oregon...he's a millionaire and fly's around here in his helicopter all the time...and he is always working and is always seen dirty...and he loves his old pickup".
    So when people judge you for what you wear and how your hair looks etc. just shrug it off and say to yourself "I don;t give a rats-ass what other people think...I am happy, honest and have a good heart".

      He does have one. I think it was on the "2 PEOPLE LIVING IN A JEEP WRANGLER" vlog. Someone had a spare fridge and gifted it to him.

    Couldn't you have saved a lot of weight by just ditching that platform and bolting stuff straight to the floor? Seems like a big expense for a 20% efficiency improvement.

      Yeah, agreed...but his intention is to drop the trailer as a base camp...then use the jeep as the adventure right out in the wild. So he reconfigured all the cargo and got it off the top of his jeep for those reasons.
