    There has been some discussion as to whether Charles Darwin had Chagas'. I am unqualified to judge the evidence, but my understanding is that it is certainly a possible explanation for the multiple, chronic episodes of illness that he suffered for most of his life.

    I love the jungle background. And the lecture too, of course!

    I too think Chagas should have been Laureated. Unfortunately that didn't happen and now his legacy is disappearing here in Brazil too and young generations won't hear of him as in the past. Thanks for the lecture!

    Thank you! -There are 65 native species of assassin bug in Florida. Some feed on plants, and some on animals. As parasites evolve and adapt, maybe some of those will start carrying t.cruzi. Sure hope not!!! This is basically a “heartworm” for humans. 8 million are infected in Argentina, etc. Terrifying!!! And 300,000 Americans are already diagnosed with Chagas. (Where did they get infected?) And some of their dogs have Chagas, too. 😢

      Our blood banks and organ transplant systems have served as a vectors in their own right.

      They were likely infected here, people tend to bring their diseases when they travel and migrate.

    Lets say a child that is still in diapers was bit, could u be infected by changing the diapers? Also if you carry it, could u pass it sexually?

    These bugs have become aware that any lights around your house, let them know there is a bloodmeal there. Even in the southern united states, here in texas, i find them outside and inside my home frequently. Ive woken up with bites on th edges around my eye, usually beneath the lower lid and off to the outer corner. You don't have to be in a hut to be susceptible. Living in an older house with improperly sealed old doors or windows is more than enough they just walk right in under cracks.

    Such important lectures. We were in the Yucatán ( from Merida to near Guatemala border- early 2020- in hotels ) and got huge bites in swimsuit area - dozen or so, large with necrotic center. Very itchy. Not mosquitoes. Anyone have an idea ? My one knee blew up afterward - large bubble of fluid. Any idea what this might be ? ( biologist here)

    I have a question. What are the similarities between Tryponosoma and plasmodium, please help.

    • @wakingup6382
      @wakingup6382 2 года назад

      I’ll tell you some similarities, but theres a lot more differences that come to mind. They both can infect areas outside of the intestines. Both can go undetected by the immune system.
      Differences: Plasmodium seems easier to kill yet easier to contract. Plasmodium can enter deep into the tissues of the body. Usually they enter the red blood cells and destroy them on accident. Tryponosoma is more likely to enter the lungs and cause breathing difficulties. Plasmodium is easier to test for.
