My fave moment from the film is hearing you guys analyse it.
The film didn't work for me (it dragged, poor music, too lengthy, the reworking of the old songs could've been muchhhh better) but I can appreciate the issues Kjo raised.
The dissection in the chats such as this, is what I'm really loving, though 🙌🏼
Plus to hear Rahul love a film is a joy!!!
      Even if didn't ❤️

I interpreted the post Pujo scene differently. It is one thing to confront your parents(even using the most brutal language ever) and another thing to see them getting confronted by others, even though they might deserve it. Rocky is trying to reconcile all that he has learnt and his disgust for his family’s toxicity with his love and respect for them which he grew up on. That conversation needed to be private between him and Tijori but Rani pushes him to tackle the situation the way she would have tackled it. Hence it’s obvious it escalated because the hardest thing during family confrontation is to battle with the feeling that you are somehow betraying them and it was something that Rocky’s character would have struggled with. To me, that scene was not showing any of them to be right or wrong hut very accurately portraying what would actually happen in such a situation and I connected to it and Rocky’s dilemma hard.

This is so perfectly put! Addressing toxic family is extremely stressful to begin with, and when forced to do so in a way that was not natural to him (direct verbal confrontation, in public to top it off), he reflexively swung back to what he grew up with: "right or wrong, family comes first."
Rocky's reaction was excessive, but Rani set them up for failure by not letting Rocky take the lead on deciding how to best address his family problems, and then interrupting the conversation that she had spurred on in the first place because she was so angry. No one was at their best there.

I love love love that they didn’t forgive and make nice with Dhanlaxmi at the end. Elders dont get to obtain the privilege of forgiveness (when their faults and abuse span decades like that of Dhanlaxmi, I don’t mean for small stuff), just because they are older and will probably die sooner.

I absolutely loved the movie. Laughed throughout.
I have recently discovered that most of the writers were Bengali, which is why the infusion of Bengali and Hindi dialogues worked so well.
I wish they had shown the same love and care to Punjabi dialogues. Again, it felt like the dialogues were written in Hindi and Punjabi words were peppered over them.
As someone whose mother tongue is Punjabi but grew up speaking a lot of Hindi and English due to schooling and upbringing, that is not how an urban Punjabi speaks. Yes there is an infusion of Hindi, but there is a lot more nuance to which words and emotions come out in Punjabi. Dhanlaxmi as the original Punjabi matriarch, should have spoken perfect Punjabi and then the language could be distilled from there to younger generations.
Udta Punjab and Manmarziyan are two excellent examples of Punjabi dialogue writing without losing the audience in translation.

Guys stop glorifying badtameezi. Nobody said she slapped him, not in the movie at least. Everybody accused her of raising hand at his dad which she did. Is Rocky allowed to do it to her parent and get away with it? Rani did get physical with Rocky’s dad. There is no two ways about it. Which is why she apologizes to him and his dad in the end. Why else would she apologize?

The son's change of heart actually kinda made sense to me. He just lost his dad - a person who, even when alive, he was kept apart from. The anger he displayed was a part of his grief for losing his connection with Dharm whilst he was alive.
Death does weird shit to us, henna?
Unless we are Dhanyalakshmi, coz she don't change for shit 😅

Actually even I agree with this. But Dhanlakshmi not forgiving her husband was completely fine with me. Her husband loved another woman and he never took any interest in his own family. That poor woman had to establish the business empire and provide for everyone. Why the hell will she forgive such a man??! But I do acknowledges the fact that Dhanlakshmi was too regressive in her views.

But this is the point Ishita raised in this chat - Dharm wasn't the macho type of husband Jaya would've expected, views again held by patriarchy, which is also where her stoic, bas kehdiya stems from.
She didn't change as a person even at the end, so the loss of her husband had no effect on how she saw family issues.

@@stevechatha4533 Agreed but it's difficult for people like Dhanlakshmi to have a complete 360° change all of a sudden! Firstly she belongs to a completely different generation, secondly imagine her situation (her husband never loved her, she was made to feel like a second citizen by her mother in law, she had to manage everything despite knowing the fact that her husband loved another woman...)! Not saying that all of this justifies her behaviour and her views but all of these things culminated in her becoming the stoic person that she is.

As a Bengali, the Bengali dialogs sounded so a little fake! I wish the Bengali characters (like Soumya) was actually Bengali who would do a better job with the dialogs. Alia did a fabulous job acting, but could not be convincingly Bengali the way Deepika managed in piku! Jaya Bachchan who's actually Bengali, played a Punjabi woman! Though I must say, the Bengali spoken by Shabana Azmi was so on point, it's amazing!

@@seemonjena659 yeah even though thats the case, they do speak in bengali at home, that too quite often. why include that in the movie at all? you only have that sort of a poor bengali accent if you never speak the language. Also, a bengali family that has Tagore hung up on the walls, would be proud of their culture and make sure their children learn it well. its just what happens here, no? I am sad Alia didnt push herself to perfect the accent, being the perfectionist she is. she would have nailed it and it would have been a delight to watch.

Karan Johar kept his style of film making intact so many stereotypes. But yet realizing his earlier films. Some regressive thoughts that were earlier preached now projecting progressive thought process. Karan Johar is known for opulence which is here as well but at the same time showcasing many social taboo. I liked the point where a character says creative/art ka koi gender nahi hota. Then Dola re sequence right before dhindhora. Or rocky saying to rani's family that mujhe yeh aata he nahi my heart went for him and I was in tears. Because I have seen a lot of people like this who come from these flamboyant family they are caged like this. Or dhanlaxmi son telling her ki mard banate banate Insaan Banana bhul gayi. Karan has unapologetically and unabashedly (his fav word) pun intended has made himself a better version of himself with this movie. Though the length could have been better and music as well that you expect from a kjo movie. But overall amazing movie. And alia Bhatt manish Malhotra clothes wow ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Also, the panelists’ windows should be bigger than the film shots. There could be a smaller window somewhere in the corner which shows film posters/scenes while the focus remains on the panelists. The super chat sometimes covers the speaker’s window completely which isn’t a great viewing experience.

Rocky & Rani is an above average movie (sorry Kjo fans- it’s same story line done before) but watch it for Ranveer Singh He is soooooooooooooo ammmazing, gully boy was his best but this too is right up there 🙌🙌🙌🙌one time watch for him ❤️ #ranveersingh
#RockyAurRaniKiiPremKahaani also love the message 💕❤️🥰so much love in the movie- also all actors were in point 🙌
Full disclosure the only movie I ever liked of Kjo is DDLJ after that I even kuch kuch I was not cause I couldn’t relate and too loud for me, I personally love movies of Zoya Akhtar and Ekta Kapoor or so many directors that I can’t name, same for sanjay leela the only movie I loved of him is Black where Amitabh shines so did Rani.
    Ok here is my review
    The best parts of movie
1- Ranveer Singh- he takes the trophy because he could have been over the top but he made it just enough- he shined in every scene
2- dialogues, incredible whoever wrote them was incredible never a cringe moment but just beautiful
3- casting- every actor was born for those roles, did full justice
4-Alia Bhatt- she never looked more beautiful and was perfect for the role but was given limited role which she delivered her best
5- I teared up seeing kathak by both of them
6- messaging ammmmazing that makes it movie with the soul
    What I did not like
    1- few songs looked forced
2- too loud sets for me, can we please show chitra Ranjan park the way it is, why every family needs to be rich in order to be visible
3- storyline has been same progressive versus conservative even though movie addresses few things with class but it did need to be this loud even though it’s KJo
My Bollywood all time fav movies are Gully boy, burfi, Dil Chahata hai, lsad, Queen, Dhoni, Band Baaja, ji jeeta, Hera pheri, Lagan, old movie golmal, tere bin Laden, andaaz apna apna, piku, omg, khosla ka ghonsla, jab we met, andhadhoondh, lage raho, bhaag milkha, tanu weds Manu, Bahubali, Chak De , 3 idiots, Jane bhi do and so many more❤️💕
I am sorry Kjo lovers I know he is fav of many so I apologize in advance🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Making a 100-crore movie is not difficult in India. You just need 2 lac people to buy a Rs500 movie ticket which is not at all difficult in 1.4 billion population especially if a movie is given 2 weekends to stay in theaters. Moreover, there are enough Indians abroad, which adds. It may look huge in monetary terms but actually it indicates a very low cinema footfall.

There were just so many ridiculous and strained concessions made in this discussion to poor little rich AF Karan Johar. I could feel the palpable relief of the 3 critics who are probably exhausted by the capitalistic cynicism of Bollywood and want to be on the side of Big Bollywood for once rather than be the oppositional voice of reason. It’s sometimes easier to submit to the drug of the zeitgeist, never mind that it is a slow poison. Just so disappointed in these 3 and other critics doing mental gymnastics to be in the popular group of the Bollywood “elite”.

Karan Johar is the guy that made ADHM and KANK .
I really wish he addressed different subjects in the movie.

I'm clearly in the minority here. Did not enjoy this movie at all and was really disappointed. It was preachy and boring. And my biggest issue was that Rani and Rocky falling in love was just not convincing right from the beginning.

Why would you do this to this particular film? It doesn't deserve this much attention.

All critics are going gaga over the film but its not doing well at the BO. 58 cr in 5 days is not big for a KJo film with big stars and big budget. And this guy Rahul, total waste - he himself doesnt know what is he talking abt -

It’s wrk day hence theatres are obviously slow.. second reason Oppenheimer & Barbie hype also killed business for this movie. I watched it 3 times.. my husband doesn’t even watch Hindi movies and he watched it twice .. show your ticket if you hve seen it???

Box office collections aren't necessarily indicative of how good a movie is. I'd rather concern myself on how I feel when I watch a piece of art than worry about whether any group or majority love what I appreciate

In reality the Punjabi family would have said a lot of ohoo bangalan kala jadu kar diya hai blah blah and all kinds of stereotypes would have come out - which I learned about when living in Delhi to my shock. Unlike Ishita i was a little annoyed by Alia’s mispronunciations though she clearly tried. Some things were not natural - your thakuma who you live with would be called Thamma at home, and the wine swilling cultural gatherings is overdone even for CR Park - GKII bengalis. Churni Ganguly had the most pretentious rôle unfortunately because she actually had to go to a lingerie shop and say things like your uncle likes this bra and he was struggling with this hook - she’s written as a caricature of mod bengali and the actor humanizes her somehow. Oh yeah the pujo scene horrified me in the promos because of how SLB it looked but thankfully they addressed it a little in the movie. That scene was supposed to annoy Bengalis but excite and please the non-Bengali Bolly audience
