When Dharmendra said - Ghar nahi toda karte, I had goosebumps. Even though the scene before was not so good. But that dialogue compensated for everything. 🥹🥹🥹
My fave moment from the film is hearing you guys analyse it. The film didn't work for me (it dragged, poor music, too lengthy, the reworking of the old songs could've been muchhhh better) but I can appreciate the issues Kjo raised. The dissection in the chats such as this, is what I'm really loving, though 🙌🏼 Plus to hear Rahul love a film is a joy!!! Even if didn't ❤️
I interpreted the post Pujo scene differently. It is one thing to confront your parents(even using the most brutal language ever) and another thing to see them getting confronted by others, even though they might deserve it. Rocky is trying to reconcile all that he has learnt and his disgust for his family’s toxicity with his love and respect for them which he grew up on. That conversation needed to be private between him and Tijori but Rani pushes him to tackle the situation the way she would have tackled it. Hence it’s obvious it escalated because the hardest thing during family confrontation is to battle with the feeling that you are somehow betraying them and it was something that Rocky’s character would have struggled with. To me, that scene was not showing any of them to be right or wrong hut very accurately portraying what would actually happen in such a situation and I connected to it and Rocky’s dilemma hard.
This is so perfectly put! Addressing toxic family is extremely stressful to begin with, and when forced to do so in a way that was not natural to him (direct verbal confrontation, in public to top it off), he reflexively swung back to what he grew up with: "right or wrong, family comes first." Rocky's reaction was excessive, but Rani set them up for failure by not letting Rocky take the lead on deciding how to best address his family problems, and then interrupting the conversation that she had spurred on in the first place because she was so angry. No one was at their best there.
Loved the movie for questioning patriarchy and Ranveer's change in mindset towards being a better man unlike that pathetic misogynist movie tu jhooti main makkar..Jus hated TJMM...This movie is a refreshing change from movies like arjun reddy and tu jhooti main makkar
I love love love that they didn’t forgive and make nice with Dhanlaxmi at the end. Elders dont get to obtain the privilege of forgiveness (when their faults and abuse span decades like that of Dhanlaxmi, I don’t mean for small stuff), just because they are older and will probably die sooner.
I absolutely loved the movie. Laughed throughout. I have recently discovered that most of the writers were Bengali, which is why the infusion of Bengali and Hindi dialogues worked so well. I wish they had shown the same love and care to Punjabi dialogues. Again, it felt like the dialogues were written in Hindi and Punjabi words were peppered over them. As someone whose mother tongue is Punjabi but grew up speaking a lot of Hindi and English due to schooling and upbringing, that is not how an urban Punjabi speaks. Yes there is an infusion of Hindi, but there is a lot more nuance to which words and emotions come out in Punjabi. Dhanlaxmi as the original Punjabi matriarch, should have spoken perfect Punjabi and then the language could be distilled from there to younger generations. Udta Punjab and Manmarziyan are two excellent examples of Punjabi dialogue writing without losing the audience in translation.
None of you felt a little uncomfortable about Dharmendra meeting Shabana on the sly directly cheating on his wife? As horrible as she is, there is not even a thought for trust being so massively betrayed? I’m glad they addressed Shabana’s affair - justification is not necessary but addressing was
Guys stop glorifying badtameezi. Nobody said she slapped him, not in the movie at least. Everybody accused her of raising hand at his dad which she did. Is Rocky allowed to do it to her parent and get away with it? Rani did get physical with Rocky’s dad. There is no two ways about it. Which is why she apologizes to him and his dad in the end. Why else would she apologize?
The son's change of heart actually kinda made sense to me. He just lost his dad - a person who, even when alive, he was kept apart from. The anger he displayed was a part of his grief for losing his connection with Dharm whilst he was alive. Death does weird shit to us, henna? Unless we are Dhanyalakshmi, coz she don't change for shit 😅
Actually even I agree with this. But Dhanlakshmi not forgiving her husband was completely fine with me. Her husband loved another woman and he never took any interest in his own family. That poor woman had to establish the business empire and provide for everyone. Why the hell will she forgive such a man??! But I do acknowledges the fact that Dhanlakshmi was too regressive in her views.
@seemonjena659 But this is the point Ishita raised in this chat - Dharm wasn't the macho type of husband Jaya would've expected, views again held by patriarchy, which is also where her stoic, bas kehdiya stems from. She didn't change as a person even at the end, so the loss of her husband had no effect on how she saw family issues. (I've not had coffee yet, half asleep, so hope I'm making sense) 😴
Same, and i was thinking about how unrealistic that is as it was playing out but didn’t feel it because clearly Aamir Bashir did a great job there. Jaya’s reformation was not possible because Tijori’s was already so drastic
@@stevechatha4533 Agreed but it's difficult for people like Dhanlakshmi to have a complete 360° change all of a sudden! Firstly she belongs to a completely different generation, secondly imagine her situation (her husband never loved her, she was made to feel like a second citizen by her mother in law, she had to manage everything despite knowing the fact that her husband loved another woman...)! Not saying that all of this justifies her behaviour and her views but all of these things culminated in her becoming the stoic person that she is.
As a Bengali, the Bengali dialogs sounded so a little fake! I wish the Bengali characters (like Soumya) was actually Bengali who would do a better job with the dialogs. Alia did a fabulous job acting, but could not be convincingly Bengali the way Deepika managed in piku! Jaya Bachchan who's actually Bengali, played a Punjabi woman! Though I must say, the Bengali spoken by Shabana Azmi was so on point, it's amazing!
Rani, even though she was a Bengali, had been born and brought up in Delhi. Alia has said in the video of making of the movie that she did not wanted her accent to be proper Bengali coz her character had been brought up in Delhi and her character is a Columbia graduate.
@@seemonjena659 yeah even though thats the case, they do speak in bengali at home, that too quite often. why include that in the movie at all? you only have that sort of a poor bengali accent if you never speak the language. Also, a bengali family that has Tagore hung up on the walls, would be proud of their culture and make sure their children learn it well. its just what happens here, no? I am sad Alia didnt push herself to perfect the accent, being the perfectionist she is. she would have nailed it and it would have been a delight to watch.
Karan Johar kept his style of film making intact so many stereotypes. But yet realizing his earlier films. Some regressive thoughts that were earlier preached now projecting progressive thought process. Karan Johar is known for opulence which is here as well but at the same time showcasing many social taboo. I liked the point where a character says creative/art ka koi gender nahi hota. Karan has unapologetically and unabashedly (his fav word) pun intended has made himself a better version of himself with this movie. Though the length could have been better and music as well that you expect from a kjo movie. But overall amazing movie. And alia Bhatt manish Malhotra clothes wow ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I also thought Alia would take a backseat to Ranvir’s loud role but she probably knew she would be in good hands with Kjo because actually i was marveling at how she lights up the screen even in those parts where she was just reacting. Never appreciated Alia this much in a movie just for being there and laughing affectionately at Rocky
Please ask Karan Johar to release uncut version of the movie with all the scenes. There are so many scenes that are missing from the movie, that are part of songs or even the trailer.
I don’t know which world you guys come from but no one is allowed to physically handle my parents which Rani did. Would Rani do that to her own dad or mom? If Rocky didn’t stand up for her dad, I would’ve lost respect for him.
Ranveer shot for this movie during the pandemic, much before he had the down phase. You guys are pathetic for attributing his nuanced acting to him being humbled by his flops. Like as if he was a bad actor before that.
I don't understand the didn't raise her hand part. She was aggressive in that scene. So even if she didn't technically raise her hand....the aggression cannot be discounted (which is what the other characters reactions were to her).
Love all of your content. One feedback on these long reviews though - the constant back and forth of the screens is quite distracting. Also, the panelists’ windows should be bigger than the film shots. There could be a smaller window somewhere in the corner which shows film posters/scenes while the focus remains on the panelists. The super chat sometimes covers the speaker’s window completely which isn’t a great viewing experience.
The subtitles were epic here as well... I was laughing throughout the movie. Ek to jokes upar se Ranveer ka accent n usi ke according subtitles. Hatsoff to the guy

Ranveer's mom and sisters arc was not great ... I felt the bengali household conflicts and track was much better.. rocku and chaterjees Chemistry was fire...
Agreed. Chandon Chatterjee was the best character after Rocky and the Chatterjees had a lived-in comfort whereas Ranvir’s mother changed too quickly. In life those women defend their husband at all cost
Making a 100-crore movie is not difficult in India. You just need 2 lac people to buy a Rs500 movie ticket which is not at all difficult in 1.4 billion population especially if a movie is given 2 weekends to stay in theaters. Moreover, there are enough Indians abroad, which adds. It may look huge in monetary terms but actually it indicates a very low cinema footfall.

Wow I wonder how much worse our films will get now that this film is being considered great. Hurray for lowering the bar even further! There were just so many ridiculous and strained concessions made in this discussion to poor little rich AF Karan Johar. I could feel the palpable relief of the 3 critics who are probably exhausted by the capitalistic cynicism of Bollywood and want to be on the side of Big Bollywood for once rather than be the oppositional voice of reason. It’s sometimes easier to submit to the drug of the zeitgeist, never mind that it is a slow poison. Just so disappointed in these 3 and other critics doing mental gymnastics to be in the popular group of the Bollywood “elite”.
Movie was a lot of fun ✔️ most importantly it was fresh, we know all of this - harmfulness of masculinity and patriarchy affecting us all in general. But the best part is all of it is fun and new and thus entertaining
I dont know if you people bother to not talk about but i like the scene where Dharmendra flirts with Sheeba in the award ceremony...i can see she is liking that "The Dharamji "flirting with her and she got that chance like Kareena grabbed the chance to kiss "The Silvester Stallone"Kambakht Ishq 😄 I find that scene cute ❤️
Watching this again after seeing the movie.. I think y’all were a bit too impressed 😅 but I get it for a Kjo movie this one atleast has the right messaging.. the whole Dharmendra and Shabana affair was a bit too cringe after a point..
I feel KJ has changed with me I liked his previous movies but now I think they are Cringe. Maybe in 10 years I would not like this. But I still like Zoya way of story telling in Dil dadakne do than this
The subjects talked about it in this film such as patriarchy , effeminacy etc has already been spoken about it in so many mainstream Bollywood movies such as TJMM, dil dhadakne do , to name a few. Karan Johar is the guy that made ADHM and KANK . I really wish he addressed different subjects in the movie. This movie felt like a long lecture which i have attended and given exams too( I have had the exact same discussions with the elders of my family). There’s nothing new in the movie. But karan johar’s style of making is intact and i love that part. I really wish he picked a different storyline altogether. I guess , i might be one of the only people disappointed with this movie 😅
I guess I am in the minority… while I think the movie has its moments but song after song and just dance after dance was a bit tiring for me… but glad people are going to the theatres… overall the film could have been shorter
As I was watching the movie today in the theatres after reading such glorious reviews from all critics, I started wondering maybe if Kangana is actually right about the dharma mafia! 🤷♂️
@@TheShounak she's definitely right. But this film is little above average so I wouldn't doubt all the good reviews because we have a habit of celebrating something even if that's marginally better than they expected.
@@SMon-wh6om i know, after being fed shit all the time, as an audience we have come to celebrate mediocrity! But I expected better from the critics. Sadly, we deserve such critics as well! 🤷♂️
@@TheShounak I feel Anmol Jamwal (tried & refused productions) is the best of the lot. He has consistently reviewed films brilliantly and not with an agenda or a supposed agenda that we have grown to sense now. I follow his reviews religiously since 5 years now.
@@TheShounak So you are basically saying that the many people (belonging to the general public) who are saying that the movie is good are all fools?!! Wow.
Very nice .. how is this a nice movie? I agree aninal is not, but on the same moral compass how is this . Just becaise it favours female protagonist in whatever she does.. its like a wow! Bike hue saste critics ..
I'm clearly in the minority here. Did not enjoy this movie at all and was really disappointed. It was preachy and boring. And my biggest issue was that Rani and Rocky falling in love was just not convincing right from the beginning.
All critics are going gaga over the film but its not doing well at the BO. 58 cr in 5 days is not big for a KJo film with big stars and big budget. And this guy Rahul, total waste - he himself doesnt know what is he talking abt -
It’s wrk day hence theatres are obviously slow.. second reason Oppenheimer & Barbie hype also killed business for this movie. I watched it 3 times.. my husband doesn’t even watch Hindi movies and he watched it twice .. show your ticket if you hve seen it???
Box office collections aren't necessarily indicative of how good a movie is. I'd rather concern myself on how I feel when I watch a piece of art than worry about whether any group or majority love what I appreciate
In reality the Punjabi family would have said a lot of ohoo bangalan kala jadu kar diya hai blah blah and all kinds of stereotypes would have come out - which I learned about when living in Delhi to my shock. Unlike Ishita i was a little annoyed by Alia’s mispronunciations though she clearly tried. Some things were not natural - your thakuma who you live with would be called Thamma at home, and the wine swilling cultural gatherings is overdone even for CR Park - GKII bengalis. Churni Ganguly had the most pretentious rôle unfortunately because she actually had to go to a lingerie shop and say things like your uncle likes this bra and he was struggling with this hook - she’s written as a caricature of mod bengali and the actor humanizes her somehow. Oh yeah the pujo scene horrified me in the promos because of how SLB it looked but thankfully they addressed it a little in the movie. That scene was supposed to annoy Bengalis but excite and please the non-Bengali Bolly audience
not a K Jo fan..the movies are bad....now that you guys telling this is a good movie...so will watch it.....I dont know why are we so obsessed with Poo..its a copy of all the high school movies in Hollywoord....mean girls....Clueless...Gossip Girl...I dont get the obsession.

Ok here is my review
The best parts of movie
1- Ranveer Singh- he takes the trophy because he could have been over the top but he made it just enough- he shined in every scene
2- dialogues, incredible whoever wrote them was incredible never a cringe moment but just beautiful
3- casting- every actor was born for those roles, did full justice

5- I teared up seeing kathak by both of them
6- messaging ammmmazing that makes it movie with the soul
What I did not like
1- few songs looked forced
2- too loud sets for me, can we please show chitra Ranjan park the way it is, why every family needs to be rich in order to be visible
3- storyline has been same progressive versus conservative even though movie addresses few things with class but it did need to be this loud even though it’s KJo
My Bollywood all time fav movies are Gully boy, burfi, Dil Chahata hai, lsad, Queen, Dhoni, Band Baaja, ji jeeta, Hera pheri, Lagan, old movie golmal, tere bin Laden, andaaz apna apna, piku, omg, khosla ka ghonsla, jab we met, andhadhoondh, lage raho, bhaag milkha, tanu weds Manu, Bahubali, Chak De , 3 idiots, Jane bhi do and so many more❤️💕
I am sorry Kjo lovers I know he is fav of many so I apologize in advance🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Congrats on 90,000 subscribers Sucharita-ji
Thank you for this LONG REVIEW
I got very surprised by the highly positive reviews 😂
Same i thought fake hai saare . I went and watched it and it was actually good. It was dragged in the second half but much better than expected
@@arulmittal9161 same happened with Chalchitra Talks, the people who never talked or raved about Bollywood movies are raving Rocky and Rani. I mean, c'mon...
They got few bucks now shouting for hours😂😂
I had high expectations after watching such rave reviews. The best thing anout the movie is Ranveer Singh...he is soo good... I feel yet again karan johar has only touched upon surface level.
That will be 10 cr bro not 100 cr
@@the9pmshow haha.. my bad.. thanks for correcting .. 20 lac bhi zada bada number nahi hai in 1.4 billion population + outside India Indians population
Is Rahul desai on notice period inFilm companion 😮😅
aaj mummy ke saath movie dekha bengaluru mai!! My only problem was that 2-3 kissing scenes the!! im being very honest!! But trust me both i and my mumloved the movie!! It wasnt preachy and it was entertaining aur msg bhi saath mai msg kiya!!

The least can you do is get a good internet connection yar btw love you guys
Very well explained Ishita! 👍🏻👌🏻
Is the fact that the grandmother did not accept the relationship bothering people? It feels like something was amiss at the end. No closure!
Movie was a lot of fun ✔️ most importantly it was fresh, we know all of this - harmfulness of masculinity and patriarchy affecting us all in general. But the best part is all of it is fun and new and thus entertaining
I dont know if you people bother to not talk about but i like the scene where Dharmendra flirts with Sheeba in the award ceremony...i can see she is liking that "The Dharamji "flirting with her and she got that chance like Kareena grabbed the chance to kiss "The Silvester Stallone"Kambakht Ishq 😄
I find that scene cute ❤️
Love these reviews, please use a stable Internet connection
Watching this again after seeing the movie.. I think y’all were a bit too impressed 😅 but I get it for a Kjo movie this one atleast has the right messaging.. the whole Dharmendra and Shabana affair was a bit too cringe after a point..
can they get better internet connection please??? in the age of broadbands...why such lag in videos
I feel KJ has changed with me I liked his previous movies but now I think they are Cringe. Maybe in 10 years I would not like this. But I still like Zoya way of story telling in Dil dadakne do than this
I love both
The subjects talked about it in this film such as patriarchy , effeminacy etc has already been spoken about it in so many mainstream Bollywood movies such as TJMM, dil dhadakne do , to name a few.
Good movie
Wow.
How delusional these folks are. Hyping it as if it's killing it at the box office.. Bloodly jokes in the name of film criticism.
All paid critics biased and prejudiced...promoting and glorifying one of the most pathetic filmmakers.
Very nice .. how is this a nice movie? I agree aninal is not, but on the same moral compass how is this . Just becaise it favours female protagonist in whatever she does.. its like a wow! Bike hue saste critics ..
Very very nice movie💯
😊
I'm clearly in the minority here. Did not enjoy this movie at all and was really disappointed. It was preachy and boring. And my biggest issue was that Rani and Rocky falling in love was just not convincing right from the beginning.
paresh rawal 10 cr 😮😮😮😮
Why would you do this to this particular film? It doesn't deserve this much attention.
Yeah but she is Indian.
Not good movie ..over acting of ranbeer n alia ..No story ..waste of money ..pls dont watch
Show your ticket if you watched it?? Don’t listen losers like this fake troller here 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😊
Nowadays it's so difficult to distinguish between a hater and a critic. What are you, pray?

What a movie. It deserves an Oscar. Hope this movie is the official entry to the oscars this year.
