I love that this series is both an entertaining spiral into insanity as things go more and more off the rails _and_ a genuinely interesting exploration of the real world history of popular franchises. The PS1 wasn’t more powerful then the N64, but the CD-ROM was a game changer. It allowed for the storage of more higher quality textures and FMVs. It also had a better sound chip to take advantage of CD format. However, the N64 trounced it in terms of polygon counts, game physics and environment sizes due to having a CPU that ran at 3 times the clock speed and double the RAM (quadruple if you included the expansion card). It was a different philosophy, but it was also harder to program for which made the switch to PS1 easier to swallow for many devs.
I didn't want to post an 'um, actually' comment myself, so I'm here to boost this one. Yeah, the N64 had a not-insignificant advantage over the PS1 in terms of 3D graphics horsepower.
I'm so here for another interesting series at polygon - Overboard has been the only thing keeping me around for the last year or so. Although, I can't help but want to see a little more of Pat's chaotic energy let loose in the next one. Every verse is actually Dragonverse in Japan. I means you expect three geniuses at game design(Horii), art direction(Toriyama) and composer(Sugiyama). To create unsuccessful product in their own turf?
The N64 was more powerful in terms of polygon production, not less, than the PSX. The Playstation had a better sound chip, significantly more cheap storage space available via CD media and video encoding. FFVII, one of my favorite games, does not look like Paper Mario on N64--It looks like Banjo-Kazooie. Square brings the methodology employed by Resident Evil II's release years later, less successfully since compression technology would be more embryonic, increasing the RAM Cart's unit price for the end user. This saps confidence and lowers the marketing budget. Luckily--The game is still the first JRPG to sell a million units in the West... Why? Time and place. At date of release, all N64 titles had an amazing attach rate--Something the video neglects. Final Fantasy IV (Probably correct) is a huge hit by current Square standards but a NOT system moving phenomenon. This hurts Dragon Quest, not assists it. JRPGs take a slower pace catching on in the West and Enix continues to consider North America a distant priority market. Square trudges right along but never makes Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within, avoiding the huge hit to its coffers. From there, you are past alternate history and into complete speculation. Square probably never makes the Disney deal but market conditions are probably even worse for Enix so it is likely the merger still happens, though an aquisition by a larger company is very possible. JRPGs eventually become a hit in the West but the needle mover is anyone's guess, as FFVII spawned so many imitators of various quality that entire series would likely never have been founded. The PSX, without one of its most famous system sellers, faces a stiffer uphill battle against the Saturn and much moreso against the N64, changing the industry's pattern for years to come. Square's move to the Playstation is one of the seminal moments in the industry and the then-dominant print media knew it, even at the time. But no matter how it might have been different... it doesn't turn out like this video thinks.
I have never played any of these games, but Polygon alternate reality thought experiments are _so good_ I was really interested despite that! So excited that this is becoming a series - congrats to the vid team.
This is cool as hell. I love the combination of learning about the history of Final Fantasy and how it shaped gaming alongside alternate universe memes and bonkers Sonic content.

This was amazing. Both FF and DQ1 shaped my childhood and my love of all RPGs, J or otherwise. When you said "DQ11 most recent since 2017" I was confused, but then I realized they announced DQ12 a week after you posted this lol.
A... a running series from Polygon since Brian left? YES! YES! PUT IT IN MY VEEEEEEEEEEINS! Also, for an episode idea? If any of the Halo-killers actually killed Halo. Take your pick. I think Haze would be the funniest example.
I would love to hear about an alternate history surrounding Chrono Trigger and its sequel Chrono Cross. They never got their third instalment in the form of Chrono Break, in part due to Final Fantasy's success. It could have unleashed a serious craze for multiple timelines.
@@Avendesora i think it relates. The title is misleading, as if DQ doesn’t sell. As if DQ isn’t a lucrative franchise. It is, but more so in Japan. The initial sales numbers for the most recent entries confirms DQ XI outsold FF XV. The title makes it sound like DQ is a dead franchise when its clearly not. All I’m saying is the title should just say “in the West” because it seems disingenuous. Also, there’s really nothing to get angry about here. Idk whats up with your last comment, but we’re just two people talking about games we both like. Final Fantasy is chill.
@@Avendesora the word “beat” insinuates one is defeated. So, thats probably where my issue comes from. Sorry I mistook your confusion with me for anger. Emotions can be hard to read over text.
i’ve played a half dozen dragon quests, but i couldnt get more than 5 minutes into final fantasy. im already living the dragonverse babey. just wish i could be in the universe where theres a remake of dq9 😢
kinda disappointed by this video. i was so excited for a new polygon series, and i still will be, but i was hoping for a bit more love for the franchise this video was ostensibly about? it ended up just feeling like how ff loses rather than dq wins with a moral tacked on about different values in gaming rather than investing in exploring those in a franchise that might not be as popular. that hurts a bit
It was CD having higher storage capacity rather than power wivh made Square turn FFVII from N64 to PS1. N64 was actually more powerful by quite a margin.
For one thing a LOT more people would read Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai Manga and watch both anime adaptions. Giving it the proper respect it deserves. Instead of it being criminally slept on in our universe.
I think the problem with the senario is forgetting the N64 Disc Drive. It could have been a success if a major title was released on it. Though it would delay production, so FF9 and FF10 would been exclusive to GameCube with FF9 being a likely launch title.

ERROR IN VIDEO: Without the CGI experience from FF7 on the PS1, Square would not be able to create a theatrical movie. They would continue to be a financially healthy company making RPGs for Nintendo 64. The gamecube in 2001 would finally allow them to add full 3D and cinematics to the Final Fantasy lineup. FF10 would be a huge success. The original creators would still be at Square.
And the alternate timeline would evolve pretty much same as now, with FF 10, 11, 12, etc looking similar to the current versions (except on Gamecube, Wii, and so on)
.
So the answer to “what if dragon quest beat final fantasy” turns out to ultimately be “it can’t.”
"Sega's deep pockets" is a Natalie Portman in Garden State 'something that no one's ever said or done before' move
i'm glad this is getting a series! can't wait to see more!
Pat: "Now, how can I get wrestling into this pitch..."
This was amazing. Both FF and DQ1 shaped my childhood and my love of all RPGs, J or otherwise. When you said "DQ11 most recent since 2017" I was confused, but then I realized they announced DQ12 a week after you posted this lol.
i like the line "but why imagine when you have a playstation?"
This video has even stronger Jon Bois vibes than normal Polygon content
Is the dimension this is from the fumble dimension?
A... a running series from Polygon since Brian left? YES! YES! PUT IT IN MY VEEEEEEEEEEINS!
Also, for an episode idea? If any of the Halo-killers actually killed Halo. Take your pick. I think Haze would be the funniest example.
Patrick this video was spectacular, great work dude
I would love to hear about an alternate history surrounding Chrono Trigger and its sequel Chrono Cross. They never got their third instalment in the form of Chrono Break, in part due to Final Fantasy's success. It could have unleashed a serious craze for multiple timelines.
Maybe add the caveat “in the west” because DQ still sells like crazy in Japan
@@Avendesora yeah, and I think by not saying it up front is a kind of click bait. Its fine he says it eventually. Earlier would be better though.
Big fan of this alternate history stuff. Keep it up!
I would actually absolutely love it if Barret randomly said things like "lucky duck" in the middle of his usual rants
YESSSS MY DRAGON QUEST NICHE HAS BEEN FIT, I FEEL CATERED TO
I think I found my new favourite Polygon series
We are hard at work on more!
i’ve played a half dozen dragon quests, but i couldnt get more than 5 minutes into final fantasy. im already living the dragonverse babey. just wish i could be in the universe where theres a remake of dq9 😢
kinda disappointed by this video. i was so excited for a new polygon series, and i still will be, but i was hoping for a bit more love for the franchise this video was ostensibly about? it ended up just feeling like how ff loses rather than dq wins with a moral tacked on about different values in gaming rather than investing in exploring those in a franchise that might not be as popular. that hurts a bit
17:00 “It finds moderate success as a free-to-play gacha loot shooter”
This kills me. Because I know I would play that game.
Damn, this started out as a fuckin fever dream and ended up being truly insightful
The brilliance of those Alternate History articles. is just *chefs kiss*
Glad you guys had the short, I missed the notification.
Heck yeah... vindicated
my therapist: warner bros kingdom hearts isn't real, it can't hurt you
pat:
You might Wanna Change It To Hanna Barbera
Well I just got emotional over a sonic the hedgehog edit plopped on top of a Rohirim hill.
Thanks polygon, You're all great.
"There's no forum on what Final Fantasy is, or what it should be"
So what you're saying is...it's the same as our universe but without the hype.
I think the problem with the senario is forgetting the N64 Disc Drive. It could have been a success if a major title was released on it.
Though it would delay production, so FF9 and FF10 would been exclusive to GameCube with FF9 being a likely launch title.
This is an incredibly cool series. I love that you’re doing this.
