And as a contrast to this, I sit behind my 1000+ dollar drum kit.. The best I can do sounds like a two year old hitting buckets and pans with a wooden spoon.
I'm a guitar player, I just have drums to mess around every once in a while and so I can jam without people having to bring their own kits...
But before this drum kit I had one that I bought for like 50 bucks off someone, sounded like absolute garbage. The cymbals sounded like garbage can lids, literally. The snare sounded like... You'd rather have the snare on St. Anger any day of the week. It was awful. I was much younger at this time and was considering actually trying to learn. I could not for the life of me play anything that sounded even close to what you'd call good, unless it was keeping a beat for another instrument, or a song. I thought it was the kit for sure. It was a cheap POS, of course it's the kit..... Then a buddy came over, who's a drummer, and started jamming on it...
That's when it really hit home for me that if you're good at an instrument you can make just about anything that resembles said instrument sound good. Practice, not gear, is what makes you a better player. If you're not playing how you want to be, buying new gear isn't going to change that and make you sound like a professional. Lots of people think this is true and are very disappointed when they've spent a whole paycheck, just to sound like the same infant beating on, strumming, attempting to play their instrument. Albeit a much more expensive instrument.

Though I have no doubt if someone practiced the buckets as long as this guy likely practiced on a real drum kit, they'd be pretty damn good at playing the buckets would they not?
@@danielnelson4881 I found this not to be true. Having equipment that works, stays in tune, and is enjoyable to play is a major advantage. Having better equipment does help.

Before many many years i lived on the streets for a few years..I knew a dude who played on the streets.. He made amazing money.. On a good day sometimes around 800 - 900 when he played the whole day..

How fast he draws a crowd! It’s a short show but he showcases his technical ability and speed but the way he captivates the crowd is most impressive. A true performer!
Thank you for this. I just learned about bucket drumming last month when I was subbing a number of days in a middle school special ed classroom. This is the first band teacher who ever brought the special ed classes in, and it took a lot of doing to get it going. Hardly any of the students have the ability to manipulate keys or strings, let alone blow wind instruments, but he figured everyone can drum. So he went to Home Depot and they donated 60 buckets. He bought the drumsticks from band class funds. And it actually sounds pretty good when those kids drum in unison! I was getting paid to listen to a performance. Granted, they're not as advanced as this guy -- he's very entertaining. I'll have to tell the regular classroom teacher about this video so she can show it to her students as inspiration to keep playing!

For the comments about him being "pushy for the money": This guy busts his butt… They don't exactly throw money around on the streets of Vegas. He employs a number of honest and good-natured techniques, all of which are only designed to ensure that he gets his just remuneration for the entertainment he provides. This guy is a genius on the drums, and charismatic with his solicitation. I don't think many of us have ever had to work on the streets in order to survive. So just like this, share it, and please try and get the "bucket boy" (a.k.a. Mathew Pretty) the recognition he so deserves.

I've seen multiple street performers and in all honesty, their jokes are all the same: references to how much money then need and why they are still working on the street. They also love to bring kids in to the mix and applaud the kids for helping them out.

Pretty annoying behavior imo tho... If you choose to play on the streets, you want to draw people to your talent and share that. But with this mentality you silently say "if you aren't gonna pay you shouldn't stay" and, I don't know.. It just throws me off so greatly!...

@@1Pineapple because hints etc. Don't work. Being persistent and making it a joke is highly effective.
1. He actually wanted to get some of the tippers involved, but barely any people came forward at the right time.
2. It's a numbers game. You're never going to get 100% of people to tip. Because not everyone tips. But the more you ask the more people remember hey this is allowing the man to do stuff with his life.
3. People still standing there are there to watch the show. Cool. He is there hoping some of them will throw him some money. It's a mutual deal.
4. He does make it clear that if people don't have money it's okay. But if everyone gave just a little bit, it would be more than enough.
5. People don't realize how simple it is to just give someone a couple of bucks. Someone practiced their skill for hours, and came over to a convenient spot for you, and doesn't ask you specifically for money over and over. He's asking a crowd. When people leave and go and may or may not have heard him ask for tips enough time for them to actually head him and consider it. If he can do so, while practicing an art, and making fun of it as a showman, then by all means he should.
6. You may have a problem with him asking several times. But most people sit there for several minutes watching him, and don't give anything. Several straight up record it and share it with hundreds of friends. And what? He only realistically expects a couple of bucks. I never sit there watching a performer and not tip. Lots of people do. Him being pushy is effective. Sorry not sorry.
7. Would you sit there for longer and longer to see if people will tip? Or if asking throughout your performance in a style that works that increases what the audience tips in time window similar to when you don't ask be something you're just too good to do? Too bad, because facts are you'd get less

I remember that some years ago YT was pushing a video titled" BEST DRUMMER EVER!!!" and it was this bucket drummer that was ABSOLUTELY BORING. It was like listening to a metronome and he did nothing that I couldn't do with some solo cups in middle school. I've seen a troupe of elementary school kids in Washington DC doing slower African rhythms on buckets way better that that RUclips video.
Far forward to today... THIS video with polyrhythms and matching drum tricks etc... WAY BETTER. Holy smokes. Thanks for sharing this!!
