This arc is incredible. Sound effects got a major upgrade. Like whenever anyone swings their sword it sounds intense like you could hear the force and weight of an attack. And the drama is intense. Best season of SAO. Even orbital scale is really good if you haven’t seen it.

Um- it's not a game, but rather a virtual world; Underworld. It is made with the purpose of creating AIs, or as Rath calls it; ALICEs who can be used for military purposes. The project is named "Project Alicization". But because of Quinella creating the Taboo Index which forbids people from doing things, including killing, the project is already at stake. Alice, the blonde girl with the golden armor, is the first person who deviated from the system (thanks to Kirito's "influence") and was the first to break the Taboo Index without triggering the Seal of the Right Eye, which would hurt everytime you try to break the law OR even think of breaking the law. But before Rath could get their hands on Alice, the Axiom Church which Quinella founded took her away. Fast forward to this, (Alicization: War of Underworld Arc, the arc after Alicization) the place the Rath company works got invaded by people (Americans, precisely) who also want to take Alice and use her for their military. The invasion happened during the final battle with Quinella which ended in a *tragedy*. And as you mentioned, Kirito was one of the people mentally fucked up. Losing his best friend was the final straw before he snapped. (Alice too, she has been suffering an existential crisis since but Kirito is just way more screwed) I won't spoil what happened to Kirito, or more about the arc but let's just say his plot armor is on a "leave" so Alice takes the spotlight for the first half of this arc. Kirito is the only person really trapped in the world because of his condition before his second log-in and after the final battle. Asuna and the others got in UW through Rath's help. All of the residents in UW were raised in that world, so I don't think I would call them "trapped" by that context?
