- In this jazz guitar lesson we check out The Real Book and The New Real Book and we chat about what they are and why you need to buy one!
* UPDATE: Day after I filmed this I decided to buy The Real Book (Volume 6) just to check it out - and it's typeset, no longer hand written and it looks a gazillion times better than the original Volume 5!! So that would be my recommended buy.

LOL, pulling it out from under the counter like you were buying drugs or something... cracked me up!
Hey kids wanna buy some realbooks?
Hey you got em In e flat
I must be a diamond geezer, because I stayed until the end! It was worth it, as always :-)
What happens at the end? Beautiful naked women appear to take us away?
Personally I think these video are brilliant. I'm 35, I've been playing for 20 years and only in recent months have I seriously started to learn and develop my jazz playing. There's a lot of theory that I'd forgotten that these videos have reminded me of. Great stuff!
Fake Books: Tab Sites From Before the Internet.
2:50 We might say that the guitar is a transposing instrument also. Its notes sound an octave lower than written to avoid needing the bass clef. e.g. Written middle C is played on the A string
oh man you were hilarious this video!! btw I've been watching a lot of your videos, and i would like to say that i REALLY appreciate how well you organized your channel, your website looks like you put your heart and soul into it, your work is VERY much appreciated
Your Jazz lessons are where you really shine. Keep it up. Don't be afraid to get into more advanced concepts too. Beginner lessons are a dime a dozen, but you have a lot of knowledge. Don't under estimate the skills of your subscribers. :)
your sense of humor is subtle yet so effective and relatable.
This is probably my favourite set of lessons you've done so far, Justin.
I have a really good feeling about this series of lessons! :D
So excited for jazz. Thanks Justin!!
Thanks for sharing all this information with us!
A great help Justin thanks.
Don't worry Justin, us Sax players know what we're doing..... ;) Soprano & Tenor = Bb. Alto & Baritone = Eb
Ha ha!! I looked it up as well, I should have known that. :)
+YaniT991 Lol, so do us trombonist and trumpet players ;-) Bb
thank you very much for your great lessons!
Thanks, brother, for making these videos.
Jazz seems daunting. But I'm slowly learning. These video's are really helpful, Thanks Justin!
Well, this serie of jazz lessons is being very instructive to me, thanks a lot, Justin.
I wonder if you gonna show these pages with your harmonic analyses, it would be very nice.
Thanks, Justin, and keep up the wonderful work.
PS: And as someone below wrote: "This is probably my favourite set of lessons you've done so far, Justin."
Keep these lessons up!
I love your guitars ma, great vid. Finally getting into Jazz comp. listening to Getz/Gilberto
Excellent discussion.
thanks so much for sharing
Hi Justine, i bot the real book sixth edition from amazon about three months from now and i thank you so much!!!! i really improved and i feel much more confident playing jazz in front of people, you really helped me!!!
TD Hack interesting points ,if anyone else wants to discover how to learn to play guitar for dummies try *Barkola Guitar Player Blueprint* (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my co-worker got cool success with it.
cool. I learned something today.
Good point about the key. I bought one in the key of C. Later on I bought another one but didn't notice that it was in the Key of Eb, but I still use it. Also, like you, I print out only the tunes I want to play.
Ok is this a drinking game? Everytime he says "real book" everyone drinks.
You're so goofy in this one! haha. Looking forward to the jazz standards!
I made the mistake of buying the Bb one from amazon years ago, and giving it to a Sax player. Must get one of those NEW real books in C . Thanks Justin. Like your wool blanket bye the way.
It´s alto sax Justin, alto is transposed to Eb. I've been teaching music to a friend of mine who's starting on the alto and it's been a pain to make him understand his "do" was Eb. Reaaaaally stupid. Totally agree with you. Just use C cleff if anything at all if you need to but if it says C, use C for gods sake!!!
If you have an iPad a fantastic app is iReal pro. It is the Real Book in digital media, but allows you to transpose to a different key, and you may edit the chart if you want to simplify or embellish. It will display chords, and even play a or simplified version of the tune for you. The display looks just like the Real Book. Love it!
You seem like a great guy I love your stories to you should just do a whole segment on the history of the guitar and Pythagoras
Hey Justin! There is a Real book in bass clef too!
I wonder if they have made a C-clef version hahaha!
Thanks for the video!
Ugh fine.....let's talk about it or whatever. Thanks for the video.
Nice video thanks~ By the way, of course don't forget that jazz musicianj pros also use fakebooks if they need to learn a tune they are not familiar with. There are as you know thousands of songs to choose from, but it's also possible for even standards, a seasoned player could in fact have never played a particular tune and then may use the fakebook as a reference, starting point.
Dear Justin, I enjoy ur lessons so much. Specially sitting in a city somewhere where almost nobody plays jazz music, so no one to learn from. Thank you for your teaching. Actually I cant find any lesson about Metheny's Follow me. Can u present one when u have free time? I can play it but i m curious ur professional version. Thank you
Hey Justin. I paid $75 for the 6th Edition of "The Real Book" published by Hal Leonard. As fas as the idea of downloading goes, I think they kind of address the pirating issue by restricting access to their website to people who have a long access key that they find on the inside cover of their book. Once you punch in that key, the website then allows you to download charts and it also has a couple hundred backing tracks that you can listen to or practice over. Not every song has a backing track, but there are quite a few and it's definitely a bonus to be able to get the groove of the tunes that way if you're not really familiar with them. And you're right about the old "Fake Books." My buddy, a well known guitarist here and owner of a shop might have sold them "out of the trunk of his car!" This is of course, just a rumor, but I heard it from a friend...... Anyway, they were terrible, with lots of mistakes, but they were better than nothing. The internet has changed everything.
"got to put my guitar back on" lol
great...
Omg I didn’t know they made baby real books.
"IF i was smart ... id get my self a Real Book" !
haha kinda love it that your book seems pretty used. :)
Just like your 🤣😂🤣's 😂🤣😂
hahaha, so true...I bought my fake book in Palo Alto, Calif, in the mid 80s...I thought I was being subtle yet the guy gesticulated wildly telling me to pipe down...I followed him out to the alley behind the store and yeah, just like a drug deal...
I'm a diamond geezer mate. Still here guvnor
I like the real book pad for kindle on my iPad
You can get a C trumpet but the nature of the sound means it's only really used for classical music. You once could have gotten a C saxophone but it lost popularity after the 1920s. It's advantage is that you could play right off the sheet with a piano player accompanying you from the same sheet.
Well, you got carried away a little bit there :D
Can you make a Video on how to play the chords on the real book?
Super - I loved the historical background :)
complete guitar course book
justin i dont belive you know most of the tunes there a just so many
Sax transpositions? Tenor (and soprano) = Bb; Alto (and Baritone) = Eb.
Since this is a pretty old video, do9 you still recommend getting the 6th edition of the Real Book for C instruments? If you get the CD, you can just print off the songs you like, correct? Do these allow transposition before printing? Thx
Thanks Young Norm MacDonald
are those lesson gonna be free on youtube?
I have a Real Book, but I never know which voicings to use for the chords so often it doesn't sound like the song. Any suggestions on that?
Really the real book is just a framework to learn jazz standards
They may have just minor 7 chords shown bit if the melody does not have any other things you could use minor 11 etc
The dominant chords are where most of the altered notes #5 b9 #9
#11 b13 etc are good alterations to use as long as the melody does not conflict with these alterations
My two cents
But this book is awesome
While guitar is a C instrument, should I play everything up an octave from it's written using the 2nd string 1st fret as your middle c reference since the Real Book isn't written specifically for guitar?
no middle C is normal 5th string .. use C book for guitar
Great video. This is the first video of yours I've seen, and I gave the thumbs up as well as subscribed. There's clearly value here. That being said, I have to air my one criticism, which is that you're against people downloading the book for free online, but you're ok with the fifth edition which was transcribed without copyrights? That fifth edition was just a pirated edition before there was a word for pirating, with artists/arrangers/printers getting "fleeced" as a matter of course, (all in the name of the music being accesible and correct of course).
If the fifth is ok, so has to be pirating, and if pirating isn't cool, then you have to go with the sixth edition for thirty some odd bucks. Either artists MUST be paid, or sharing the music is more importand and it MUST get out. For the record, I have a fifth edition from the old days, and a sixth I grabbed on amazon, so I straddle the fence too, but I also don't take a stand on the ethics.
Great video, keep 'em coming.
I have been playing my guitar for just over 2 years and been looking for genre to stick to, do you think this book would be a great start to get in to Jazz?
It's working for me!
...woow its norm mac donald playing guitar!!
Has anyone seen the 557 Jazz Standards book,...is it any good for learning?
I'm not sure if there is or not (I do not see it on google) but It would be good if there was a real book software to buy with all the songs, where you can click on the chord and it shows the best chord fingering tab to use or possible alternative inversion. Also it would play the standard at at a tempo that you like and could play along with (either the chords or the melody). Is there something like this already?
corey wiley download ireal pro
Thanks for the tip! I've never heard of that before. It looks like a good program.
I hope I can use it on a PC and that I do no need a mobile device. I guess it is only for mac and mobile devices which I do not have, but thanks anyway..I hope they make it available for HP Windows.
What's the name of the book?
Hey Justin! I got me a Real Book 6th ed. when you started your new Jazz series, but I hear they changed much of the content compared to the 5th ed. I see that you're still working with the 5th ed., so it would be great if you made sure that the standards you're gonna teach are in both editions.
I just bought a 6th edition myself, for that very reason :)
*****
Great! Saw your "update"-message only after I wrote this.
hey Justin ! I got a question... those books are with sheets right? but one problem I cant read sheets.. is there any other option or book to learn this kind of things?
+Joël Booi Perservere and remember that this is the language withwhich you wish to communicate with other musicians for the rest of your life. If you decided to move to another country for good you'd learn that language. It'd take time but it's the only way to communicate. If you are only into jazz for a little fling then don't bother. If you're serious, put in the time and effort and try to get as good as you can as quick as you can.
Okaayy okaayy... yeahh thanks !! I understand☺
Joël Booi Get some of the William Leavitt books. Modern Method for Guitar is specifically for teaching sight reading for the guitar. He also has other books for developing sight reading skills and rhythmic awareness.
Like like like.
Funny undressed in front of camera hahaha!!! PS so so so Justin, what's wrong with my Fake Book series? PSS thank you for the tips. Back to the drawing board!
Buying drugs AND public nudity in one lesson!? Justin needs to contain all that edge! ;)
Jokes aside, probably my favourite RUclipsr. Just such an awesome bloke.
P.S. When are you gonna do a collab with Paul Davids man!? That would be bloody awesome.
His voice sounds really manly in this one.
Is it harder to learn Jazz if you don't know much about theory?
Yes.
You can't bluff your way through jazz, the reason jazz players are cliquey and held in high esteem is because they know exactly what they are playing , when, and why
The theory is no different than what you need to play rock although there are many key centers that are used in jazz so learning chord scales or the modal chord structures is paramount and understanding secondary dominant and tritons substitutions etc
Do you mind telling us the tunes you usually play? ;) or recommend some tunes we should know... Thanks!
there are some lists on my website!
breklee has a ton of untalented rich kids (like, 1% rich), and a few talented poor kids
Your reverse snobbery is funny.
Great lessons but how often are you undressed in front of the camera!?? Lol
and this fake book is a really old new real book.
Dude. You talk way too fast and way too much.
