Lately I've seen videos that have been against using the Real Book and/or fake books in general. They have a couple of valid points; one example is that the original Real Book (1st edition) have some of the wrong changes. But personally I used the first edition with a good teacher i studied with way back when I was a teenager. I've since picked up several other fake books including newer editions of the Real Book. I've learned so much by using them in the ways you suggest as well as a few other approaches. Using the Real Book every day for years increased my knowledge in so many positive ways. Been playing and teaching music for over 40 years now and still get a lot of mileage from this and other fake books. Great lesson, and it's great to hear you endorsing its use rather than trashing it as I've witnessed others do lately. Keep up with your excellent lessons here on youtube. There’s some great advice here on using the Realbook. One thing that I think is really vital is to hear some famous versions of the tune you are trying to play. I appreciate you’re working at something different here, reading, shell voicing practice etc. Imagine how easy all those charts would be to play if you’d listened and heard every one of those tunes from an early age: all the rhythms, chord changes and melodies would already be internalised

Dude I feel like I've been waiting for this video. My Real Book got beat to hell in college, then lost when I moved to NY. A few months ago I got lucky and found a mint one for $2 at a thrift store. Looking forward to diving back into it!

Any idea why the chord changes in my real book are different than yours? Mine is the sixth edition and in “I Could Write a Book” mine goes two beats per chord like Cmaj7, A-7, D-7, G7, E-7, A-7, D-7, G7 while yours goes Cmaj7, A-7, D-7, G7, Cmaj7 (for 6beats), G7 I’m confused
I think calling it the bible of jazz is going overboard. It's seen as a solid introduction to jazz but serious jazz musicians will judge you quite a bit if you show up at a gig and play versions of standards from the Real Book. Its more the "training wheels" of jazz, and I mean that metaphorically but that is literally what it is. It's a great starting place and you can get solidly good with repertoire using it in plenty of ways, but many of the versions in it are still inaccurate when going over the majority of jazz artists' music, especially the original black jazz artists, because most of them didn't give any sort of publicly released sheet music, they wanted people to learn by ear and transcribing it themselves. That resulted in bad transcriptions from the berklee college students who made the Real Book, they were never given legal rights to release the sheet music for many artists, and often times they were transcribing the wrong versions(they'd do some more contemporary versions) and not the originals so they'd often leave out important hooks and have them in wrong keys, white jazz artists mostly gave up their own sheet music for the book and had released sheet music already but this resulted in all the original jazz artists from the black community not having accurate excerpts in the real book. And, so to truly get their songs correct you have to transcribe them by ear, and if you're out in the jazz community people will definitely judge you if you're playing songs directly out of the real book and are playing the wrong stuff. People expect you to learn the originals and they'll test you on it when they jam with you too, they'll know exactly what's going on if they say play a song and you don't play it in the original key, and they will assume you aren't a serious musician. In the jazz community, using the real book isn't looked down on in early stages, but it is looked down on if you don't lose those "training wheels" and learn the correct version/original through your own hard work in transcription. So anyone getting the real book should keep this in mind when using the real book, if you intend on being a serious/professional jazz musician make sure you are aware of this, if you're just learning this stuff to learn it it's no big deal though. This is just food for thought if you're going to go into the professional jazz communities.
Do “ professional” jazz players actually like Jazz? I ask because the amount of snobbery and gatekeeping I see is atrocious and it’s slowly killing that which they supposedly love. The Real book is fine. It’s a good start. Is making your own transcription a good skill and help you as a musician? Absolutely I agree with that, but you need new people to come into an art to keep it alive and the Real Book helps with that.

It's to avoid sympathetic vibration from open strings mainly
