Kate is a genius, a true original. Her voice, songwriting, arranging & production are so unique that nobody sounds like her. "Wuthering Heights" hit the airways in 1978 and it was just a jolt to the senses -- she was the first woman to reach #1 in the UK with a self written song and album. Kate was a teenager, her genius was so obvious even at this young age. Kate is mostly self-taught. Prince is another vocalist to study, he was born 1 month before Kate and was also a self-taught child prodigy. Everything about him was so original and wild.

You would flip out if you heard “Kite”; her range is incredible! I love her vocal characters and use of arrangement, tones, and backing harmony vocal placement! Such a complete artist

A great analysis of a classic Kate Bush, I would be interested in an analysis of Kate's debut single "Wuthering Heights" which made an immediate impact.

You interpreted that scene perfectly. That song for Max is her totem, her anchor to the real world, and becomes her anchor to her friends in this battle for her life.

I know this a vocal reaction but you (just for the sheer joy of it) you should watch Kate Bush’s orginal video to this. The Dance she does is really stunning. Great reaction by the way to the genius that is Kate Bush. You must check out out Wuthering Heights, The Man with a Child in His Eyes, This Womans’s work but the list of her songs to reccomend just goes on. Wuthering Heights vocally is extraordinary to say the least and as a debut single it was number 1 for several weeks in the UK and across Europe.

Kate Bush and many other 80's artists were very theatrical in nature. Love this song!(I'm an 80's kid)

Kate is very much the full package: she learnt interpretative dance with Lindsay Kemp, who taught David Bowie, and mime training as well. It is Kate who is dancing here. And there is a link to Peter Gabriel (as you know now with their duet Don't Give Up). It would be worth looking at some of her later work, which is probably more accessible, although still quite cerebral: The Sensual World. This Woman's Work and Moments of Pleasure are all beautiful. She's a musical genius!

Yeah And ALSO, it's a perfect song because she's actually running up that hill to her friends! Boy! I'm going to have to watch Stranger Things. I've been avoiding it because I don't want to get sucked into TV again but this looks so good! And of course, as a Kate Bush fan from back when she first came on the scene, I'm thrilled that they brought her music back! And, YES! I have all of her music on cassettes! LOL

Nice commentary. Another video that shows lots of interesting vocal technique is Eivor's "Trollabundin". I'll be impressed if you can point out how to apply those techniques.

Bush said the lyrics address the inability of men and women to understand each other. She imagined that by making "a deal with God", they could exchange places and reach a greater understanding. The song was originally titled "A Deal with God", but representatives at EMI Records feared this would make it unpopular in more religious countries. The album version of the song is listed as "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)".
The music video features Bush performing an interpretive dance with dancer Misha Hervieu. The video was directed by David Garfath while the dance routines were choreographed by Diane Grey.Bush and Hervieu are shown wearing grey hakama.Bush wanted the dancing in "Running Up That Hill" to be more of a classical performance. She stated that dance in music videos was "being used quite trivially, it was being exploited: haphazard images, busy, lots of dances, without really the serious expression, and wonderful expression, that dance can give. So we felt how interesting it would be to make a very simple routine between two people, almost classic, and very simply filmed. So that's what we tried, really, to do a serious piece of dance."
The choreography draws upon contemporary dance with a repeated gesture suggestive of drawing a bow and arrow, intercut with surreal sequences of Bush and Hervieu searching through crowds of masked strangers. At the climax of the song, Bush's partner withdraws from her and the two are then swept away from each other and down a long hall in opposite directions by an endless stream of anonymous figures wearing masks made from pictures of Bush and Hervieu's faces. MTV chose not to show this video (at the time of its original release) and instead used a playback "live" performance of the song recorded at a promotional appearance on the BBC TV show Wogan. According to Paddy Bush, "MTV weren't particularly interested in broadcasting videos that didn't have synchronized lip movements in them. They liked the idea of people singing songs.".

Being a voice teacher, I wonder how you would react to Kate's evil sister, Nina Hagen.
Nina has a more versatile and powerful instrument than Kate, but more than that, she is completely uninhibited from fear of ridicule and this allows her to explore her voice in unusual ways.
Although she had some training, I believe it was rudimentary.
I suggest you react to Future is now (album version).

Nina was an opera singer in her then Communist East Germany.... So, nothing rudimentary here. Both were/are great. But, due to smoking, heavy drugs and aging, Nina lost her voice much more earlier than Kate (smoking+aging). Kate's voice today is softer, darker and velvety than in her peak years (which was The Sensual World). Unfortunately, Nina's voice today has turned into a very slashing sound, not in a good way like happened with Marianne Faithful or Joni Mitchell. It's in a very bad way. It's a shame that Nina treated so bad her own voice. I would love to watch a reaction for her iconoclastic live version of "Naturträne". Best Kate's Vocal performance is, in my humble opinion, "Rocket's Tail"

@@Ignatius1972 I never read anything about Nina having had any formal training in opera. If so, where and by who? I think it's a myth.
I'm more inclined to believe she didn't have any trining at all and I saw her explaining that a friend of her mother told her to yawn. I never read or heard her saying that she was classically trained.
I read that the state tv provided her some training in acting and music production.
