I spent 31 happy years living in Bargoed Hall, the large house at the bottom of Cardiff Rd My late father was Dr Lewis, and we moved to Bargoed in early 1970, so I can remember when Bargoed was still thriving and doing well When the bypass opened, that was the end of the town, as motorists no longer had to drive through the town What became of Hanburys Cafe, with Mario and his mother Mary His ice cream was so much nicer than Riccis. I now live in North Wales, having moved there back in 1999, Thank you for posting your videos, it brings back very fond memories
Doctor Lewis , was my parents Doctor , they always said he was the best doctor in Bargoed and he was a true gentleman . Bargoed Hall is still there it still looks as lovely as it was , it is now assisted living for vulnerable adults. Mario’s is gone it is now a Turkish kebab house so sadly now more ice cream 😢
Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it as I'm proud of my home town, Bargoed is a ghost town now but in the 1970's it was the hub of the South Wales valleys.
Hi Andrew, I went to school with you in all those places of learning. Very sad to see my old schools gone. Some very clever and successful people went there. Finally, you never mentioned the most famous person of all to come from Bargoed, Mr Nicholas 'Chow' Powell, how could you forget him. Well done and thanks for sharing, I enjoyed this video, hope you are well. Best wishes, Kev
I went to Bargoed grammar and hated the culture of bullying and strict rules. I didn't do well there. Ceri Edwards 😮His wife taught at Gilfach Fargoed Juniors and was lovely. Best school days there 😊. Loving your Bargoed vlogs, thanks
Brilliant interesting video i too remember keery edwards head master in his long black cloak and hat absolutley terrified of him we all were he was very very strict kids wouldnt dare do anything scarry he was . I loved bargoed town shopping was brill you could get everything in bargoed but not now all towns are the same now Look forward to next video thank you .
The last time I saw Ceri Edwards was probably about 1977. I was hitch-hiking near Crymych and his Wolseley Hornet drives past in the opposite direction, with him and his missus in it. Although I had left his school about 7 year previous, I felt straight away that he would probably do a u-turn and come back to place me on detention for not being in uniform. ;-) (But I suppose he didn't want to spoil his own Summer holiday.) I remember his pock-marked face as he sailed past, because it seemed to show signs that he remembered me; even though I had already graduated from another dreadful school in the Midlands. He was also an occasional German teacher in my time there. It always felt like attending a Hitler Youth meeting.
That's excellent. Mr Borrett kept a diary, I wonder if his daughter has it. I would be curious of his memories of his time as headmaster when I was there. Thank you for watching and your welcome comment. Best wishes from Andrew.
@@thecelticdruid7707 I will ask Annette ( his daughter) and find out if she still has it and get back to You , get well now take each day as it comes …
2:02 Dexter your like David Attenborough in full flow ,same year as you in Heolddu some interesting video's you put on here . Bargoed looking pitiful a lick of paint in the high street and railway station would be a big help to the town ,keep well mate.
Really interested post. It is very important to have these memories recorded for posterity. So much history has been lost. We have this forever now which is great. Bullying is horrible and unfortunately still happens. Some of it has move online. Why was Doris Hare born under a viaduct? Hanbury Arms is a very big building to be shut up? Is the court still in use? I remember the Granada TV shop where you paid for your renting TV. Do you remember where it was? Also loved the Emporium and its way of moving money around.
Doris Hare was born under the viaduct as who parents were travellers in a mobile theatre, they parked the travelling theatre under Bargoed viaduct and Doris was born there in March 1905. Thank you so much for watching. Best wishes to you. From Andrew
my dad was the manager of shipkos pawn brokers in 1957 where icleland is now ,and i grew up in ruth street opposite gladstone villas , i used to deliver papers there
I lived at Gladstone villa in Cardiff road from August 1969 to June 1978. I've seen black and white photos of the Shipko's pawn brokers. Thank you for watching and for your welcome comment. I hope I brought back some memories for you. Best wishes from Andrew.

In the late 60s, The Emporium was occupied by MacDonalds department store. One of the few approved places you could buy Bargod Grammar tech uniform.
I wish the Emporium was still open. Thank you for watching the video.

The pub in bargoed they did some filming there few years back filming stella the tv series around the valley’s
I was there when they filmed Stella in 2015. I saw Ruth Jones coming out of the Hanbury pub. I filmed it and it's on RUclips.
I worked on another production in Bargoed called Ordinary Lies.
I like Bargoed it just a shame it is kind of forgotten if you compare it to Blackwood and Caerphilly.
