“Warmth” explores the tension of dissociation with its accompanying process of assimilation through the voice of the Japanese soprano, Kaoko Amano, who has spent the last 10 years living in Vienna. I composed the score, together with the libretto, by drawing from dried flower arrangements which wilted over time on my studio floor. I juxtaposed fragmented sonic material, in Japanese and German, to forms new language, where 2 voices interleave themselves in the text. This process highlights some aspects of the psychological context that a foreigner experiences when assimilating into a new culture. This journey towards Warmth and its associations is the theme of this mini chamber opera.

All my music owes its presence to these talented people, who can bring my manuscripts, sometimes requiring much practice and patience to interpret the mystery that is not actually written on the page, but written between the notes and in the ether.
