I kind of thought it was all just part of his journal, that he was dying throughout the story, writing it himself. When they are parked at the school, she sees the bloody tissues in the glove box and Jake freaks a bit about it. Prior to that, she had had a nosebleed. Once she enters the school, she sees the car is gone because it was never there. Her headache gets worse, the metallic taste gets worse, as does her nosebleeds. Throughout the whole book, her health gets worse until she is revealed to be Jake. I imagined he wrote this entire thing as he was dying.

OMG! Yes!!!! As I realized where the story was heading, I had the same thoughts. This person is dying or is dead and doesn't realize it yet. Kinda like a ghost or out of body experience. Once I reached the end, I wondered if the person was writing as he was dying and that's why the nose bleed, the metallic taste, etc.

Every time there was a mention of "only one question" and our protagonist wondered what the question is, I couldn't help but think of "To be or not to be, that is the question", and it was interesting to see that that was actually the question in this case (although it wasn't explicitly stated, which I liked).

Loved this! I just finished the book and I totally needed this analysis to calm my brain. One thing I would like to get your thoughts on.... the one girl with the rash at the Dairy Queen. She said “you don’t have to go.” I’m thinking that was like Jake rethinking his decision to end things or maybe even someone who may have saw a glimpse and was trying to be there and let him know he didn’t have to go through with it.... idk what do you think?

That's an interesting take.. I was thinking it had a lot to do with the physical projections of Jake's mental state. The girl states somewhere that 'fear is like a rash' and I think this is referring to how this anxiety is spreading throughout jakes psyche and causing it's deterioration.... kinda relating to the pig?

i love your analysis and it makes a lot of things so much clearer. i listened to the audiobook and towards the end, when the girlfriend goes back to the high school dance poster, there's this bit where they say "what are you waiting for" again and again and again and that slowly transitions to a man's voice. i was wondering what that means and i guess it's jake slowly realizing that he does want to end things because he's shedding these characters behind and removing this veil. he's wondering what he's waiting for, why ISN'T he just killing himself? and so he does it.

I just had a very sad thought. The scratches on the door to the basement, Jake mentions he had a dog. The basement being a metaphor for being stuck in your own mind, in a depressive state, with the lock being on the inside (to me) clearly shows that you’re the only one that can get yourself out of that state. But the dog might’ve been trying to get through to Jake to help him, as animals often do. When Jake was stuck in the basement (his depression), the dog would claw at the door and try to get him out.
That’s it, I’m going to go cry now.

Definitely the ‘same’ ending with the reveal but it’s going to be done in a way that mainstream audiences won’t hate. IMO. I noticed a few changes in the trailer too. Different hair colors from the book. The farmhouse in my head looked more worn down. The dog wasn’t alive in the book(I think the shaking of the dog is showing his ear issues and ringing) looking forward to this movie and I’m expecting it to be a solid 8/10

One thing I noticed was the similarities between the mother and the girlfriend near the end of the book. The mother has the big toenail on her right foot missing, then the girlfriend realises one of her fingernails is missing. The mother pulls her hair out (the father said she has trichotillomania), and then in the school clumps of the girlfriend’s hair are falling out. Plus, the mother has tinnitus and the girlfriend keeps hearing the country song while in the school, but questioning whether it got louder and whether it has been playing the whole time.

Thank you! When I listened to the audio book I felt dumb bc I didn’t get the ending lol, but your review helped me understand it so much better. ❤️
However, one thing is still bugging me though. When the girlfriend looks in the window of the school and sees, who i’m assuming is Jake as a janitor looking back and her, and then laying face down on the floor and “slithering”, what was that supposed to mean? For some reason that part is the most unsettling thing in the book to me and I still don’t really understand it??
Since Jake is actually the girlfriend, was that Jake picturing how he would look dead or something? Idk lol

Sorry! Late to this discussion so just tossing my two cents out there lol
I think the shirt is representative of a childhood memory (maybe memories) of Jake’s.
This is about the point in the book the “girlfriend” is feeling really nauseous and sick and is kind of flashing in and out of childhood memories, and when “she” finds the shirt, she “knows that it used to be hers and doesn’t know how it got there” I think this is representative of Jake coming to a point of, “How did I get here?” as he comes to terms with the fact that he’s decided to kill himself

I also dont really get the t-shirt thing. But about the paint, I thought that maybe this is just his own blood and he was slowly dying while writing that story. It's the moment of realization that he is dying and there is no going back.

I'm curious about the meaning behind the cookie Ms. Veal offered her. We know she tampered with the cookies because they made the gfs mom sick. But she said that if the gf is "good" she'll get a cookie. But if she is "bad" she will take her away from her parents. I think Ms. Veal represents the suicide because if Jake decided to live he will continue to hurt (eating the cookie) but if he dies he is gone forever. What do you think??

Debate PTX A metaphor for the battle between his wants and needs-tainted by the dark state of his mind. Each represented by a different voice...but since the voices were fusing, it communicated to me that both his wants and needs agreed with one another in the terribly sad end. 😊

What are people's thoughts on the photos he had of body parts? Was the girlfriend ever real or was she always just Jake?

    • @annatom4629
      @annatom4629 3 года назад

Well, the envelope was named Us, so it could be representing his characters in his mind/story. When the Janitor or the old Jake was young, he did meet that girl in a pub and they had conversation, and he wanted to talk to her more and get to know her and he even written his number in a napkin, but couldn't give it due to his social phobia or some other personality disorder (probably avoidant personality disorder). I think some people might not understand his obsession with that woman, but I think the reason why he so obsessed with her was because it was around that time or a bit later that meeting that he gave up his PhD career. His parents also could have been alive that time. He was also young back then, where he did not have much problems with his body like now, therefore, he was imagining/writing a scenario like "What if he had given his number back then? Would he have stayed in his job?
