I was there for aircraft mechanic school (Jet over 2 Engines) class 09-01-3A. Read that as January 9,1963. The A was morning shift for school. Went to school on B-47's there then straight to C-130's for 30 years. That was the real Air Force!

Basic at Lackland, tech school at Chanute in Rantoul Illinois, then in 1966 PCS to Amarillo AFB. Worked in Special Purpose Vehicle Maintenance (aircraft refueling trucks, fire trucks and aircraft towing tractors). Lived in the barracks in late '66 and '67. Met and married a cute little Texas girl and lived off-base in town (Amarillo). Believe it or not, the Air Force loved me enough that I made Staff Sgt. (E5) in my first hitch - right there at Amarillo AFB! Dreary place and nothing much to do in terms of recreation (unless you're a newlywed living off base). ;-)

I went through Basic Training at Amarillo AFB in 1967. Your pictures brought back great memories of Amarillo AFB. Not much changed from 1961 to 1967.... Great pictures James Tansey...

My dad was the locksmith at AMARILLO Airforce Base from 1950 until 1967 when we were transferred to Lowry in Colorado after the base was closing. We hated Denver and moved back home in 68 and he went to work for the post office until he retired from civil service. He was Army infantry in WW2 and fought in Italy, France and Germany from 1942 until 1945. He was a wonderful man!

70230 Admin Specialist. Only class on 'C' Shift. School 6:00 pm to Midnight, always marching to school even bad weather. Breakfast at 1:00 am. March to barracks, sleep, up real early to get ready for inspection each morning. Never could leave squadron area without being in formation, even if only 2 airmen. Flashlights and Road Guard Belts had to be worn always. Very little free time every day including weekends.
