I didn't realise how little I knew about 'dry-stone walling' until I watched this upload! Thank you Josh, for me, one of the best you have done in terms of tuition, just excellent. BTW, love the music at about 23 minutes!
I just bought a house with this style wall and I don't have a clue nor the money to hire someone. You I believe you're going to be a life saver because I have to do the exact thing you're doing here!
Greetings from the US and thanks for a great tutorial and commentary. Love that you showed your work, just like the teacher asks for in math (maths) class. : ) About 10 years ago we hired a landscaper to install a couple of short retaining walls to terrace a slope and divert water away from the house. It looked great, compared to the old slope, but even then I could see that all the dry stacked rocks weren't 100% tight -- but I didn't know any better. I'm gearing up to do repairs to fix spots where the wall has sunk back against the slope. Question: by "hearting" do you mean sufficient rough rubble between the rocks and the native soil?
What do you do when you blow your lower back out? This just happened to me. I stacked 3 tons of rocks then a medium sized rock took me out. Any tips for healing?
Josh, you've inspired me to repair my own dry stone retaining wall, which is buckling from roots too! Only problem is its on a slight slope from left to right. Should I start my base at the low end of the grade and work my way up, or start from the high end?
Yes I would start from the lowest end. It will help to keep the courses level but just try not to use up all the big stones down one end 👍 Thanks for watching!
@@J.HarveyStonework well we have an extremely old civil war dry stone wall and have already killed 3 rattlesnakes in 3 weeks!! They were pregnant too!! Trying to figure out on what to do and how to keep them away? Our walls are completely clean nothing around them. Any advice
Love the running commentary. Sounds just like the internal ongoing thoughts I have and even songs I make up while enjoying myself walling.
🤣
"Let's try you- you've been wait'n patiently." I lol'd. This is a great video to watch.

Yes, basically you want no air just stone! Less space the better! Thanks for watching! 👍

To be fair I just find regularly stretching and also dangling from a beam now and then helps
Beginner question: don't you need a geotextile or something to keep the dirt out of your wall?
Great question! As long as the wall is packed tight with stone & “hearting” dirt won’t travel far or effect the wall 👍

μπραβο..
More tutorial videos please! 😄👍🏻
I will when I get a chance! 👍
So no snakes were or in that wall? That’s one of their fav spots were you not worried?
👍
If I wanted to fix my wall like your doing to that wall then I can’t leave nature to it unless we want to be bit in the face
Sounds nasty 🫣
Yesssssss
I don't think people realize that either you have a knack for it, or you don't
Enjoying it as well!
I generally have smoko just before starting and then don't start for a protracted time. 😂
Trees wreck walls, houses, paved areas. Need to be 20ft away. I've been told that roots generally go out as far as the canopy.
🤣
@@J.HarveyStonework I've got all the gear, with the right idea.. but I'll start next year.. maybe 🤣.
🤣
Would it look bad if you concreted the gaps?
Yes bad all round. Wouldn’t be a dry stone wall 👍

Luckily in England we don’t have the problem of rattlesnakes so wouldn’t really be able to advise. Personally I just leave nature too it 👍
@@hollyjones8775 I keep forgetting about snakes!!! Guess I won't be building a dry stone wall. That's one less hobby for me, so there's that.
