This is the most meta, self-parodying, self-deconstructing episode of The X-Files since Jose Chung's From Outer Space (also a Darin Morgan gem). Satire at its best. And yet, it was the first in the season to give me the nostalgic "feels." Morgan doesn't pander to the fandom, he writes the stories he wants to, and the show is better off for it.
I legit fucking thought Ghost Busters pulled up in that episode. I forgot that's what mental hospital mobiles looked like and I was like "Who called them?"
That's why I'm here too...I'm benging The X Files today... I watched this episode and noticed that too...does anyone have an answer to what was taken out????
This episode was so damn funny. I was dying. I mean, the actual episode, but also you haha :) Oh and Scully's last line about the jello, but really about everything, all the feels. "I want to remember how it all was." ME TOO SCULLY!
Reginald Greene I agree! I think that was one of the most profound scenes in the episodes and very poignant in the current political and social climate. This episode really show that The X-Files has realized where it is right now, and how the world has changed since the 90s. And that it's trying to make itself relevant but that has posed to be more difficult than before.
This episode is a masterpiece, it is one of the best episodes of the series, especially for the fans. So many details and so many memories of all seasons. I think we are (the fans) like Reggie Something, we believe we are part of the team of Mulder and Scully and we need to remember the series as it was and everything we have lived through these 25 years. Personally I love this episode, one of the best !!
SoleNero21 yup it is! She said in an interview how ironic was that Scully was looking for her son yet in real life she is missing out in her own kids experiences since they live in London so I understand it’s still sad will miss her 😢
thekarenfiles wish you didn't mention about her son in the tv show, after that reveal smoking man made It felt disturbing, Mulder was cucked by that old timer. I'll be missing the show once it's over, this was a good reunion, I wish this show had more recognition
@@thekarenfiles Yes, I agree she was away from her kids while filming here. I don't go beyond the X files with any of them (meaning I don't watch interviews with them or other shows they done) and I think being a mom is very important to her so I get it. It doesn't mean I won't miss what they gave us all those years ago.
I really enjoy your recaps. I was interested to see your thoughts on this episode and wasn't entirely surprised on your opinions, given your other recaps. That being said, I personally thought this episode was genius. It was a satire of Morgan's reign of satire acting as commentary of how we all feel about and react to the show, and its place in the past as well as the present and future. Did any of it ever really make sense? I don't know. I think that juxtaposition between the characters in this episode showcases the longstlanding feelings and reactions of fans, in all of our different tastes, to the show. Ending with us often feeling like Skinner at the end: exasperated as gell, going "WTF?!" I also felt like it was great nod to and recognition of the question: are our feelings about the show still the same as they were when many of watched it on its first run? I can tell you that as I have rewatched the show at different phases of my life, my thoughts and perspectives on characters and episodes have changed drastically. Things that once seemed wonderful now have lost their luster, and things that once seemed lackluster are now satisfying. At the end of every viewing, I ask myself should we have kept making and eating the proverbial goop-o? Perhaps I should just set down the spoon, cherish my memories, and move on. I think it is easy to take this episode at face value, but I can't. The layers that become visible after it sets (I couldn't myself there.) are many, and I can't help but feel like Morgan is probably the most genius person ever for being able to create this episode. The self-awareness, fan and social commentary, and overall chemistry masked in something that could easily be taken as sheerly absurd camp was just sublime, and it made me feel like it will be okay to say good bye when the time comes. Alright, off my soap box.
Love that they seem so much closer in this season, except when Mulder is being Mulder lost in his mind but the way he looks at her in the car (not-a-date) and at the end is full of love ** At this point the real x files is: will we ever see them on a real date with a kiss?
I agree with you. This episode was fun and I had a few laughs, but overall, Darin Morgan isn't my cup of tea. I'm glad so many fans loved it though and they feel satisfied. Developing Mulder and Scully's relationship is what I like most though.
For me the whole point is that the Mandela Effect also affected the audience, it removed Reggie from OUR memories. It went beyond a TV show and had a go at the viewers themselves. What other show has ever done that?
Well, it wasnt my favorite Darren Morgan episode certainly, but I laughed enough to forgive all the little issues. I loved the whole 'date' idea and how Mulder was constantly fking it up, just like in the og eps, and then Scully would look at him exasperated, wondering how she is supposed to have a relationship with this man 😅 I have the sense that they are trying to work their way back together this season after some terrible rift (before s10) that was never explained to us. I love Darren Morgan for just how crazy he can be, so I appreciated this ep for that same slightly unbalanced perspective he brings, even if this time it was greatly amplified. I see it as exactly what they said- an almost alternate universe story. The Xfiles major tag line is 'the truth is out there', and now here we are 20+ yrs later living in a world where it is increasingly hard for people to identify the truth when they see it- nor do many want to see it...it begs the question of how important IS the "truth" anymore and how unbalanced and crazy it feels to experience a world that way where we can't agree on what actually happened. You feel slightly insane. I think that was the point of this ep and I loved it! P.s. you know they totally got busy after that camera panned up there at the end!
You hit the nail on the head, Snakey. It was the date stuff that I liked best: Scully dressed and ready to go out and him not realizing that she has even left after he blows it. GOLD I imaging dating Mulder to be exasperating at times and I felt for her in a new way... Also, Reggie's wink at her in the end had me laughing too. PS... Love your vids.
I feel like this episode went over the heads for some people. I don't mean to insult anyone, it's just that this episode explores some pretty abstract themes, and a lot of it is told in subplot. There is no real plot, and I think that's what makes some people confused. Like, where's the action? Aside from this being a hella funny episode, it's also one that needed to be made in our post-truth era. I mean, the CIA basically admitted to have investigated UFO:s and nobody seems to care, we seem to be more interested in the Kardashians. The X-Files has always been about the subjectification of truth, and this episode is pretty much a culmination of this theme. I read a few interviews with Darin Morgan, and my takeaway is that he doesn't want to pander to the fans, he just wants to tell the stories he thinks are important to the show, to deconstruct the characters and to look at them from different perspectives.
Reggie worked in the defense department listening conversations. Maybe the "Skulls" and "Sugar Boobs" thing he just heard it from Mulder to Scully at some point in the life? hehehe
I loved this ep. It has so many layers on current events and how we've evolved into this online "reality".it Was also such a great nod to Sci if shows that inspired x-files the begin with(hence the daren Morgan generation) the alien, the sanitarium car and the guy w giant net. Dr. They's eye makeup. It was all so perfect. Also, sculls broke up with foxy. So it is a bit weird watching their relationship at this point - hopefully it will have a happy ending. But I love seeing them together and seeing them a bit older and how the dynamic is different but the love they have for each other is still the same.
Scully knows she'd never have a normal relaltionship with Mulder. Not saying that's an excuse not to get fed up every time Mulder is being 'mulder' but still XD
Here's my question: the scene where Mulder is looking through his tapes is in his house in the middle of nowhere. The next scene is Scully in a parking garage, where Reggie says "he stood ya up again". Isn't that the parking garage of the Hoover building? Is that supposed to mean it's the next night?
I totally agree... didn't think much of this episode, considering there is only 10 episodes to tie everything up and they wasted it on this. Only positive is the mulder and scully dynamic was there.
This episode had its moments where I was cracking up (LOVED Scully’s wtf looks - I probably laughed harder than I should’ve; I’m blaming the alcohol) but DAMN! I love Darin’s writing but I ended this episode going “what the actual fuck did I just watch?” The “I’m Fox-freakin’-Mulder ya punks!” scene was underwhelming. I was sad. I wanted to laugh really hard at it.
1. You're the best. Adore the recaps. Basically you say all my thoughts. 2. This episode was kind of meh but i liked the cute stuff. 3. That promo short hair with the dramatic turn - I live. It's reminiscent of the Mary McDonnell turn in Donnie Darko, which will forever be ultimate.
If you paid attention you would realize that the alien is in fact the Great Kazoo from the Flintstones who has landed on 🌎 to tell the dumb dumb earthlings not to travel anywhere outside our galaxy or we would be vaporized.
Absolutely relatable. I mean it was really nice, really funny and I loved the callbacks, but it didn't seem to add anything to the plot. I think I'd probably liked it better if they hadn't published the Mid-season promo. It is funny, it feels classic, but there was something missing, the episode ends and you go like "Okay, really nice but what the hell just happened? What was that for?". Feels like a filler, really. At least, it is a funny one. Also, I was dying to see your review. Absolutely worth it.
Look, those two FBI Agents are acting weird again, fifteen years later and they are still cloak and dagger in the parking garage together. At least they're still Mulder and Scully......
BTW the man from the dreams came up again in this episode, while Mulder was checking on his board. Maybe this is all made by William's mind and that's why Mulder and Scully doesn't have all of the sex they should be having.
There's also a chance that this is the past; that all we've seen this season are memories. I mean, they have been really emphatic about "the past is not as you remember" and playful with parallel realities concept... Maybe this is Mulder or Scully remembering their past. But those are just theories... The fact is that this season is happening to be the best since season 7... I'm really pleased with what X-Files is delivering.
I really hope this is not still a dream sequence from scully cause I really think it would be a dumb idea and just a cop out for the last season. Interesting I also picked up the new website that mulder & scully research Ghouli.com has a reference to the creepy dream guy where it is written (most likely by William) that in his visions he sees 'a man with the eyebrows'
The political jargon is wearing on me. I know the political situation is a mess, but I don't watch X files to be reminded of that. And this was not the old Darin Morgan I was hoping for. But it had deeper meaning, and if you stand back from it and look at what it was saying, it was really a testimony to what we complain about. Darin knows we want for him to perfectly recreate the X files we grew up on, but that isn't going to happen because everything is different. They won't be able to capture all the magic again. So if we don't want to be disappointed, we should stick with our memories. Not that I'm sorry to have new X files! I think we just need to heed the warning that they won't fill the old void. :) At least Mulder and Scully are in a fitting place and acting in character. I love seeing that, and I can't wait to meet William. (And be assured he is Mulder's son!)
I agree so much with everything you said! I wanted to love this episode simply because Darin Morgan is a legend among X-files fans from back in the day. Something was very off about this whole thing, and I think you're right. It doesn't work anymore, because the world has changed. I also don't like the constant jabs at the POTUS. I think you have to show a bit of restraint when it comes to that. Too much dissing and it starts to get old fast. This episode was just too weird for me. Hopefully, next week's will be better.
The scene with David Duchovney's grown-up face on the child always cracks me up. I remember when I first watched this episode, when it got to the part about Scully and the gelatin, I was like "PLEASE, do NOT show Gillian's face over a little girl's face!" Is it a good or bad thing that they didn't?
Man I thoroughly disagree. This episode was the best of the season so far! Hilarious satire, and it seems Darren Morgan is self aware of the fact that show probably shouldn't have come back, so he made an episode literally about how we'll always have the memories of the original. The 50's B movie thing is genius to show his fictional memory and the Trump speech at the end was hilarious. Personally, I thought this was on par with Jose Chung's, but you know, everyone's got their own reasons they watch the x files. Obviously yours is not for this kinda stuff and that's ok.
Gillian's "bing bing bong bong bing" comment was more genius than we ever knew - a response to a fan question about "if you had to spread some "fake news about season 11, what would it be?" - ruclips.net/video/f24vIwQgpFY/видео.html&t=26m38s - LOL!
I was pretty much with you for episodes 1-3, but we disagree on this one. I loved it! Not Darin's best of all time, but still insanely enjoyable and hysterical. Especially once we got to that final case... I was ROLLING with laughter over the segway, and then the speech happened. Loved it.
The Mandela Effect is where people - not just one but a lot of people - share the same faulty memory about a person or event, for example a lot of people for some reason thinking Mandela DIED before apartheid ended and never lived to be South Africa's President... another variation is the misspellings of Berestein Bears children's books or Dr. Suezz's name. This episode is a deconstruction of memory - both factual and nostalgic - and how it is altered by "fake news" and constant lying in the media. It's also about Sasquatching: the act of hunting for Sasquatch while dressed as Sasquatch.
This episode makes me think I'm losing it, I swear at one point reggie is taking to mulder/scully in the parking garage and in the middle of his rant, there is a editing jump cut and a bleeped out word, but no one else has mentioned it.
Enjoyed your review and the episode. I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I heard Scully say "Leprechaun taint" when referring to the taste of the lime flavored Goop-O ABC. You wondered about Bing, Bong. I think it gets back to the alien's space fence comments echoing our president. ruclips.net/video/niSLZDVApdQ/видео.html
first= this episode of the "twilight zone was called "will the real martian stand up" for you younger people but what will really should fry your brain is that the voice of the alien is the same man from twilight zones " to serve man" from 50 years ago! can you explain that, Candice?
Always love your reviews!! You're my spirit animal 😂. This episode was making a lotta fun of our current Political situation with the bing bing bong thing (ya... The leader of our country actually said that in a speech... 🙄)... But ANYway, I'm not looking forward to the short hair either, her hair and her are so beautiful and they both look so amazing!!! I hope the rest of the episodes are better. See ya next week! :)
Love your reviews lol Edit: You should review ALL the series for YT! I just can't imagine an episode review for Game of Thrones or House of Cards (yikes)
I'll have to disagree with you on this one. This episode was a super smart and cheeky commentary on the current world of fake news and revisionist history. The entire episode was camp, every second of it, on purpose, to draw attention to the absurdities that we live with every day. I thought it was fantastic writing and acting by all concerned, and it's one of my favourite episodes of the whole season.
Big-time X-Files fan since 1990s, but.............. the two seasons of the reboot have both sucked. The truth isn't out there anymore.........................
Anyone remember when Mulder literally takes Scully on a case knowing they'll walk away from it and spend an entire day in a different city in order to get Scully to go to a sports game with him? Yeah? And then some creepy serial killer ruins their fucking date and it's most likely the only time we could have seen the two go on a real date together or at the very least the one time we could have seen Mulder put some real effort into it? Then when my dude has her, he decides to give up on the dates. Mulder, how about you try to make that first date that got ruined a reality? Instead of doing this weird bullshit. I know you're quirky and cute but come on.
(Btw, the baseball date? Okay Mulder. I'll give you some props for that. That was cute as fuck and you seemed to put some actual effort into that. Just saying, Mulder is kinda shit at planing stuff to do with Scully most of the time so I'm pissed they didn't get to see that sports game together. Even tho Scully didn't exactly seemed too thrilled about it but Mulder was legit so excited and he genuinely put a lot of effort into it.)
I was about to point out where the bing bing bong came from, but I see someone has already posted a Trump video. Anyway, loving your videos, 100% agreed!! Young Mulder was the creepiest thing! Feel bad for Scully who did't get her proper date - or food! heh
that bing bing bon bong bing. There is some video on youtube, just search for Trump bing bong. Trump is saying something stupid as usual and there you have it. Hope this helps. Love your reviews Candice
I feel like you missed the point of the episode. This was a meta commentary on the X Files at large. Fanfiction, insanity, jokes on political environment are all present in their absurdity for a reason. Sometimes absurdity exists for the sake of absurdity.
Alright Candice this episode is for Baby Boomers. But good to see someone in their twenties gets the X-Files. I love this episode. I can't stop watching it. Too bad you didn't like it. I thought it was brilliant.
I think this episode trashed Twin Peaks The Revival. Mercilessly mocked the recent series. Parallel universe jokes a plenty. Even the character in the B&W footage looked the same as the DJ in Twin Peaks episode 8. I thought this "meta" episode was pretty brilliant.
I enjoy your reactions but I have to disagree, I loved this episode. It was so weird and random, it reminded me of the episode when the "men in black" shows up and Jesse Ventura keeps doing the back breaker move on that nerd guy. Best episodes of X files.
Ben Harper I thought it was OK? without the humor and the wit. And to me the Scully/Mulder interractions felt off and she lookedvso polished it was freaky.
I was confused by the ep, but there were funny moments that i had to laugh at...but still confused. But i still thumbs up it because as my other post shows... i loved the name Sugar Boobs and i hope Mulder uses it in future eps.
I didn't care for this episode a all. I want mythology episodes. Thankfully episode 5 is gonna be mythology. More of those please! Keep up the great reviews beauty!
I’m going to respectfully disagree with your opinion of this episode. I thought it was fantastic. The social commentary was on point as Darin Morgan’s episodes always are. And it was hilarious as ever!
Much agreed it was probably the best episode of the season.
One thing I don't understand is how Scully left the unremarkable house in rural VA...and emerged in a parking garage??...
I am totally confused by this too!!
OK, let's go over this one more time......because she is SCULLY!!
The mental hospital car reminded me of 'The Ghost Busters'
Did you notice that it said "Spotnitz Sanitorium" on the backdoor? I wonder how many other easter eggs there were like that in this episode!

Jack Shelton oh you're right!! I remember it. Dude! What do you think that might be about!?

This episode was actually amazing the entire time. Dr They's speech about being in a post cover up world was amazing.

"This is me trying to figure out why you the two of you are not having sex right now" I spit out my coffee!:)
They have had decent dates before... Mulder took Scully for a date on some of her birthdays... Like the Bating Cage date on s06ep19 The Unnatural.
I second that. Very true
This episode is a masterpiece, it is one of the best episodes of the series, especially for the fans.

carola0512 Agreed. I was cracking up the whole time... damn.
yess!!!!!!!!
when they did the flashback with Reggie I literally almost died from laughing so hard lol
Reggie is actually in a x file on another episode in the series. Keep an eye out!
Does anyone else feel like Reggie is Chris....hahaha
the ship sails CS
Yes!!! I do!!
I can see that. But at the NY Comi Con, the cast talked about how Reggie was Darin himself.
aww really!!! come to think of it , I do remember something like that :)

did anyone ask to themselves how skinner met reggie? M&S expression are pretty funny. my theory is that skinner used him to spy M&S on the lost years.
When I'm talking to myself watching X Files, I always say 'Sculls' 🤣

Yeah! I thought that too! I was like: does Molder now live in an apartment or what the hell happened?!
That was my question too!
Maybe it is the next night, and the bad has her change of clothes instead of food.
"Bing bing bong bong bing" THANK YOU for that reminder!

"We're having whisky tonight" earned you a thumbs up by default :) With Mulder and Scully, Scully should know by now what she's getting into.
She knows, and she wouldn't have it any other way.
I love your reviews!
If you paid attention you would realize that the alien is in fact the Great Kazoo from the Flintstones who has landed on 🌎 to tell the dumb dumb earthlings not to travel anywhere outside our galaxy or we would be vaporized.
X-Files is not a love story .... why are you so obsessed with scully and mulder having sex?
Absolutely relatable. I mean it was really nice, really funny and I loved the callbacks, but it didn't seem to add anything to the plot.
I think I'd probably liked it better if they hadn't published the Mid-season promo.
It is funny, it feels classic, but there was something missing, the episode ends and you go like "Okay, really nice but what the hell just happened? What was that for?".
Feels like a filler, really. At least, it is a funny one.
Also, I was dying to see your review. Absolutely worth it.
this is...the most relatable thing I’ve ever seen thanks
Chelle yeah, it would be really a bummer if this is all a dream. Unless seasons 8,9 and 10 were also part of the dream xD
Watching next weeks promo I can def see that William looks exactly like his dad mulder ❤️
Good!! :)

I loved this episode! I do wish that there had been root beer during the stake-out. Tooms throw back!
Gillian's "bing bing bong bong bing" comment was more genius than we ever knew - a response to a fan question about "if you had to spread some "fake news about season 11, what would it be?" - ruclips.net/video/f24vIwQgpFY/видео.html&t=26m38s - LOL!
I'm always so happy to see these ❤
I 100% agree about the short hair I could barely watch her with short in the promo
Yea, the long hair was great. I am not a short wig fan......
Love the recap!!! 👍 keep it up.
I was pretty much with you for episodes 1-3, but we disagree on this one. I loved it! Not Darin's best of all time, but still insanely enjoyable and hysterical. Especially once we got to that final case... I was ROLLING with laughter over the segway, and then the speech happened. Loved it.
I am so looking forward to next week.
Totally would love to watch Gillian Anderson saying "Bing Bing Bong Bong Bing"!!
I thought it was cleverly put into motion! Loved the last scene...
you know the funny thing is that I, personally, call her Sculls too when watching and I didnt know about that this is actually in this episode 😂
I do too. When I am watching them on late night I call her Sculls too....with a "c" not the "k" that would e weird
This episode makes me think I'm losing it, I swear at one point reggie is taking to mulder/scully in the parking garage and in the middle of his rant, there is a editing jump cut and a bleeped out word, but no one else has mentioned it.
I am extremely glad to see that the art of a spoiled jewish American princess has not been lost in your attittuded candice
Okay, why is there a parking garage under Mulder's house that is supposed to be out in the country???
All of your reviews are 💯 Pretty sure you are my xfiles soul mate.
That is exactly how I feel.
amen
She says in The X-Files panel...New York Com......I notice it too!!
Yep I noticed it too... it was sweet they put that in there
Thanks! Found it! I totally had to see her do that! ruclips.net/video/f24vIwQgpFY/видео.htmlm6s
hey but love your review as usual!
When this whole season is over, I want you to make a video of how it should have ended... I trust you more than CC at this point.
this was the funniest shit ever 🤣 finally a review I can enjoy! Subscribed💯💯
oh and I'm a mental health clinician and thanks for what you said at the end re:stigma 👍
I'm pretty sure the asylum car is from ghostbusters.
The lost art of forehead sweat is one of the best X Files episodes ever.
Darin Morgan really had a good run. He wrote 5 amazing instant classics then he shit the bed with this episode.
Well, I'm sure this was a Hitchikers's Guide to the Galaxy episode...
Big-time X-Files fan since 1990s, but.............. the two seasons of the reboot have both sucked. The truth isn't out there anymore.........................
Dana Scully deserves better!
I find it wonderful that a woman this beautiful could share my interests.
The best date Mulder ever gave her was at the batting cages. She'd probably admit that too.
This is a Fabulous & Wonderful Review that you Crafted....😝😝👻👽
I was about to point out where the bing bing bong came from, but I see someone has already posted a Trump video. Anyway, loving your videos, 100% agreed!! Young Mulder was the creepiest thing! Feel bad for Scully who did't get her proper date - or food! heh
What did those statutes mean or represent when fox was talking to dr they
Awesome reviews! Rock on!
that bing bing bon bong bing. There is some video on youtube, just search for Trump bing bong. Trump is saying something stupid as usual and there you have it. Hope this helps. Love your reviews Candice
I have to agree ...I didn't really like the episode at all. It made me laugh a few times for sure but that is not why I watch the x files :(
I liked it! Not as good as last week's ep, but still great!!
I feel like you missed the point of the episode. This was a meta commentary on the X Files at large. Fanfiction, insanity, jokes on political environment are all present in their absurdity for a reason. Sometimes absurdity exists for the sake of absurdity.
This was the greatest episode ever.
Alright Candice this episode is for Baby Boomers. But good to see someone in their twenties gets the X-Files. I love this episode. I can't stop watching it. Too bad you didn't like it. I thought it was brilliant.
ok ok Techno.
Dr They is sipposed to look like actor Abe Vigoda
I enjoy your reactions but I have to disagree, I loved this episode. It was so weird and random, it reminded me of the episode when the "men in black" shows up and Jesse Ventura keeps doing the back breaker move on that nerd guy. Best episodes of X files.
That was a great one Jose Chung....it was precious
hi. the bing stuff, was one thing of trump. and on the back door of the mental hospital car said spotnitz sanatorium. candice your vlog is great.
I adored the episode, 1st one I have liked of this season.
Ben Harper True but this one had the XF wit/humor and that XF spark of magic that I love ☺.
Ben Harper I thought it was OK? without the humor and the wit. And to me the Scully/Mulder interractions felt off and she lookedvso polished it was freaky.
I was confused by the ep, but there were funny moments that i had to laugh at...but still confused. But i still thumbs up it because as my other post shows... i loved the name Sugar Boobs and i hope Mulder uses it in future eps.
blame some programer that know some good ones
I didn't care for this episode a all. I want mythology episodes. Thankfully episode 5 is gonna be mythology. More of those please!
Keep up the great reviews beauty!
I’m going to respectfully disagree with your opinion of this episode. I thought it was fantastic. The social commentary was on point as Darin Morgan’s episodes always are. And it was hilarious as ever!
The Gillian clip
ruclips.net/video/UNBTZ8hWV4E/видео.html
Can i split it
The "bing bing" thing is a Trump meme
Mark Grant chill. Don't take it so serious, enjoy the ride!!
No it's a Gillian thing, she said it at the New York comic con
Mark Grant So salty.
I don't even watch the X-Files but your reviews are just so funny!
cheers
