A Herculean performance of one of Gershwin's most demanding compositions with the orchestration transcribed and condensed for solo piano - Bravo! It was a pleasure to hear it in again in St John the Evangelist's Church, Oxford on Saturday. You deserved your after-performance beers in the Fir Tree !
Years ago, living in Northern Michigan, I developed a list of 'musical loves' I heard over Interlaken Public Radio. Forgotten, I just rediscovered that list last week! Listening to this fine recording shows me why I included it on the list. Thanks so much!
I echo the comments by mrkip w 3 years ago and just wish that some, maybe not all, of your arrangements / transcriptions on Gershwin's works can be for sale. Your rendition of his works is simply impeccable, and my favourites of which are Rhapsody in Blue, Sweet and lowdown, Do Do Do, I Got Rhythm 1931 performance etc, to name a few.
I see it on the page and I hear it in my headphones, but it's so stunning. Virtuoso performance, now I realize what it means! It must have been a mountain to climb this, yet it's so clear and sparkling. Gershwin smiles from his heaven, no doubt.
Stunning virtuoso performance. I suspect Gershwin and Levant would have loved this. Bravo!
Great Transcription!!!
Lacks Gershwin lyricism.
Absolutely stunning. I love your talent, Gibbons.
Outstanding Arrangement and Performance. Thank you. Out.
Are any of your arrangements for sale? I can't sit down and play from the two-piano version of this, but might be able to manage a page here and there of a solo one. Particularly fond of your Catfish Row.
Wonderful! Thanks!!
Great performance! What a difficult piece to play!
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this arrangement?
:)
This piece almost has a latin feel---you can hear how it led into the Cuban Overture. that being said, there's a nervousness to this piece that makes it less alluring and immediate then Rhapsody in blue. The main theme is definitely a derivative of Rhapsody in Blue, but it lacks the charm of the former. Its more harmonically complex, but its not as good of music, that's for sure.
