Monica sure has forgotten that Alan was a happy father until SHE tried to pass THEIR son off as Rick Webbers! That's where the troubles began. Alan's guilt was in that he admitted long ago to AJ that he favored Jason. First, because Jason wanted to be a doctor before his accident. Second, because Alan never forgot the pain of Monica passing AJ off on her adulterous lover. But, at least Alan admitted being a "rotten parent." Monica is a total hypocrite in this scene.

Go Monica! Alan needed to be put in his place, and Monica is just the one to do it.

How could Alan's pain and grief go away with the lies. I hope the producers do right by the AJ character in 2013. Fact is, Michael IS AJ's son. Not Sonny and not Jason's. Also, it seems to me - viewing the show - Alan tried to make things right with Jason - but Jason refused and ran back to Sonny. Being a parent sucks sometimes - and the writers captured that - but they tried to destroy the Alan character in the 90's and beyond. Some of it was interesting - some jumped the shark.

Alan said he was the only one who ever loved AJ, but during the AJ drinking storyline before the accident and afterward, Alan frequently criticized Monica for being too soft on AJ. He was the one who was hard on him and showed him little love.
The roots of AJ’s problems go way back. Before Michael, before the accident. He began drinking when he was 12. The entire Quartermaine family contributed to it by not being consistent. They would crack down on him and then let him get away with anything.
And it was not just the drinking. A J was sneaky, conniving, and convinced that the rules don’t apply to him. In one episode, he is seen talking to a friend on three phone and offering to teach him how to manipulate his parents.
A J was one of those people who want to be good, but their own weakness and selfishness always gets in their way. Just like he loved and admired Jason , but his resentment and jealousy kept him from ever fully accepting him.
Fans complain how the writers “destroyed “ AJ’s character. Actually, they stayed pretty much true to the early development of his character. What happened with him was the natural progression of his character. Let face it, he lost his son. But he was not abducted or killed. He was taken away by his own mother.
This has happened to countless fathers. It is not always fair, but most fathers find a way to deal with it and find a way to make peace with the mother and be a part of his child’s life.
AJ could not do that. Mainly because his Quartermaine pride and his own ego would not allow him to accept that he had lost. He spent his life determined to get Michael back. He did some pretty despicable things trying to accomplish it, things much worse than anything Carly, Jason, or Sonny did.
Jason did not start out to steal AJ’s son. He was just trying to keep AJ from stealing Carly’s baby from her. He even asked Carly if AJ shouldn’t have a chance to take care of him when she said she couldn’t.
But she convinced Jason that If AJ ever got ahold of him, she would never get him back. So he promised to take care of him until Carly returned. He had every intention of withdrawing from the situation when she came back.
But as time went on, he became appalled by the Quartermaines’ behavior.
When they tried to kidnap Michael, while believing he was Jason’s son, that was the last straw.
After that, he felt that Michael deserved better than to be raised in that house by people who treated each other like they did.
Jason knew nothing about babies. When he undertook the job of caring for Michael, he thought it just entailed taking care of his physical needs and keeping him safe.
He did not know how babies steal your heart and take all the love you have to give.
    But he soon learned.
And the more he came to love Michael, the more he became convinced that he did not belong with the Quartermaines.

Bull. "Most fathers find a way to deal with it and find a way to make peace with the mother and be a part of his child’s life." In this way, AJ was like most fathers.
Most mothers compromise on some level. CARLY "could not do that" so Michael was lost to AJ, "mainly because" Michael was in the custody of mobsters so AJ spent his life determined to get Michael out of danger. He did some pretty despicable things trying to accomplish it, but Carly, Jason, and Sonny totally eclipsed AJ in that department, leaving PC strewn with corpses, blood running in the streets, filling PC cemetery to capacity, since AJ would not resort to using a deadly weapon until the bitter end.
I hope you like my paragraph structure. What do you think of my hyperbole?
