      Nah that’s midwestern he’s from Nebraska people tend to confuse that with a southern accent though but it’s more of an Iowa/dakotas/Wyoming drawl as Midwest as it gets

What makes it weird is that they are n.w. of Ohio.. yet the folks in Ohio don't have that drawl.. it's weird lol

I have traveled a bit, and while I could easily understand those with an Irish accent, I'll admit I couldn't understand the Highland or Northern English of some folks in Britain, but that is likely due to a lack of familiarity with the speech patterns and local dialects.

      Now he does. If you listen to some of his early stand-up he really didn't. I think he's just done it for so long and knows how jarring it is to fans that he's picked it up somewhat in everyday conversation. He spent most of his early life in Florida. Florida is not usually known for 'twang'.

      You could tell just by the way he pronounced the word "Florida." Having lived for many years in Upstate South Carolina, I most often hear it pronounced "Flah-a-da."

    I live in Georgia and can say that it’s pretty rare to find people who speak with an accent as exaggerated as his performing accent, to me his normal accent still sounds quite southern and truthfully it sounds more like someone you might actually meet in here in the south.

      Well he spent his early childhood in Nebraska, went to high school in Florida, had roommates in college from Texas and Georgia, and worked in Omaha, Kansas City, and Orlando during the first part of his career (thanks, Wikipedia!). So that's not surprising.

      His natural voice is NOT southern. He's from Nebraska. He naturally has a midwestern accent and if you watch his work in the 1980s, you hear this much more clearly. He's relaxing his voice more in the interview.

Nebraska isn't really north or south and if he spent time in Georgia and Florida then that makes sense.. I'm a southerner and I always knew his voice was exaggerated during stand up... he's hilarious and very talented

      Quite a few people hang out with George Lopez.       It does and my dad was from Nebraska and moved to north Georgia in the early 60s until he died last year and the combo of the two accents developed into a somewhat midland accent . Funny thing is Dalton Ga where his roommate was from is just 15 minutes down the road from us

      I've done a lot of online gaming with people from MANY different countries and I tend to code switch. It's awkward when someone thinks I'm making fun of them since it's not intentional, so I'm a bit more aware of it.

      I'm a fifth generation, Scotch-Irish, Missouri Ozarks hillbilly. We all sound like that. We're not Southern, more of a country backwoods accent. I didn't know I had an accent until I went away to college.

    I really thought the comment section would be full of people saying "oh yeah, that's how it works for me too". I didn't realise it was so rare to pick up accents quickly. From my perspective it is just natural to speak like those around you.

      I've experienced the same thing, when I was a preteen I went to Germany to visit my family a lot and I'd end up speaking like my cousin who spoke English with a thick accent even though I was raised in the US. And I didn't even intend to.

      I actually thought it was his real accent too a few years back when I was a little kid.. I could tell it was exaggerated a little bit but I thought that was really his accent (some people here exaggerate a little too).. I didn't think much of it, since that's the way most people actually talk around here where I live... (Eastern Tennessee).. I thought he was just a typical hillbilly from Georgia or Tn.

      This is true, I was backpacking in nz for awhile and made some English friends and kiwi friends after two weeks a few drinks in me and I talked just like them. I literally would try to stop and I couldn't. The brain is so interesting lol.

    If you grew up in the South you'll notice him slip up once in awhile and throw out a word or syllable that gives him away. I knew he wasn't a real Southerner the first time I saw him, but he's still hilarious and his Southern accent is very good.

    Anyone calling him a "liar" or a "fake", keep in mind that until recently the majority of stand-ups were playing some kind of character. George Carlin used to do characters. Rodney Dangerfield, Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Roseanne, Steven Wright, Mitch Hedberg, Dennis Leary, etc, etc, etc, were all doing some kind of character. It's NOT unique to Larry The Cable Guy.

    Always heard my moms southern accent get thicker when she was on the phone to her sisters. We lived in Michigan, she was born and raised in Charleston SC. I picked up a little of it from her and when I’d go visit down south. It’s a pretty normal thing.

    I can still hear a southern accent. It's not as heavy as we have in Appalachia, but it's there. My family is all bluegrass musicians. It goes back generations. One thing that shocks people is our accents get heavier when we sing. No idea why. I've heard people tell real southern men that they are using a fake accent to sing. It just is what it is. Obviously Larry exaggerates it for comedic effect.

    People think I'm from Alabama, I picked up an accent somehow while in the Navy. I dunno how the accent is for people from Alabama but I guess it's similar. I'm also asian, so there's that too, ain't really seen much of that myself. I like to use an extra thick accent just to mess with people, I think it's hilarious seeing their reaction.

      People say I’m from Alabama probably because I’m from Alabama but I also live in Alabama but was born in Mississippi but live in Alabama but only lived in Mississippi as a baby so I live in Alabama and I’m from Alabama I was raised in Alabama I was born in Mississippi but only stayed there as a baby but I grew up in Alabama and here I sit in Alabama still living in Alabama texting this comment in Alabama

The fact his act is so authentically Southern and his jokes often have interesting twists to them that speak to that type of demographic, is, indeed, brilliant.     I remember when Larry used to call into our local radio station in Florida. He used to crack us up back then and couldn’t wait for him to call in. He then started crank calling daily and he grew into a celebrity. He’s still absolutely hysterical!
