I'd expected a fairly mundane weekend but how wrong I was.
On the Saturday....
Firstly while waiting for the Blue Pullman at Carlisle, 37510 Orion appeared with a couple of barrier wagons en route from a trip to Inverness running south to Derby.
Trains on the Cumbrian Coast are only running to Whitehaven or Sellafield. Eskmeals viaduct south of Ravenglass is being re-decked. Closed for 2 weeks.
The Blue Pullman was its usual classy self. Different locos - if nothing else check which Class 43s are on the set as they tend to be swapped around!
As well as at the Citadel, I went out on the Tyne Valley line to Brampton Fell where there's a long open stretch between the sharp curves - the line was planned in the 1820s as an horse worked line!
On the Sunday ....
Firstly there was an engineering train heading from Barrow in Furness (nominally Ulverston) to Carlisle Yard. Network Rail have been messing about with track in Barrow's carriage sidings.
Then of course there was the Waverley behind Tangmere. And Tangmere did sound rough. A loud banging noise echoed across the platform which actually shook!
An amusing thing - when the stock were ready to head out to Upperby for servicing etc. the signallers wrongly routed it - it took the driver a few seconds to realise before passing the relevant signal.
The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.

We’re on holiday at Langwathby with the S&C visible from our cottage. Saw Tangmere on Sunday in both directions plus the blue Pullman on the 7th.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways still here! It’s been good so far. No steam trains today - there’s IZ47 passing tomorrow which might be a charter. Locomotive services is the operator. Passes us around 16:16. We’ll see!
1Z47 is Sir Nigel Gresley on the Fellsman - Crewe - Carlisle over S&C both ways. Meanwhile I'll be on 1E65 heading to Settle lol

I've got a soft spot for 2nd gen DMU/EMUs. Why oh why didn't they build more of them in order to spare us the dacades-lomg trauma of the Pacers?
19:20 onwards - not sure we've seen that shot of the Pullman before?
Hats off the the driver of the WCR 47 for spotting the signalling error.
For a moment there I thought Tangmere was only going to slip ever so slightly....

The coaches would be used as barrier wagons - presumably they can be fitted or have fitted with the Multiple Unit type couplers (Deliner?).
The final location has been used before but for LNER diversions.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Yes, I recognise the location, but not when the Pullman is in the frame.
Tangmere has worn con rod bearings. The sound is the con rod dropping when the loco is moving but 'free wheeling' with no power or brakes. Often heard on large and small freight locomotives sometimes from both sides the con rods would 'ring' as trains idle to a stop, Short term add grease. Overnight change. Spinning the wheels is no help. Get Bert Lancaster on the job? Was Papa Bull driving?
That was my thought - heard on recordings from the 60s.
Nice to see the blue pullman on the way to Newcastle. I thought Tangmere sounded a bit rough just before your caption appeared. So much use recently and being dragged that day could of done something. Good thing the driver was alert, passing a signal with a wrong route is regarded as passing a signal at danger.
He had to pass a signal at green before hitting the one wrongly set. He stopped at the earlier one (the one with the aspects set horizontally on P1).

@@LeslieGilpinRailways Passing a green on P1 was OK. The wrongly routed one is where the problem lies for him. The reason it is regarded as passing a danger signal is the potential for an accident. The speed limit is 10mph to Maryport and to Upperby higher, not sure what though. I found this out after a signalman forgot he had left a junction set for the branch line, the next train got a red which cleared to green with a feather on approach, the driver had not noticed the wrong route was set and accelerated to around 55mph at the 45mph junction the train lurched onto the branch. The signalman got a warning to be more careful but the driver got taken off duty for failing to observe the signal and his record book blotted.
When is there a time when there is not 19 railtours in Carlisle on the same day

Does anyone know why a loco, running light should have more stringent speed limits than when pulling a load?
Surprisingly they usually depend on the train brakes to add braking power.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Blimey, is that the reason. I'd never have imagined that a loco's brakes would be anything other than powerful......
