Wow, I cant believe how long I've had my HD 500. I feel like I'm just getting started with it. I don't need the latest and greatest, I just need to get the most I can out of what I have.
Hi Keith, Thank you for purchasing my patches. The patches in this video are not in any bundle of mine. These were to show how to program the patches in this video yourself. Thank you again Keith.
Glenn that was very good. Brief but clear and helpful. I got one of these a few years ago and updated it online, and I still think it's a great kit. Thanks for your help
Thank you for posting this very comprehensive look at the Line 6 HD500. I have heard that a lot of folks find using this unit to be challenging. This review really shows beyond just sounds, you do a great job of getting under the hood here, Glenn. Thank you for posting this; once a person watches you create some of your own presets, it becomes very clear the methodology of how the Line 6 programming works. Cheers, man!
I just bought my HD 500, and its been a couple of days, and your videos just helped me so much, I think I have learnt quite a lot about this in such less time. Thanks, keep making such videos!!!!!
this video and your other one helped me so much with my hd500. this pedal does soooooooo much but it is not easy to wrap my head around the user manuals. i just spent an hour setting FX to the expression pedal, assigning them to the stomp pedals and just happily playing around with everything after watching only the first half of this video. thanks a ton man. you opened up so much of the pedal's potential to me.
This guy really knows his sh#t. Thanks for your help a few weeks ago. Its really important that anyone buying this to upgrade the firmware to the 1.31 on the line6 site right away. And expierment with the output settings to fine tune it to your amp. Or your gonna spend days on end thinking you bought a $500 tuning pedal. The pod hd500 really is awesome once you get the hang of it.
AS A new HD500 user/owner,your videos have been very helpful Glenn! I really enjoy your sound and playing by the way! Wishing you all the best! Thanks man!
I used one of your patches in church last night and got many compliments over the tone that was coming forth. Thanks Bro! It's guys like you that help us learn more of the technical side. The hd500 looked a little daunting to me when I first pulled it out of the box. you definitely simplify the learning curve. Love the Variax by the way!!!!
Nice video Glenn. I have had my POD HD500 for a few days and just love it. For new users, there is a learning curve so don't expect to sit down and everything sound the way you want with this right off. I am learning something every time I sit down and ask questions or watch videos or just jam/edit. Thanks again Glenn.
I have an HD500 arriving tomorrow, so I've been taking a look at some tips. I love how you assigned the delay parameters to the expression pedal to essentially make it selectively delay certain phrases - and that you're controlling multiple parameters with the expression pedal. Great tips in this video! Thanks!
More Video's PLEASE!!!! Had my HD 500 for a week now and love it. I move up from the X3 live and this baby's tone is much better. I like how you present your videos...I have watched it several times now and its helped me get more familiar with my HD. Great pick'n Glenn!!! :)
I should be getting mine in about 2 weeks. Largely thanks to this video. I love the sound of it. I can't wait, I'm literally all giddy with excitement.
The sound is routed back to the POD so if your studio monitors are connected to the POD then yes you will hear sound. The POD becomes the "sound card" for your computer when it is connected to the computer via USB.
Hey Glenn. Thanks so much for making these tutorials. I bought the HD500 a few weeks ago and have had a nightmare of a time trying to make sense of it. You're vid's are awesome. Thansk.
And thank you too, Glenn. Based on the strength of your video above, I upgraded my last generation unit this afternoon. Your video made up my mind to make the jump to the HD500 from the POD 3X Live. I am sure I'll be referring to your video as I get into using this great floorboard unit. You should do trade shows for Line 6! Cheers!
The HD500 can be used in two modes, one uses the 1 2 3 & 4 switches as presets, the top row can trigger on or off different FX on each one of those preset. The other mode is using it like a big pedal board of individual stomps where each switch 1 through 8 can each be assigned a different effect. Using it like this you can still change presets but there is an extra step to change that preset. I think that's what you wanted to know.
Hey Glenn, I bought a Pod HD500 Yesterday and took it straight to rehearsal. dialled in my cool metal tones over 4 patches... I love this thing. took me 5 minutes of foolin about to get a useable sound (including time to bugger about with all the totally mental effects). Got it home and put the software on my computer so useable. it's amazing! thanks for all the videos and your honest answer to my questions.
Cool patches. Thanks for your tutorial. Its really helped me with understanding a complicated piece of equipt and how to set up patches. This video clip was so easy to learn off. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us who have know idea how to use it.Ive had this peddle sitting in the 2 hard basket in my room for over a year. Damn wot a waste of a year! Thanks once again. Much appreciated.
Hey Glenn, These videos are tremendous. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the HD500. It sounds f'n phenomenal! Can't wait to get a hold of one for my recordings.
I love your fingerpicking style, you look like a very experienced and talented musician to me. Bought the HD500 a couple of months ago and I'm still trying to figure it out! I appreciate the insights you shared in this video, I was inspired; as soon as I'm back home I'll try and implement something. Kudos to you :)
The more videos I watch of you the more and more I respect you as a player and think you're a genius musician. I'm thinking about selling my Eleven rack for an HD500.
I found that dialing in a sound with this pedal is finding the right blend of the amp and distortion/overdrive pedal you choose. Blend their distortion levels and at the eq you like and boost or cut frequencies.
Great video! I just the HD500 and this video really helped me create some great sounds! Thanks for posting Glenn, your videos have helped me great deal.
I'm dying to get one of these bad boys. Especially after this vid, this thing has been doggin my head for a while and the editing is whats been complicating my choice. But seeing how simple that is, i'm all for it. Cheers man.
I agree with you. I now keep all the amps at the rehearsal studio and run my HD500 through a pair of Event Precision 8's + sub in my house and it sounds awesome. Can practice at any volume with great tone.
Hi Glenn, I just wanted to give respect to your playing technique. I've never seen anybody use a thumb pick before when playing rock. There are too many cloned guitar players on RUclips and it's so cool to see somebody break away from the norm and do their own thing and make it sound awesome.
Dang it, I was perfectly happy with my XT bean until I saw this video. Combine the dual tones you talked about and especially using the exp pedal to adjust various settings on the fly and I had to buy a 500. Congratulations. My wife hates you but don't worry, I still love you man.
Hey just wanted to say thanks for the videos on these products. I've actually got the HD bean heading my way as we speak so I've be researching the product line as much as I can. It's just going to be for direct recording into my computer, and for fun since I don't stand a chance of making anything for drum backing tracks. Thanks!
I am very very happy that I purchased the HD500... in fact, this video was one of the inspirations! I just uploaded a video showing several rock/metal patches I have created. I think you may like them, as I have been playing guitar for 29 years and am very serious about getting good 80s style tones :) Rock on!
Thanks for demoing with a Variax. I got an old Variax 600 and was thinking of getting a HD500 to use in conjunction with the Variax. Sounds really good.
@tony93666 Yes Tony the HD's are very limited as far as amp models compared to the X3. You do however have some high gain amps in the HD's that are very good. You ought to check them out here on YT.
You can do that using the Controller Assigns. Watch the video around 7:28 where I show this section. Use the Amp controller assign and set it to Gain and Controller1
@extremevideopro I should just correct that there is only a Lag on the Nova system if you are in 'pedal' mode, this is where you have to tap and hold the pedal to switch preset (as it is a dual action switch), if you use the Nova in 'preset' mode or with a G-switch or midi pedal there is no lag at all. But in answer to the other question, remember that the Nova has no amp modelling, it is only effects, therefore the HD-500 is probably more suitable. Nice demo Glenn!!
Glen gotta tell ya,I bought a pod hd 500 mainly cause of your videos,(keep 'em commin) Didn't even try it in the store just flat out bought one and I love it.Thanks for all your help. Also you look like robin williams..... : P
@extremevideopro Thanks man! Glad you liked it, :) Yeah i mainly play with headphones now, but they kinda hurt after wearing them for a while, haha plus i bet with a good set of monitors it would sound better! Those KRK ones look awesome, I think i'll get some......thanks again bro you have helped me so much with your videos! You're an amazing musician!
Hey Glenn, I just discovered your videos and I'm impressed. You have a lot of knowledge on patches and effects. Your technique is awesome with your thumb picking. I've loved Patrick Simmons thumb style for years. I play a Fat Strat and ES- 335 through a 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb with a Alesis Quadraverb GT. Your patches are full and distinctive, great work. I might switch to the POD HD500X. Steve Hayes
@itaybryt no bother. I enjoy talking with everyone here and I thank all of you for your support of my channel and my music. If I don't answer some of the questions it's simply because I don't have an answer. I also like it when other people answer some of the questions on my videos. Cheers
@itaybryt I have another rig with an Boss GT-10 and an Line6 M9 with some other analog pedals and it too sounds good on all of my tube amps, Marshall, Dr. Z Traynor, etc. The digital FX modelers when used with traditional analog pedals are a very good match.
I like the editing software for the Pod HD500 but i was not able to figure out how to set up a dual tone on the pc. I was surprised at how easy it was to set up a dual tone on the unit itself.
@extremevideopro As soon as I read this I thought of a Wolfgang Special. I always thought those looked great in trans purple. I had a Wolfgang archtop in trans red and I regret selling it more than any guitar I've had! By the way.. this is my first comment on your stuff and as a player of almost 20 years I have to say that you are what youtube is ALL about. I love the fact that you are doing these informational/tutorial videos. I'm a Line 6 Vetta II user and on fence about X3 or HD500.
@extremevideopro No worries. The Nova is a great unit, although could have been amazing, but you have to look at it's price point and realise that all the things you might really want are on the G-System. But view similarly to something like the Line 6 M series, I think it makes sense. The Nova also has the TC sound, which some like (as it is very pristine) and some don't. Keep up the good work!! All the best!
@lightb4sound Thanks bro, wow I didn't know that about the Nova System. I had a chance to get one a while back for very cheap but when I went to try it out and I got that lag I was turned off. The guy must have had it in pedal mode and I didn't know enuff about it to say anything LOL.. OH well, thanks for clearing that up for us.
Part two. If running the POD into an amp, I'm assuming you can use just one of the POD's outputs and it will simply be in mono. That is, you won't lose one half (or side) of your stereo mix.
@leonar239 You can use it with any amp. I have used it with an old Marshall Combo and it sounded pretty good. I also hook it up to my surround sound system through the spdif out. Sounds great through my big speakers with 15in subs.
@sonicthehedgehogxp That's from my FUSION III album. It's called "Let It Ride". That album is a mix of Jazz Fusion/Funk & Progressive Rock. All Instrumental.
@extremevideopro I ordered a Pod HD500 as soon as I could. Effects were way better then my X3 Live. However, I find that the high gain amp modeling is actually better on the X3 Live. Although, the low/mid gain stuff is a bit more depth to it on the HD. I ended up returning my HD and keeping my X3. However, ever since I got my GSP1101 and started using it with cab impulses (via the beta update) I now rarely use my X3 at all.
@dmdark If the HD500 is connected properly via USB and you have downloaded all of the software the sound won't come out of your computer speakers. The audio is fed back into the POD so you would use headphones on the POD or connect your speakers to the POD outputs. That's how it works. If you are using recording software then the sound would come out of your speakers from the software. Got it??
Wow, I cant believe how long I've had my HD 500. I feel like I'm just getting started with it. I don't need the latest and greatest, I just need to get the most I can out of what I have.
Hi Keith, Thank you for purchasing my patches. The patches in this video are not in any bundle of mine. These were to show how to program the patches in this video yourself. Thank you again Keith.

I just discover your channel and you have THE BEST reviews !
Really well done, lot of useful information, no blabla, no BS... Good Job.
Sound quality wise they are both very good. They both have the strength's & weaknesses as far as quality goes.
It's in the system settings. You can either choose ABCD or 5-8. In the 5-8 setting all buttons can be programmed for turning on FX.
Nice video Glenn. I have had my POD HD500 for a few days and just love it. For new users, there is a learning curve so don't expect to sit down and everything sound the way you want with this right off. Hi Glenn!
I from Russia, and I just ordered POD HD500.
Thanx for your video, the clean tone with delay is awesome!
Hey Glenn. Thanks so much for making these tutorials. I bought the HD500 a few weeks ago and have had a nightmare of a time trying to make sense of it. You're vid's are awesome. Thansk.
I was so overwhelmed by this pedal to begin with, but thanks to your video, I actually feel like I know what I'm doing now. thank you!
I just ordered an HD500 (it should be arriving in a few days) and this video was very valuable. Thanks for posting!
Great job Glenn! The most comprehensive and great sounding demo on HD 500 so far.
I use that 20ms trick frequently on my X3L.
And thank you too, Glenn. Based on the strength of your video above, I upgraded my last generation unit this afternoon. Your video made up my mind to make the jump to the HD500 from the POD 3X Live. My opinion is that I like both of them very much and I use both on a regular basis. You can't go wrong with either choice.
thank you Glenn you really show what that pedal can do , i like the thumb technique and you explain in detail how to work the pod
Hey Glenn, I bought a Pod HD500 Yesterday and took it straight to rehearsal. dialled in my cool metal tones over 4 patches... Cool sound and great level of play. Particularly unusual and at the same time cool is the method of sound extraction with a pick with a claw.
Dude! Thank you so much for this. I just (after weeks of deliberation) bought mine today, and this has been so helpful.
Having just got an hd500 yesterday this video has helped me hugely!!! Thanks
Glenn you HAVE TO STOP!! Every time you show something new I buy it!! lol! Thanks for all your hard work! Blessings man! Eric! OutshineBand
Hey Glenn,
These videos are tremendous. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the HD500. It sounds f'n phenomenal! Can't wait to get a hold of one for my recordings.

I'm thinking about selling my Eleven rack for an HD500.
Great videos and sick playing dude! Your vids are really helpful to listen to these units at their best,
Fastest thumb in the States? Think so! Nice and proffesional video as always! Thank you Glenn!
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
I found that dialing in a sound with this pedal is finding the right blend of the amp and distortion/overdrive pedal you choose. Blend their distortion levels and at the eq you like and boost or cut frequencies.
I just got one, I got the DT25 and its AWESOME! Simple but with plenty of tones and options. Highly recommended
@stephenpconrad These were made for direct recording. They probably would work for live use with just a little bit of tweaking.
Great video! I just the HD500 and this video really helped me create some great sounds! Thanks for posting Glenn, your videos have helped me great deal.
@AlofD You're welcome. I'm glad it worked out for you.
@robsangg Yes the HD500 does power the Variax, no batteries needed.
Glenn, Love the skills...and tones ... love to hear you play. God Bless.
Awesome as usual, Glenn! Great guitarist and fantastic speaker! Thanks!
I'm dying to get one of these bad boys. Especially after this vid, this thing has been doggin my head for a while and the editing is whats been complicating my choice. But seeing how simple that is, i'm all for it. Cheers man.

Im really happy you like it. I havn't used the gear alot yet, and since this really isnt a plug n' play device i still have alot of tweaking to do :)
Thank you. PodHD500 Custom Artist Patches to be released soon. Stay tuned.
I have done several Line6 POD demos', probably about 15 or so. I only used the Variax on 2 of them.
@kennykanowski Yes you should be able to switch the channels on the JVM with MIDI from the HD500
That delay trick was great. I'll be sure to try it if I get one of these
Hey just wanted to say thanks for the videos on these products. I've actually got the HD bean heading my way as we speak so I've be researching the product line as much as I can. It's just going to be for direct recording into my computer, and for fun since I don't stand a chance of making anything for drum backing tracks.
Thanks!
They both work very well with 4CM.
Yes it's going straight into my computer audio interface. You could use the USB to record also but I just use the analog L&R outputs.
thanks for the info on the pod HD500 that was the best hope we could get some more soon have a bless day
Nice video man!! learnt a lot just in a few minutes :) I just got my HD500x this Monday and loving everything about it.
@pkeshish You're welcome. Thanks for watching
Your bids are amazing
So informative and detailed
Great playing and tones
Nice work. Looking forward to trying out your patches. Much gratitude for this really helpful video.
@imac299 It's a variax 700 from line 6, a modeling guitar, those models didn't use pickups, the new JTV models have both pickups and modeling.
I am very very happy that I purchased the HD500... in fact, this video was one of the inspirations! I just uploaded a video showing several rock/metal patches I have created. I think you may like them, as I have been playing guitar for 29 years and am very serious about getting good 80s style tones :) Rock on!

Line 6, Boss, and all other multi fx modelling companies should hire you to do their "how to" and "tips & tricks" videos.
Check your output settings. If you are going right into your computer it should be set to Studio/Direct
Glen gotta tell ya,I bought a pod hd 500 mainly cause of your videos,(keep 'em commin) Didn't even try it in the store just flat out bought one and I love it.Thanks for all your help. Also you look like robin williams..... : P
Excellent video!! Best hd500 tutorial i've seen.
@livio1396 Yes the HD500 would be a great upgrade. That's true yo don't get as many amp models but the ones you get are very very good.
I think in the HD500 it was all in the output mode and the focus EQ settings. I used Stack/Return or something like that
Hey Glenn, I just discovered your videos and I'm impressed. Steve Hayes
Thanks.
You do a great job of explaining things.
Your a great help and you have a great ear for tone.
@itaybryt no bother. I enjoy talking with everyone here and I thank all of you for your support of my channel and my music. If I don't answer some of the questions it's simply because I don't have an answer. I also like it when other people answer some of the questions on my videos. Cheers
I love the way u play with the thumb alone
Yes the GT-100 does have the dual tone feature
Awesome demo here.. I'm sold on the POD HD now..
I was surprised at how easy it was to set up a dual tone on the unit itself.
oh cool. thanks for the tip; i just placed an order for HD500, so every bit of knowledge is very welcome. thanks!
@extremevideopro As soon as I read this I thought of a Wolfgang Special. I always thought those looked great in trans purple. I had a Wolfgang archtop in trans red and I regret selling it more than any guitar I've had!

The guy must have had it in pedal mode and I didn't know enuff about it to say anything LOL.. OH well, thanks for clearing that up for us.
That's a Line6 Variax. The pickups are in the bridge.
a whole mini series on the pod hd 500 would be awesome!!!
Niiiiiice tones!the best on youtube!!
thank you for sharing!!!
Part two. If running the POD into an amp, I'm assuming you can use just one of the POD's outputs and it will simply be in mono. That is, you won't lose one half (or side) of your stereo mix.

The audio is fed back into the POD so you would use headphones on the POD or connect your speakers to the POD outputs. That's how it works. If you are using recording software then the sound would come out of your speakers from the software. Got it??
