“For years they coded our bigotry to make all lesbian characters on screen exclusively crazy or villainous.” And now we’re all just attracted to villains.
Lol that might explain it. I didn’t realise I was bi for a long time (I thought all women were just a bit into other women) and now I find myself attracted to “scary” women. Is she intimidating? Yes? I’m there lol
Ok, but why is this so true😂😂😂 Villains are ALWAYS hotter than the hero to me
and literal monsters are our equivalent of spirit animals. babadook anyone?

Honestly yeah,,,,
If they can make a movie about a bee and human falling in love they can at least give gay ppl some rep.
Bee movie stands on its own as a cinematic masterpiece
Oh my your comment really made me laugh ! Bee movie, cringiest story EVER

"He's gay for god sake! Just say he's gay. This is clearly a story about him being gay. Stop with the magic powers!" Looks at BBC Merlin writers!
Came down here to say *exactly this.* That show was so gay. So very, very gay. Canonically-soulmates kind of gay.
im literally in the middle of rewatching it and there is literally nothing heterosexual about it whatsoever
My thoughts exactly
I was thinking of Batwoman.
Also Frozen
Makes me think of X-Men. "Have you tried... not being a mutant?"
Also Buffy's mum when she finds out her daughter's a slayer. "Have you tried not being a slayer?" and "It's because you don't have a strong father figures, isn't it?"
Supposedly, the X-Men was written purposely to be an analog to homosexuality.
Besides playing up universal tropes about being an outsider looking to "fit in", the whole parallel to coming out of the gay closet was intentional.
While I could definitely see that, I always thought the X-Men and a lot of Marvel heroes were coded to be Jewish, since Kirby and Lee were both Jewish and Magneto is even canonically Jewish. They could all be LGBTQ+ Jews, but I think the being Jewish is also part of it because to an anti-semite, you can't stop being a Jew and a lot of these characters and stories were written in the shadow of the Holocaust.
@@rachelk7784 Actually Stan Lee was very inspired by Civil Rights in general. If you watch his interviews about the subject he says very explicitly so
@@frenchfriar Although then I think, isn't it a universal thing to want to fit in, especially in youth. I don't see a point in categorizing every "i don't fit in" as a solely gay experience.
"Can't just let bisexuals live their lives, can you?" As a bi woman, I feel this in my bones. People equate bisexual with promiscuous. I've worried when coming out to people that they will make this assumption.
I feel you. Replace bi with pan and you have my life.
I'm pan and poly. The comments aren't fun... But honestly, I know who I am and what I'm about and the people who want to assume whatever can do so if it makes them happy, just keep it out of my face please :P
While I know this is definitely a frustrating stereotype, I also want to point out that being promiscuous (in the sense of having many partners, not in the sense of being more likely to not be loyal to your partner) is also not a bad thing! All people should be able to explore their sexuality to the fullest, providing they do it safely, consensually and aren't hurting anyone or anything.
Seriously tho... or all the "just pick a gender" comments or "you're actually just gay" comments
In Germany, at least, there seems to be an upside to being bi. It is believed to be connected to people who are artists, so much that people expect great artists to be bi. And if you come out as bi, people may very well understand it as proof that you are an "artist soul". It is seen as just "normal" enough to fit into heterosexual society, yet just that bit "exotic" to make you interesting.

She TRULY is. I really can’t picture her with a dude, especially Drakken. Or even when she was Junior Junior’s teacher. Man, she is just plain show stopping, never before seen, amazing, unique! Whenever she came on the seen, my eyes were on her.
Since the racist Hays Code policies and the movie Gilda were mentioned:
"Fun" Fact: The lead actress of that movie, 40s icon Rita Hayworth, was born of Half White, Half Hispanic descent; but Hollywood Executives literally made her get Cosmetic Surgery to change her facial features to make her look more white. Her famous red hair was also artificial, she was born a brunette, but they made her become a ginger to complete her transformation.
Which is just really messed up and deserves to be talked about more.
Christopher Davis yeah I saw picture of her before her transformation with her dark hair, olive skin, and unibrow. I think it was a picture of her during her dance studies.
Wow! I never knew this...
They LAZERED OFF HER HAIRLINE. That was one fact I remembered from a spot on the Western channel years ago. Fucking ghoulish.
I did not know that. Thank you!
She was sadly abused by her father and in later years had Alzheimer's
She was stunning in Gilda.
This reminds me heavily of Luca. As a queer person I absolutely loved the film, but disney holds that it’s “not gay” even though there’s an obvious coming out scene and a close young relationship.
Ursula was actually inspired by drag queen sensation Divine
yesss I was going to say the same thing!
I love Ursula so much. She is a business owner, does her own legal paperwork, cares for her employees, was probably kicked out of her original position because of gender politics (we never know exactly why Triton kicked her out, but WE know)
Which is why I am so upset she is going to be played by Amy Schumer in the Live Action Version....where will the sass be? I was expecting evil slaying SASSINESS. She seems so unfit for the role.

One of my favorite gay characters is Thomas from Downton Abbey. He started out as just the "gay villain" stereotype, but throughout the series we see different sides of him and he becomes more sympathetic. He and O'Brien brought out the worst in each other, and once she left I liked him much more. He's jaded and has a chip on his shoulder, but most people in his position would, too. By the end of the series, he was one of my favorite characters and I loved his friendship with George & Sybbie.
Thomas is legitimately one of the best fictional characters ever created, and his character arc was AMAZING!!! I loved the show overall but he made it ten times better and I could re-watch it only for him. Despite being the "villain" character he was probably the most sympathetic one and I kept feeling such an urge to just hug that poor man
When they all let him stay as a servant even though he was gay I CRIED SO HARD I WAS LIKE, WOW THEY LOVE HIM AHHAHAUE
Briefly wondered if this was going to be about LGBT programmers
Me too lol

Am I really a trans girl if I can't code?!
That’s what I thought!
I came here for it
I'm with Jessica - a villain can only "just happen to be" gay (or a member of any marginalized community really) without it coming off as bigoted if there are *also* non-villanous gay characters.
In my own works I only make the villain a minority if my main character is the same minority or if at least four other prominent positive characters are.
Legend's Warble Sounds like a solid guideline.
Isn't that what happens in DEBS?
@@legendswarble2845 This is like a new Bechdel test. Love it
But only like a main supporting role. Too many tv shows and movies have a queer villain and then say “they’re just gay, just like Johnny from episode three! Remember?” When really, He said something offensively stereotypical and hit on the main hero for two seconds before never coming back??
jessica i’d love a “depictions of villains with disabilities” video!!
It's called PINK WASHING when writers/screenwriter say afterwards that a person for suuuure totally clearly no doubt they swear was gay
Cough*Rowling*Cough
Can we also just talk about bi-erasure in cinema and pop-culture? Characters are often either straight or gay and unfortunately most movies featuring bisexual characters, particularly women, it's usually portrayed through a fetishizing male gaze where her sexuality isn't really valid but more just a personality trait to show that she is "wild". If anyone has good recommendations for bisexual characters and movies, please tell me!
Sadly the only bi character I can think of with any depth is Alice from the L Word and she's still treated like a slut who can't make up her mind. This is so true.
Dean Winchester.. **cough cough**
Nobody is called gay bi etc in it but lgbtq+ characters are in she ra and they do display it there is also a non binary character
Go watch Brooklyn99, the show is amazing.
There is a gay main character who is hillarious and it's portrayed very well. His relationship with his husband is adorable and they have a dog. A DOG
Angela from Bones is canonically attracted to both men and women and has relationships with both (though for all the male partners she had, she only had one female partner, though there is an implication of another). Naturally she falls into the category of "characters who are clearly bisexual but don't like labels," and it's a really complex issue so I can't say for sure whether or not it's positive representation. She's depicted as being in touch and unashamedly open about her sexuality, but also so are pretty much all the other straight characters, including the female lead. She's also often shown to be afraid of commitment, and when she does settle down and get married, it's with a man. Overall, she's intelligent, independent, confident, and compassionate. Aside from Angela, Bones has a number of side characters who are confirmed to be gay. It's definitely not perfect, but it is something.
Jessica: making up for some of the lack of awesome gay people on screen in vintage times by dressing like vintage times and being awesome on screen :)
That's very sexy of her
The code also functionally ended the career of Mae West, who was a free and powerful woman for the time.

The re-write that always made me laugh was in the movie Troy, where Achilles and Patroclus were written as "cousins." At least Garrett Hedlund and Brad Pitt were cool enough to give us that romantic forehead-press they shared in that one scene - but, seriously, Achilles' hyper-violent reaction would have made more sense, if it were over the death of his lover.
They were cousins - not first ones to be sure but they were related…and in love too
I love "Killing Eve"!!! The chemistry between Villanelle and Eve is incredible. Although I'm not directly into a relationship with an "Assassin", I'm always jealous of that fire going on between them. And Jodie Comer is so attractive 😭

"He's gay, this is clearly a story about him being gay, stop with the magic powers!" Okay, but I can't be the only one who immediately thought of Merlin, right?
Omg Merlin was so queer coded. Like, there's a reason why little (thought I was straight) me shipped him and Arthur so hard.
I really loved the part about "coming out"!!! I am a straight, heterosexual male, who has recently embraced things that UNEDUCATED people see as feminine, and make very rude accusations about my sexuality. The thing is, nail painting, skirts, heels, and other things that are now "exclusively feminine" ORIGINATED EXCLUSIVELY FOR MEN!!! Sorry, end of rant...............for now (maybe) 😁
Actually, you’re right about most of these things, but skirts were actually worn by everyone. Bifurcated garments only came into existence near the Middle Ages, so everyone wore robes/skirts before because it wasted less fabric.
@@jimbo9188 And clothing-wise, the whole subject of what is 'men's' vs 'women's' really depends on what region of the world or era in history you are talking about. In the non-western world, there's a lot less differentiation in clothing. Some of that is due to the climate - in hotter countries, everyone wears looser, longer clothing, men and women wear sandals and clogs more often, and both men and women might wear very ornate clothing. Everything seems to be bifurcated in western cultures - even the way that buttons open on a jacket, left or right, or what colors are men's colors or girls' colors. It's almost expected that there is, will be, or should be bifurcation. But that's not the case around the world.

I once got into a huge argument with my dad over the Hays Code. He was whinging about contemporary movies being so "liberal" and I pulled an "actually" by telling him that movies before the code were pretty much the same as they are now. He started literally yelling at me basically insisting that older films only showed sweet virginal nonsense. I had to find multiple websites showing him the Hays Code and what content was in films before it went into effect. He finally said, "Oh, well I guess they don't show those kinds of movies on Turner Classic." Ya think?!
The thing about superheroes being a bad metaphor for being queer also resonates with the experiences of autistic people.
The character who is 'different' who has something 'wrong' with them, until they learn to control their powers... maybe the thing that's 'wrong' with them is that they're gay or maybe autistic (or both).
It's all just making out that the only way to be accepted if you're different (or not straight, cis, neurotypical, etc) is to be a superhero, you're not allowed to be just a normal character, you have to be that much extra to be accepted.
So true!
Absolutely! Deviation from the norm will be punished unless the deviant is both extraordinary and of use to the society - in real life this usefulness is generally capitalist, in stories it’s often saving the world from imminent destruction. Think Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.
@ the new Harley Quinn movie that tried so damn hard to be woke but ended up actually just presenting minorities as vague stereotypes (feminist they gave no personality, that one Asian batwoman they ruined, that one villain who was supposedly gay.)
Yes! And then when you're both autistic AND queer, it's like whelp :p
@@lynn858 This makes me think of Sherlock Holmes. Clearly autistic-coded, but everyone hates him for being so goddamn weird, they just put up with it because he's useful.
Xena _isn't_ canonically gay?? She's literally kissed Gabrielle on screen and they're still acting like these two are just really close friends? And to think I was about to praise this show for being progressive. Pfft, the struggle is neverending.
Gotta wonder if the "not canonically gay" comes from the original writer or the PR team though.
I know nothing about it beyond what watching some Xena episodes would tell you so I'm just pondering out loud... in text... You know what I mean...
Xena never actually shows interest in men (unless she's manipulating them) I'm sure Xena and Gabrielle are really great Gal Pals who love kissing to ~practice~ for men! Just the best of friends! XD
The show never actually said, yes, she's gay. The whole gaynes of the show is almost entirely in the subtext. It was almost like a game they played.
Andy White ...and teen me was HELLA here for it. Xena & Gabrielle = My OTP 😍😍😍
It was progressive, for the time. They weren't allowed to get the leads together definitively (censorship funtimes, sigh) so they basically said it in just about every way they could without actually saying it. Utterly overt subtext. It's honestly barely even 'sub' by the end of it. Even if they never explicitly stated that they were a couple, there was so much between them that X&G are still the greatest wlw story I've ever watched.
I will never ever ever forgive anyone who was involved in the decision to avoid Poe Dameron and Finn being in a mlm relationship in Star Wars. I have a lot of issues with the new trilogy, and the missed opportunity of a wholesome relationship between the two characters that actually had chemistry is the biggest one.
OMG YES
I shipped them so hard.
This! They did it so they could sell the film in China which like... big market but should we really pander to their government which is... weeeeell... ya know. Not great.
Lesbian Amazon Sister only if it makes sense in the story though. Trying to force something for the sole purpose of representation, I think can do more harm than good.
YES!!! I was rooting for Poe and Finn so hard! And then by the 9th episode I was like just make them a V triad already with Finn as the hinge between Rey and Poe.
Dang, girl you were on fire in this one, zinger after zinger while delivering education to the masses!

X-Men used "mutants" as code for being gay a LOT (as my brother just told me) !! Very appreciated as a gay mutants 😅
Yes! I was also thinking about this! There are many scenes in the movies especially that are extremely explicit about this- one has a parent saying something like, “we’ll have you ever tried NOT being a mutant?” I’m also 100% convinced Charles and Erik are definitely a couple.

I love how my dad insists that he doesn't hate gay or lgbtq+ people because he's okay with their existence but still doesn't like gay marriage or rights. He is going to be SO surprised when my sister comes out as Bisexual and I come out as Pansexual and tell him about my girlfriend. I don't know if it's just me but while in the closet/pantry do you ever just have a weird urge to come out really casually and then walk away? Like, sometimes I just want to blurt out "I'm pan!" and leave XD it's the weirdest feeling.
I was very lucky in that my coming out to my parents was very casual.
"I want to tell you something"
Ok love
"I'm bisexual"
ah cool....wanna go pop the kettle on?

Best coming out ever haha
I did a similar thing. My dad and step mom were over for lunch at my house and we were talking about their surprise at me marrying my husband. My dad said he was quite certain that I would eventually bring home a girlfriend. I told him I would have if I weren't so shy around my crushes. They were so certain I was a lesbian and so surprised by my supposedly being straight they were completely baffled by my coming out as bi and left in a daze. (Later I realized pan is a better fit for me, but I still refer to myself as bi to avoid the effort of explaining and answering a bunch of questions, but that's a whole other story.)
That's how I came out with my sexuality never made a big deal about it because it was never a big deal to me just realized I was attracted to more than just men just vibed with that
I did that. Protip: don't. It did not go well. There was screaming and crying afterwards.
@@alexisflory6496 Oh, I'm sorry that happened to you! I'm more nervous now for when I eventually have to tell my family :P
I always questioned the “spinster sisters” that lived together in old movies. It was a great way for them to live together in peace!
I like how in 1946 Alfred Hitchcock tricked The Code in Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergmann, making them kiss for 2,5 minutes while being stopped every 3 seconds by a phone or something else, so it would pass. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I don't like the idea of assuming a tomboy is a lesbian, because it implies that tomboys are all lesbians, and all lesbians have to be masculine or to some degree, butch. Well-meaning representation always seems to default to stereotypes, which doesn't seem like a positive to me.
It creates a very narrow picture of what a gay man is, or what a lesbian is, when in reality, they are diverse in looks, beliefs and political views.
I don't like characters being gay, for the sake of having a gay character, but at the same time, making a big deal out of a character being gay, isn't helping normalise gayness.
I grew up watching Russell T. Davies' Doctor Who. Capt. Jack Harkness is masculine, heroic, a tad flamboyant and very flirtatious. He kisses the Doctor and it did not appear... Forced or weird. I don't remember questioning it. He even flirts with other species, and he doesn't feel like this creepy character. He is one of the best fictional characters to me. They acknowledge that Jack isn't straigh, but it never feels like a big deal. It is just accepted.
Retroactively claiming a character was gay all along is stupid and adds nothing to the story. Unless their sexuality played a role in the plot, it doesn't matter. It feels like a cheap act to garner positive attention.
Well said! And Jack is an awesome character :)
The thing about film from what I’m learning from my queer film studies class is that stereotypes help showcase LGBTQIA+ characters without explicitly saying they are such because of regulations from studios saying they can’t produce LGBTQIA+ content. It is unfortunate this had been the norm for many years. (See: Will Hays’ Production Code) They were meant to be exploited and demonized for decades so, directors and producers would circumvent that by not directly expressing that they were anything other than straight or just non-sexualized to pass under their studio’s radar. They had to keep silent about their sexuality and that stigma against LGBTQIA+ characters has held up until more recently with openly LGBTQIA+ people demanding and producing content that reflects their lives. I am happy more are coming out explicitly stating characters are part of the community because we’ve had to hide out in the open for so long that it was also expressed in movies and media. Now, we can be our true selves wherever with less demonizing and hatred from the general public. (Aside, of course, from countries where being gay is illegal)
Izzy Hale I don't necessarily mean characters that are directly presented as being gay, but characters who aren't shown to be definitively straight, and don't adhere to gender norms, and for that reason, the audience deems them as being definitely gay.
I understand the desire to see someone on TV who is like you, but I hope people recognise that a character being gay, doesn't make them anymore or less important (assuming the plot is not centred around sexuality). Sexuality is such a small part of who you are, and you wouldn't let others define you by it, so why would you choose to define yourself by it.
That said, being of a minority sexuality can also have a major impact on you as a person, particularly if you grew up ashamed of it and shamed for it. I can understand why it is such a big deal to many people. People are still killed for being gay, and raped for being lesbians.
Hollywood has a lot of power to present gays and lesbians as ordinary people, who aren't out here to harm your children, but instead, they opt for lazy tokenism, which turns a lot of people off. They take a canonically straight, white male, and turn them into a black lesbian, as if that makes it a different story.
Write/green-light new stories that were always about black lesbians, or bisexual Asians. They have the money for it, and people would be more receptive to it.
Alexa George Yeah, China makes up a large portion of Hollywood's audience, and they aren't too keen on gay characters. The game company, Blizzard, in America they claim that one of their game characters is a lesbian, but in China, nope, she is straight.
This bothers me that these multi-million/billion dollar companies, who claim to be allies and supporters of the LGBT, will cater to countries and regions that discriminate LGBT people, because their profits are more important than human lives.
Bethesda as well, they changed their icon to a rainbow version for Pride Month, but not in the countries where homosexuality is illegal. The support is so fake, and I hate it. I don't know why a large chunk of their audience supports this Rainbow logo every year, because support for LGBT people shouldn't be designated to a single month.
A cheap act to garner positive attention?

Lesbian Amazon Sister well no, studies have proven transgender people’s brain structure to be more alike their preferred gender identity and i will happily link you to some articles or w/e
Lesbian Amazon Sister you are, scientifically, wrong. Neurologically, trans people are more similar to the gender with which they identify, than with their assigned gender at birth. In addition, on an anecdotal level, I’ve known two men who transitioned to being women, and both always felt female before their transition. The way they thought, the way they felt things, etc. Insisting that trans women are not women, makes you a TERF, and that’s an ugly look, sister.
@@jadesage2461 do you have any links to that study I am genuinely curious I had no idea brain structure was even different between males and females. If gender identity can be linked to brain structure I wonder if sexuality is as well and if so is it a genetic mutation and if so how far back in human genetics does it go I mean there are animals that prefer thier own gender so not sure that could be classified as a mutation since it obviously has not died out as being a negative mutation (in the sense that it lessons the likely hood of reproducing) but if sexuality is defined by brain structure differences it must be a integral part of all creatures genetic makeup so where did it come from. For that matter I wonder if these studies have looked into chickens brains as there are hens that crow and exhibit rooster behavior I wonder if it is caused by a difference in brain structure or is simply chimerism in them. Curse you for arousing my curiosity I am going to be googling stuff all night.

She may not have died, but her girlfriend did. Still fulfilled the trope. Also the “substitute magic for lesbianism” trope (though I actually thought it was done well).
And Willow and Tara had the first onscreen lesbian kiss on a major network show. And I loved that Joss refused to make a big deal out of it. It wasn’t in the trailer, he refused to let the network sensationalise it in any way- it was a quick grounding sort of kiss in the middle of a terrible situation- and so low key that you might have missed that it was “the first” and supposed to be this big thing.
Neartmhor And don’t forget that after Tara died, Willow became evil (if only temporarily). One of many reasons that I prefer to think that ‘Buffy’ ended after Season 5. Except for ‘Once More With Feeling’.
@Miro Kai that whole thing about willow looking for magic in what looked like a cr*ck house is what screamed addiction to me.
Re: Bend It Like Beckham.
Oooh, yeah!
100%! And Whip It is the gayest non-gay film I've ever seen
@monny287 I didn't know that, I thought it was based on a book. Did you read that in an interview or something? I'd love to know more
And Fried Green Tomatoes.
I now refer your content to other, I am citing you in talks, and showing this video during classes. You are such an amazing person and resource for our community. Just wanted you to know you are a personal hero of mine.
disability and villains is such a huge topic, I would love to see a collaboration video(s) with other youtubers about that!
I love Deadpool (Pansexual), Captain Cold, Sara Lance, Nora-West Allen (Xcess), John Constantine, William, Clayton, Charlie, Alex Danvers and Nia Nal. I forget to mention Doctor Who's Captain Harkness and Bill Potts.
I feel like TV is a LOT more inclusive than cinema. There still some networks that have a ways to go but CW and DC have been doing an excellent job. If you're into comics your should read DC Bombshell's. So. Much. Representation.
Deadpool is my favorite pansexual superhero
That means you also love the Abridged version of Alucard, from Hellsing.
Deadpool is yes.
If the writers could just get over it and give is supercorp already, I'd forgive the abysmal direction.
And Doctor Who Clara Oswald, she's bi! ✨ And River Song is queer too, she mentioned having a wife 🌸
The shade on you-know-who. I am laughing my head off.
Captain America and Bucky...need I say more-
Also, Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omems, like holy shit that show was so gay-
Good news for you: Aziraphale and Crowley are canon!
@@FabianWatches Yes, they are. And then what drama happened around it because Neilman didn't want to call two nonbinary persons explicitly gay and so much people were calling him homophobic, transphobic and everything- *sigh*
@@DarkCreepyFairy
Yeah, although it was a small part of the fandom it's still sad to see so much ignorance.
Good Omens actually helped me a lot as a genderfluid person but even if it didn't I would've needed to accept that not everything is about m y interpretation of it. The highest authority belongs to the authors.
And to be honest, even without any labels or traditional romance I will forever see Aziraphale and Crowley as one of the healthiest and most heartwarming friend and relationships in fiction.
@@FabianWatches This is beautiful way of thinking about Aziraphale and Crowley.
I really don't understand why every one directly assumes that characters are gay only bc of the way they speak or look like is elegant or "female" as most would say. I know enough people being like that even with make up n skirts and their still cis and straight💁🏻♀️as long as they don't do something referring to their gender or Sexuality I'd that's no representation of being LGBTQ+
Oh my god you just explained why I have always loved the villains.
I'm learning more from Jessica's videos than I ever do in school.
Lol same
#truth
That's why I watch - to be a better teacher!
I'm actually incapable of hearing the words 'hays code' without rolling my eyes.
Gays code? 😁
Disney probably didn't queer code *all* their villains *completely* on purpose...but once you know Ursula was modeled on a real live drag queen it's hard not to assume that the rest of it was also intentional.
I actually like her coz she's so womanly it gives me hope when juxtaposed against Arielle who I could never be like. As a child it made me feel like my brand of girliness was okay and normal. Arielle and all other Disney princesses were just so graceful dainty Ind adorable!
I could listen to you talking about history for 5 hours straight, love these kind of videos!
30 seconds into the video and I just had to pause and comment. That avocado dress is fabulous! Especially with the hat. Jessica always looks amazing, but today’s look is particularly stunning.
Just what I needed today is a new Jessica vid! Love you!
I zoned out for a second and heard "B-Movies" and was like THE BEE MOVIE
Such a masterpiece
I stumbled upon your channel during a RUclips rabbit hole and I’m so glad I did! Thank you for breaking down tropes and signaling in a digestible way for the masses. Also, your wardrobe is extraordinary & I’m LIVING for that avocado 🥑 print!
1:51 basically whole Sherlock series 🙃
Yesssssss
“Sherlock is in love! But with who?”
Thank you! Each episode was like, "Let's spin the wheel and see what sexual orientation we land on this episode." And that wheel had to be spun for each character! I swear they directed it that way to intentionally make viewers examine their own sexuality!
Perfect example? The hysterically funny and delightfully flamboyant Mr. Humphries, from "Are You Being Served?" Love him so much ❤
OMG YES! I love him and thia show so much!
And of course Mrs. Slocombe always talking about her....ahem...."pussy" cat. LOL
This is one of my favorite videos you’ve made. Amazing research and perfectly done! Informative and educational. I’m glad you’re feeling better!
This video was such a joy to watch because your love of classic film just shines through the screen. Thanks for sharing your love and knowledge!
I’d love a video on the history of disability portrayals in film!
You are the most hilarious teacher I've ever had! Got to lwatch again some of the my favourite films from the sixties with a different perspective.
I would like to say progress has been made in television and film. But has it? Perhaps, in small steps. However, that particular industry has been in existence for over a century. Societal acceptance has progressed at a greater pace during the same time frame. We must get to the point where audiences no longer are shocked or have that "isn't that nice" reaction to LGBTQ+ characters. And said characters need to be presented and portrayed far more authentically than in the past. This simply can no longer be an outlier, or arthouse, or independent ... it must become the norm.
Thank you for sharing your perspective, your knowledge, your thoughts on this important subject. Always enjoy and appreciate your work and being educated. Hope you continue to recover safely. Take care, Jessica! 👍🤟💝
Richard Velez have you seen She-Ra?
@@shift9894 I have only seen the 80s version, when I was a kid
Easier said than done. I don't know if you are into video games but the Last of us 2 came out the other day and so many people are giving it negative reviews because it features a lesbian couple kiss and and a trans woman.
The gaming industry as a whole has a long way to go because people throw hissy fits and complain that games are "too political" when they feature LGBTQ+ individuals.
What's amusing though is how they don't understand genre at all because people are mad that CD Project Red the developers of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 changed their profile picture on Twitter to a rainbow Version and have been threatening to cancel their pre-orders unless they change it back.
It's behavior like this that solidifies by belief that the gaming industry will collapse by the end of the century.
Honestly hate these people.
I love how deep you go into these subjects! Thank you for all your hard work.
Me: "Wow, I never really read any of these characters as gay."
Also me, realising I'm a useless Ace: "oh"
2:24 let's be honest? More like "lesbi-honest". Okay but this is so informative, my ears and EYES have been blessed by this beauty.
My homophobic parents love Xena and Star Trek, which I find hilarious because Xena/Gabrielle and Kirk/Spock are right there and SO OBVIOUS
I honestly don't get how conservatives can watch shows like Star Trek because they are so progressive.
Like it's not like they are hiding it, so either you are intentionally ignoring it (which is doubtful because conservatives love complaining about things they deem against conservative values) or they are just dense because damn is it impossible to miss.
Kirk is like the ultimate pop culture bisexual man, and it cracks me up when people want to deny that he and Spock are such an obvious pairing
@@eveescastle5866 The crazy thing is, my parents love all kinds of shows that are so obviously progressive. They'll complain if there's an openly gay character on screen, but other than that, they really do not notice. They'll watch shows that have such scathing critiques of capitalism and the like, and they wont even notice! It's crazy
@@d.d.d.a.a.a.n.n.n They've never even considered the possibility, which is wild to me. They love Star Trek so much, but they've literally never thought about it. And one time when I mentioned that "some people" ship Kirk/Spock they got so upset and said no one should make things sexual. Um??? That show is so sexual, I dont know what they're talking about.
@@d.d.d.a.a.a.n.n.n They aren't.
You are simply DELIGHTFUL to watch and listen to, thank you for your marvelous channel I absolutely love it.
here after a disappointing history class on ancient greece... wish i had lovely lgbtq+ teachers like her, this channel has taught me so much 💖
this is a very lovely and fancy educational series
I introduced my 15 year old daughter to 'Fried Green Tomatoes' and had to tell her before that it was different than the book, and at the time showing the lesbian relationship the way it was shown was "groundbreaking". She's still pissed, and now points out how cinema can't show LGBTQ people realistically.
That's my mom's favorite movie. Part of me wants to tell her about the lesbian subtext because she seems oblivious to it.
I figured the drunken kiss pretty much sealed that deal.
@@annaphallactic Do it. Do it. Do it. 😃
It's so sad because their relationship in the book is so beautiful and the way their town and whole family excepted them.
I'm binge watching your entire channel at this point 🥺💞
As always, thanks for the great content. I hope you're feeling better. Xoxo
„he‘s gay!! just say he‘s gay!! this is a movie about him being GAY!!!“
me watching disney’s luca
Same
18:17 this why the Charmed reboot is awesome we have a witch who’s not just a witch she’s a lesbian who has an adorable on screen relationship with a long term partner
I've been meaning to watch it, but now that you mention this I am most definitely going to watch it.
Now I understand why fans of the original are mad about it. I just figured they were upset because it wasn't the original, so good to know I can completely ignore them.
@@eveescastle5866 I can see some legit criticism when compared to the original, but if you watch it for itself... you'll probably enjoy it.
Loved this!! Completely informative and entertaining. Absolutely LOVED it when you said 'it's a gem!'. Thank you for making us think. Xxx
I'm SO GLAD you did this video. Amazing content, as always. And that avocado dress!
I say this as a cis-gender straight person. Can a villain be gay. Sure, but I agree with Jessica. If the villain is the only gay person the entire story, that is defiantly a problem.
Great video! Thanks. I’m in my late 30s so Xena and Gabrielle were everything when I was a teenager! I’m watching a lot of current teen fictional content at the moment and there’s such a contrast in representation from what was a available to me, which is awesome. There’s still work to do, though!
This is so interesting! I had not heard of this and I am so grateful for your videos. Thank you for being both educational and fabulous!
I discovered this video about 3 weeks ago, and watching your work since then has been fascinating, educational, and delightful. It helps me understand my disabled wife's troubles and inspired me to subscribe to a YT channel for the first time after years of haphazard foraging. You are amazing in so many ways and I look forward to your future work. Excelsior!
"She's just gay because she's gay and no one can take that crush aways from me." 😂
I expressed my feelings on how Nicklodeon wouldn't let Korrasami be explicitly canon onscreen on reddit, and someone called me entitled and started ranting. I can only say I was bewildered. I only came by to say I wish my ship was more shippable. ^^"
absolutley loved this video so much!!!! i actually decided whilst watching this that I'm going to do this topic for my EPQ!!! Im so excited, love you so much and your videos are amazing xxxx
This is definitely high up in my list of favorite videos from you!
Would love to see you do something like this about the disabled villain trope.
I didn't even realise this a new video until I got the notification after I started watching! Great video as always, happy Pride month from this B in LGBT
I totally love your delivery of the word "macho" in this lol. Learned some new things too!
Loving Jessica's sass in this video! Great series Jessica!
Excellent run down. For y'all youngins who would like some expanded history, at least up until the mid 1990's *feels old* you need to watch the Celluloid Closet. It's THE visual documentary authority that covers everything Ms. Jessica discussed, but in greater detail, at least up until 1995, but the 90's were just 10 years ago, right?
Yes! The Celluloid Closet is wonderful and definitely addresses many of these things (but with older content, yes).
@@PhoenixDove Luckily the beginning of cinema, and the Hayes Act, etc, won't change. But certainly the sequel to the Celluloid Closet would have a lot of ground to cover. But still relevant for early and mid 20th century history, it's a great "how we got here" primer, hopefully some of "the kids" will look up. If just one wee babe watches it I'll feel I've done my job. :)
Can you please talk about the show Sense8? The characters are incredibly diverse and multifaceted, but do they still fall victim to Hollywood tropes?
Do they???? I didn't really think so?? Nomi andAmanita were a beautiful power couple Who lifted each other up and Lito and Hernando didn't seem to conform to Hollywood's gay stereotypes. The only thing I didn't like about the relationship was that Danni kept masturbating whenever they kissed which just felt very fujoshi esque.
Tea in the morning I agree completely with what you said. I just want to know what Jessica might think.
Rachel Meierovich ohhhhh 😂
Considering the show was written and directed by the same women who wrote and directed the matrix, I am inclined to say no.
But then again humans are fallible in nature so mistakes do happen.
Great show btw and we all know why it was actually canceled despite whatever Netflix says.
I feel like it might have played into promiscuity tropes, seeing that people were hoeing around all over the place and having multiple orgies. I definitely enjoyed the diversity and the trans character was one of my favorites, but it was almost a little too much at times (and kinda felt like they just wanted an excuse to repeatedly make softcore porn)
SUCH a killer video! So thorough, and so articulately presented. Thank you, and well done!
Such wonderful words said in such a beautiful voice!! :’)💞
